MGS on GC - How Would it Handle?
« on: March 09, 2003, 01:40:17 PM »
What do you guys think about this? I for one am very excited. Here's the big question: will it be a port of Substance or will it be MGS3? Also, what do you think the controls will be like? Could it be better than the PS2 version?

Should I buy Substance on the PS2 now, or should I wait until more info on MGS GC is revealed? This is totally dependant on what version will be better, so tell me what you think!

So far, nothing is known about whether it is a port, remake or a completely new game.
The game is scheduled to come out Q4 2003 so you should probably wait a while to see whats cooking at E3.
Only thing we know is that Nintendo and Konami are working on MGS or something, so that should be promising.

I seriously SERIOUSLY doubt that it will be MGS3. I've heard that Xbox MIGHT be the first platformer for MGS3 BUT odds are that it will be PS2. So PS2 & Xbox before GC for MGS3. The GC will probably be MGS2 Substance.

Well, it has been said for some time that MGS was being ported Resident Evil style,  It wouldn't suprise me if that is what you are talking about.

I personally think that you're all being FAR too optimistic.  Konami's support of the GameCube has been atrocious so far.  I think we're much more likely to see a port of Metal Gear Solid (the PLAYSTATION version), than we are to see Sons of Liberty or Substance.  I'm hoping that this won't be the case, but only time will tell.

I think GameCube will either get Metal Gear Gaiden, or Metal Gear Solid Remake (Integral 2?).

I am just praying that we won't be getting MGS2 Substance.  Words cannot describe the contempt I have for that game.

It will more than likely be the first one redone. Some rumors say it will be rebuilt like RE, but I doubt it. It would be content if it had a noticible graphic update since its the best of the two solid games. (And my sister lent out my Playstation version and it never returned.)

Konami didn't take advantage of Xbox's power why would they take advantage of GC.  I would like a MG game that is built from the ground up on GC.  It would be nice if the game also took advantage of the controller.  Using the analog in the triggers to perform such presure sensitive tasks as strangling an enemy.  The most important thing would be the best AI in any game to date.

OK... (Restraining self, out of respect) . MGS on the Gamecube will be the best game of all time, period. I will definitely be fully exclusive. It will 100% justify my purchase for Gamecube.
Note: A remake of the PSone version would beyond doubt make me faint from “obsessive optimism abuse disorder”. Hehe…

But seriously dudes, the more optimistic the press and the fans are, the more aware Nintendo will be. Then they’ll be no excuses for them. I have finished MGS Integral, MGS Gameboy, Sons of Liberty PS2, and played with substance on Xbox for a reasonable time. What I am trying to say is, MGS on the Cube will be an absolute stunner irrespective of whether or not it’s MGS 3, Remake, or Gaiden. The Nintendo flair could do soooooooooo much more for this franchise. I mean, think about it, why would Konami out-of-the-blue give Gamecube their BIGGEST game? They could easily “test the waters” with something less “flashy”. I know that those who played the MGS series and genuinely loved them know how I feel. However they can’t be bothered to express their opinions because, um… they just can't contemplate... the possibilities…
On a side note, a moment that I’ll forever cherish in my gaming lifetime, is when I saw David Hayter and Pat Zimmerman (I am not sure about the spelling) in the end credits of everyone’s favorite Denis Dyack game: Eternal Darkness!!! That was pure magic

MGS goes to the Gamecube...fine.  I'll probably rent it and see if it's any good.  I've never played any of the MG games though to try one out on the Gamecube would be cool.

I think that the fact that it's coming to Gamecube is good enough, but, as many of us would say, there ARE limits as to if we would buy it or not:
- If it's a STRAIGHT port of MGS, like Capcom are doing/have done with RE2/3: Nemesis/Code Veronica, that would suck big time. Konami would say "look, we did for you guys, and this is how you repay us, by not buying our game?" and would give an excuse for not developing GC games. After all, if their biggest franchise didn't sell, what hope would their other one have?
- If it's a straight port of MGS2 or Substance, then well, that's OK. At least we're up to date. But I can't see why they wouldn't want to improve the graphics of the game, since I thought, as with most PS2 games, the graphics are pretty blurry. But then, Konami have been lazy so far, so anything can happen.
- Remakes of these three would be excellent. Or, if they made only MGS2/Substance, then why not include MGS for the keen gamers? I would get it for sure.
- MGS3 would be even better. The thing is though, I think they should bring it to Gamecube first. Not only will we get it, but it will tempt those who need it to buy the game for Gamecube, or buy a Gamecube just to get it. The sales might be poor, but at least then, Konami will have the PS2 and Xbox to fall back on.

There is one thing for sure, though, and that is that Nintendo have to push this HARD. GLOAT that we've got an MGS game!

And what is MGS Integral and Gaiden? I'm only aware of MGS1/2/Substance.

"I think we're much more likely to see a port of Metal Gear Solid (the PLAYSTATION version), than we are to see Sons of Liberty or Substance."

You mean a completely unaltered port of the Playstation version like Resident Evil 2 or 3?  Boy would that suck.  I can get that game for like $20 Canadian.

I think the MGS game for Cube is going to be a port or remaker of some kind.  There's just no way in hell that Konami would go from being so anti-Gamecube to suddenly giving us their top franchise (unless they know of something big that Nintendo's cooking up that will change the console wars in the Cube's favour).  If it is a barebones port of an existing release it doesn't really make sense for the release date to be Q4 2003.  If it's an unaltered port then wouldn't they be able to get the game out much sooner?  Why would it take the rest of the year to finish?  Therefore I figure that while it may be a port it won't be completely unchanged.  They have to be adding something to it or they're just really slow with the port job.

I totally agree with everyone that this game will be the deciding factor for Konami on whether or not to support the Gamecube.  This kind of puts us Cube owners in a bad position.  If Konami makes a crappy port and it doesn't sell for obvious reasons then we're not going to get any support.  However if they give us a crappy port and we DO buy it just to get some Konami support they're going to think that we're willing to buy crap and likely won't give us anything really good (likely just more crappy ports).  The only situation that truly benefits us is if Konami actually gives us a game worth buying.  So it's basically entirely up to them if Konami Gamecube support is going to be any good.  That's not a particularly hopeful situation considering Konami already thinks the Cube is a waste of time and therefore "self-fulfilling prophesy" syndrome may be in full effect.

I don't think anyone its gonna buy this game just to get Konami support. Maybe a few people but not the enough. Anyway i think it's gonna be a good game because Miyamoto said he was working with them, so i guess the it's gonna be a different game that you won't see in other system, i don't now if it's gonna be totally different or just partially but it's gonna be different. Hopefulley this game gonna sell well and the GameCube is gonna have a Castlevania which is the Konamis game i really cares. We'll see.

Yeah but wouldn't it cost Konami money / time  to make an updated Metal Gear Solid rather than just port over the PS2 game like they did for the Xbox. I mean if the Xbox gets a PS2 direct port of MGS2 and MGS2 can play on the PS2 thus the GC can handle it..... wouldn't it be smarter to just copy off ( lazy ) another PS2 port? Unless of course you think Konami will port off a direct PS1 game to the GC.... which would suck.

MGS: Integral was a special version of MGS that was released in Japan for the PSX, and on the PC in North America.  It included the VR missions with the full game at no extra cost.  It was a very good PC port though, and I am very happy to have it.  The only gripe I have with it is the lack of motion blur in the cinematics.

I used the word Gaiden, as I couldn't think of a proper english substitute for the word.  It's a Japanese word that's loosely translated to mean sidequest.  Not part of the main series.  No such game exists (unless you count the atrocious Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge), but it would be likely for GameCube if they did decide to make one, as MGS3 has already been promised to PS2 and Xbox.

Obviously Konami has looked at the sales of the RE series on the Cube and atleast now believe bloody games can sale on the system in both Japan and North America(don't know about the UK).  The sales of REmake were pretty good and also RE0, but the straight ports(and that god foresaken price tag)of RE2-3 results in poor sales.  If Konami were to bring MG over to the Cube if would have to be of some quaility especially if they are developing it with Nintendo.  Personally, I'm hoping for a total remake of the original NES Metal Gear but in reality, even with Nintendo co-developing the project, the least we'll get is a port of Substance.  Inwhich case I'll only buy it if Nintendo packs an e-reader card with the original NES Metal Gear game on it, this too though is unlikely.

I expect it to be a port of Substance...I think Konami knows as well as anyone else that an unenhanced PSone game is not going to sell that well on the GameCube, and they've already done it on the Xbox, as well as making two versions for the PS2.  Porting it to the Cube is the obvious solution.  Hopefully Konami will work to ensure that this version is at least as good as the PS2 version, I heard that the Xbox port had a few problems.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I am not sure if something has been in the works for over 2 years, but I do remember Hideo Kojima saying that he was very interested in developing something for the Gamecube quite a while ago.  I will try to find the article and provide a link.  Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

anyone who is versed in the ways of gaming would know what you're talking about. For those who aren't, kill yourselves. Haha.
I also have an article from IGNCube (Matt Cassamassia's editorial on August 21 2000) saying how much Hideo Kojima thought the PS2 was hard to develop for. Here is a direct quote:

'Even Hideo Kojima, the demi-god behind PS2's flagship title MGS2, has optimistically expressed issues with the hardware: "When PS2 was first announced, Sony said you could get Hollywood movie graphics quality, and that is true. But if we tried to create MGS2 trying to maintain that quality of graphics throughout the game...we cannot do it. If you take a game like Tekken Tag (a fighting game from Namco) where you only have two models and rendered backgrounds, you can probably do it. But with MGS and it's 3D evironment, you just cannot do it." '

and:

'MSNBC: Did you have any idea you were going to get such great graphics out of the PS2?

Kojima: "I was actually expecting something much better, and we were not getting what we expected. In the early days, I dreaded going to work because I knew we were not going to get what we expected." '

If they had so many problems with the PS2 version, surely making games on Gamecube, especially MGS2/3, cant be THAT hard would it? Geez.

Oh, and I actually printed that editorial out. When the Gamecube was announced, I printed out everything there was about it. Articles, Pictures, I even have the original speech from the then newly formed IGNCube of Howard Lincoln's announcement of the 'Dolphin'!
