Me and my friend have had an idea. a new system being co-released with the hopeful, very hopeful gamecube 2. It will be a portable system using a new small type of dvd's. It is made by philips, ( maybe a conincidence to the philips gc disks heh) and its called blue wave technology. The size of the drive is like follows

...........................................
                                         |
                                         |
                                         |
                                         |
                                         |
                                         |
..........................................|

Now think of the size of the gba cartdige, go ahead, hold it up to the screeen, those are real mesauremtns. That is the size of the drive, which hold the cd inside. The cd can hold approx 1gb of space at present time!!. Now think in 3 years the power of pocket pcs. The code and structure put into the shear power of pocket pcs can make a handheld capaable of at least ps2 graphics or more, IN A HANDHELD. Now like i said, this is not a rumour i heard, nor official. Just and idea me and my friend thought of. Just imagine a gba with a cd drive on top with sweet graphics.

The one thing I like about your idea is that it would use small DVDs. I think that'd be awesome if GBA used small DVDs.

Where would you save the game?  Would we need memory cards for our handhelds now?

What would be great is if the GBA was just a mini game cube in the same size handheld. You could take a game you were working on  at home  put the disk in and bring it on the road, to work, whatever. So  much potential.
Would increase  cube sales as well to all the people who owned just the  handheld and wanted to play the games on a TV. Specially if the cube 2 is backwards compatible.

moving parts in a handheld is a big no no.

also, don't expect PS2 power in a handheld. Cost is a major factor in handhelds. A PS2 power handheld would cost like $200 - $300.  Also, the battery life would be terrible.

this is actually a pretty interesting idea. I think 1 GB storage would be extremely useful for next-gen portable gaming.

Jollus, there wouldn't be a need for a memory card, at least not in the way you describe. Since this would be a portable device, you could take it with you anywhere. That eliminates the need for removable memory cards. So, the memory would really just be built into the system, much like a Palm. Now, as for memory expansion, that would be just one of the many cool accessories this thing could have.

StRaNgE, that would be a bad idea. You do not want to merge the portable gaming and console gaming industries. If the next Gamecube was directly compatible with the next Game Boy, 2-D gaming as we know it would disappear. That, in my opinion, would be a bad move.

Mingesium, it's not like this thing would be released anytime this year. And besides, Nokia's N-Gage is going to be causing so much ruckus, that I think Tokerev and his friend should wait until the N-Gage hype dies down before working on this idea of their's. So, price is not an issue, for this device would not be released for some time. In fact, it'd have to wait 'til the next Gamecube is out, which is probably going to be another 3 or 4 years.

The best solution for using discs for game data for a future gameboy/handheld would be to have the disc encased and within the cartiage it would also have a small memory chip. Thus sovling the MC problem. I believe moving parts should not be much of a problem, I mean we have it with MDs and CD walkmans.

well first off i dont see why we need to attack his idea, this is just for fun.  It is a very creative idea i think.  MY only thing is I dont want my portables to be mostly 3d.  I love the 2d adventures on my GBA, and i fear if we start using discs on the portable, the 2d may disappear more so than it is.  simple rpg 3d games are fine too, like the original 6 FF's.  But i would like to see this system in like 20 years, when tech has evolved enough to handle the problems anyone has whined about.  All in all i think it is a good idea.  Just not the time for it yet.

PS.  HA, no more excuse as to not make a 3d pokemon game..... GIMME GIMME GIMME!

I imagine the next handheld will be of about N64 type quality, possibly slightly less than that.  The Nintendo handhelds seem to be equivalent to the systems they make:

Gameboy (and color): NES
GBA: SNES
next: N64
etc.

That'd make sense to me.

There are ways to minimize moveing parts to make a small handheld. But don't expect 3D out of the system Nintendo opted not to have 3d in the Advanced because the screen is way too small, and making the screen any bigger risks making it too clumbersome to be a true portable gaming device.

As for a memory they could have a SD slot similar to Digital Camera were the card locks in and is hidden away so there is little chance of it getting accidentally ejected and have a smaller version come with the machine.

As for the screen they could possible use Kodak's new LCD technology if the price is right. (Rick has a thread on this board about it.)

As for Blu-Ray don't hold your breath that Technology is owned by Sony and I don't think they would lend or sell it (fairly) to one of its competitors.
Stupidity is lost on my. Then again I'm almost always lost.

A very interesting idea indeed!  Hold on to it, my friend, and work on it behind closed doors until the time is right (and the funding is there!).  I'm sure that in a couple of years many of the problems that were addressed on this post, from small moving parts to memory storage, will be resolved using much smaller silicon chips than what we use today.

Think of this: how much progress have we made in the development of new computer technology in the past five years?  With what we will have five years from now, the majority of those problems presented will no longer be.
