Ok I have to ask this,  I got Metroid Prime a few months ago after hearing how everyone loved it, and played it maybe 3 days in a row for about an hour each and just couldn't get into it and never played it again.  Tonight I picked it up and tried to give it another chance and I'm in the "Chozo Ruins" where you get back your morph ball and everything close to the beginning, anyways, after about another hour of playing I had to turn it off as I just can't get into it at all.  I don't know if it's just too much like a quake 3 game to me or the fact that its just too hard to move and see anything thats not directly infront of you or what, its just no fun what so ever for me and can't figure out how anyone could say this is a good game let alone a great one, so my question is what am I missing?  Does it get better?  I want to like it but it's just not happening, so what made it so great for everyone else here?

SpellBound, if you don't like the game by the time you pass through the Space Pirate Base, it isn't for you.

I gave it a chance until I reached there... it was an okay game in my eyes before then, but now it's my favorite game ever.

You Americans are so lucky, get everything so much more early.
Metroid is set to come out April 3rd. BUT, Zelda is coming in May..
Which one should i choose, game of the year or Zelda?
I choose Zelda hehe.
Man, Eternal Darkness should have won for writing instead of Splinter Cell!

I'm glad Metroid Prime finally got the recognition it deservs so much. I heard splinter cell is a great game and I can't wait to play it, when is the release date for GC? MP is a great game I love it and I'm at 78% of the game, I didn't played super metroid so much  as this one, in fact I didn't even finish it but I still remember some songs of it and when I hear them on my GC I get chills, plus the boss battles are really cool and really tough. The leves are huge and very detail, you may not like it because it's in First person view but I  this view fits it.

"there not rookies
10years+ Retro has been around"

Retro was created by Nintendo only a few years ago specifically to create Gamecube games.  Metroid Prime is there first game.  Therefore they are a rookie developer.  Though many of the people who work there have been in the industry for a while.

It's nice to see Metroid Prime win Game of the Year.  If I was in the industry I would much prefer to win awards chosen by fellow game developers then a bunch of journalists or "industry experts".

yeah, wait till you get to the space pirate ops in phendrana drifts. my god that was amazing. it is one of my favorite moments in gameing history. and the thermal visor kicks so much ass. you have to play it till you get to this part. if you really need to, buy a manual.  it truely is deserving of the coveted game of the year award.

SCF, I could not have put it any better.  After seeing Splinter Cell win some and then Battlefield 1942 (which are both very deserving, just not up to Metroid Prime in my opinion), I began to think if many of the voters had over-looked, not enjoyed the Metroid formula, been payed off by Microsoft, had drank too much the night before the votes.  Retro deserves this honor in every way imaginable.  Let's not forget the amazing task set before them: Nintendo EAD, maybe the most respected game developer/innovator in the known world, forms them because they recognized their potentional and then handed them, presumably, the NES, GameBoy, and SNES versions of Metroid and said "play 'em, know 'em."  Then a couple weeks later, EAD comes back and says "OK, you know the concept, you know the background, we want this game in 3D, you tell us the best way to pull this off."  If it would've been me there, I probably would've looked at them and ran.  Did Retro back away?  No, absolutely not.  They stepped up to the plate in their first major league at bat and pulled off a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to give the home team the World Series win.  Dang, I can't wait until they are veterans...

I’m glad Metroid Prime won GOTY at GDC. Because in my opinion, Metroid didn’t get what it deserved at the AIAS awards.

I thought Battlefield 1942 was the GOTY or is it MP who will get the cool GOTY decal on the new boxes?

Well, there are two different awards. Battlefield 1942 got game of the year from AIAS, while Metroid Prime got game of the year from GDC. So technically they both can have “Game of The Year” printed on their boxes.

I don’t know if you were referring to me, but I said that Metroid deserved more than what it got.

10years+ Retro has been around

I think you mean Retro has 10+ years of experience.  Metroid being their first release, they do count as a "rookie" studio.  Retro was newly formed for Project Dolphin, but they consist of former Acclaim/Iguana members and people from various other studios and newbies.

Metroid Prime is awesome.

Sly Cooper is very deserving of what it got.  That was a fun game.

Other Nintendo games should have gotten some of that stuff, like Super Mario Sunshine (visual arts. . . Kingdom Hearts didn't impress me too much, though I saw little.  The Mario water effects are stunning) or Animal Crossing (never played it, but people say it's good).
