Chris Kohler is probably the only gaming journalist I really respect.
I mean, there are some guys here at PGC, but I've talked to them on the forums and such, so I know most of them to a personal degree, which changes things.

Nice to see someone who really likes Red Steel.  My guess is that when you see the game in it's current state instead of in progress, you don't think of it as much like, "Oh, it's fixed that, but this is still broken".  Also, it sounds like maybe he was playing in a more closed environment which may help.

I was disappointed but not surprised by the Splinter Cell impressions.  I think Ubisoft is on the right track with supporting Wii heavily, but the company needs to ensure that everything is being built for Wii, not just ported cheaply.  Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of their early lineup is cheap ports.  I hope they keep that in mind when those games sell poorly.

Edit: for the record I think Wii controls could vastly improve Splinter Cell...he complains of complicated controls...well those have always been a problem for Splinter Cell.  I've never gotten past the training mission of the first game.  I think holding down A and performing a gesture could replace a ton of current moves in the game.

In that sense, Red Steel is ultimately for the hardcore gamers. Seriously, I remember having a Splinter Cell demo for PC and almost every single button on the keyboard did something.

I hate this.  Now I'm inclined to purchase Red Steel.
Mayhaps I'll get it when the price goes down.  Twilight Princess and Excitetruck maintain priority.

I'm inclined to buy, like 10-12 games, but I'm going to have to settle for 1 or 2.

I'm interested to hear real reviews of GT Pro or whatever.  He liked the steering wheel, but doesn't like racing simulation style games.  I'm into racing simulations and cel shading is awesome, so...me wantee.

I am pleased with these impressions and I hope that is what I end up thinking of Red Steel. The great thing about RS is that if it turns out to be a quality product, even if it is hampered a bit by controls, it will be a great stepping stone for the sequel.

I mostly really, really want Red Steel to succeed, partly for that reason and partly because I want third parties to be rewarded for investing in the Wii. Whether or not the controls for Red Steel turn out great, the studio has clearly put a lot of time and effort into it.
