That's not a fair comparison. If I had semi-daily reports on the status of my getting colon cancer, and was given the impression mere weeks before my 40th birthday that I was in the clear, I think I'd be fine with skipping the appointment for a bit.

Colorful example: my hat is off.

But what it really boiled down to is there was no downside to preordering. If Wiis are abundant on launch day, it's not like I don't get mine at the same time that the people waiting in line do. In fact, odds are in my favor that I WILL get it faster and that alone is worth it for me.

You wouldn't want to see me on the day before the Wii launch. Standing in line now is NOTHING compared to having to stand in line knowing that the console itself would be less than 50-60 feet from where I'm standing and I'm not already running off with it.

Call me an addict (cause it would be accurate), but odds are that I would be VERY difficult to live with in a line outside Wal-mart...

Outside?  For GameCube's launch I waited inside Walmart, at the electronics section, with fifteen or twenty other people at midnight.  By 12:05 we were all out the door.  That was a case not of me being worried about finding a system later in the day but just wanting to play it as soon as possible.  I had already driven three hours that day after a huge football game, so I managed to get about two or three hours of playing in before I collapsed.

Obviously I'm very anti-pre-ordering, but I don't want that to be taken as an attack on people who do it.  What I'm ridiculing is the practice itself, particularly in this situation of large launch shipments, and the corporations like GameStop which create mass hysteria for their pre-order programs based on unknown allocation numbers and their general, greedy fervor to have people pre-order absolutely anything.  As I've said in this thread and elsewhere, if you have a pre-order already, you might as well keep it, and I just hope you didn't suffer too much to get it.  My words are more to encourage people who could not get a pre-order before the program was stopped, or people who are on the fence about whether it's really necessary.  Those are the people with potential to create unfounded Wii shortage hype, which would be misleading and unfortunate.  Those who pre-ordered give no cause for worry in this regard.

The question in the podcast was "Should people who didn't get a pre-order be worried about getting a system on launch day?"  And as you heard, we all thought not.  That question is the basis for this discussion, not "Are people who pre-order just stupid?"

I just got a call from my buddy at GameCrazy telling me that they're only getting 9 Wii's for launch day, so the 12 of the 21 people who preordered are out of luck.  I am second on the list of preorders since I preordered it way back in March.  I was supposed to be first, but some dude did the manager a big "favor".

Like Smash_Brother, I'd rather preorder than not.  In case there's a sellout, having it guaranteed to be there for you is better than driving around town hoping to run into one.  That was my experience with the Cube, and that was 4 months after launch!

On another note, this is the first console that I've preordered, ever.  I'm so excited! *dorkgasms*

Yeah, I'm sure that Gamestop and other preorder locales have a goddamn ball whipping people into a frenzy to preorder so they get the money in advance.

I'm still very much hoping to weasel my Wii out of there sooner than midnight... (doesn't that just sound dirty?)

You're not being sarcastic, are you?  Because they actually do.  That's why you can pre-order ANYTHING at these stores, and the employees constantly badger customers to put money down on any game they might even possibly be interested in six months down the line.

Not being sarcastic at all.

Like I said, if I didn't have store credit and know someone there, I would have preordered elsewhere without issue.

I'm not pre-ordering this time around.  Well, I might, but I'm not going to try very hard.  I went to the Gamestop near me and their Wii pre-orders were gone, so I didn't bother going anywhere else.  I didn't think it was worth my time.

Wii isn't like the PS3, where you know for a fact that they won't have any on launch day so a pre-order is 100% necessary if you're going to get it before next year.  Worst case, I figure I might have to hit several Targets/Wal-Marts/Best Buys/Circuit Citys before I find one, but they'll be out there.  There's tons of these stores where I live so I'll just keep going until I find one.

Are you serious?  Thats counter to what we've been hearing from everywhere about the number of available units.

I preordered. I only waited an hour and a half to do so, but I'm not freaking out like I would be otherwise. You could tell me I have a 99% of getting a Wii on launch day by walking in and getting one and I would still be like, "Yeah, that's good and all... but that damned one percent..." Peace of mind for the win.

To note on other stuff:

I have recently gained an appreciation for Sega, or old school Sonic games more specifically. I've played the Sonics for for the GBA and DS, but I never really played any of the 2D Sonic games when they first came out and just a few weeks ago I started playing them via the Sonic Mega Collection, and they're really fun. Better then the Advance series. I don't think they're on the level of SMB3 or SMW, but they're different kinds of platformers. I look forward to Sega's content on the Virtual Console as I've played most of the Nintendo games that I've ever had interest in.

Okami is currently my pick for game of the year. Obviously I've yet to play Twilight Princess, but Okami is so freaking good. And Jonny is right, it's a Nintendo game on the PS2. Simple as that. It's sad that I didn't beat this game before I learned of Clover's demise because sometimes I think "They'll never make another game like this" as I'm going through it and that thought depresses me.

I remain wholly optomistic for Elite Beat Agents.

I wish these things were longer. Even if the 'casts were just incoherent rambling, I'd be cool with it.

I have an Okami wallpaper on my desktop right now (a fitting tribute to the departed Clover, I think.) And yet I still don't own the game. What is wrong with me?

Nate, I think we all wish they were longer, but wandering's right - the folk won't stand for it. They don't want to listen to a two-hour epic, no matter how much Stan and I want to do it pretty much every day.

Well, even if they would stand for it - people saying 'I wish that was longer' is the best possible reaction you can get for anything. Which is why, when you're serving people mancakes, delicious as they may be, you should only give them just enough so that they still crave more mancakes when they're done.

Ho ho, Evan's being pissy today.

I think we have a good, tight length for these podcasts.  What I would be totally cool with is having two episodes per week, provided they are somewhat different flavors.  But we'd have to get more people involved than we currently do.  It takes a lot of man-hours to organize, record, and edit these things.  I have it easy; I just show up and yack for half an hour.

You know back in early days of Japan there wasn't majority consensus no it had to be unanimous before the decision was approved.  This guaranteed that the groups of  decision makers  were mostly content with the decision and that none of them could be singled out for retribution if the were not originally for something or the vice versa.  This is a good system for a small set of people but the downside is that with a large amount somethings could never get done and with any amount of people the time it takes to do something will always be much longer.

But we'd have to get more people involved than we currently do. It takes a lot of man-hours to organize, record, and edit these things. I have it easy; I just show up and yack for half an hour.

Then here's what you do: beef up your podacst section!  Hire a seperate site member to organize, record, and edit the podcast.  Then mix it up a bit; have readers come up with topic topics in a more formal manner (set up a separate email address just for podcast ideas).  It doesn't have to be all news, and I'm sure readers could come up with some interesting discussion ideas.  Hell, if you're having trouble finding people willing to give up their night podcasting, get some forum readers to guest star GET IAN.  The fact that readers can contribute topics and even possibly be on the podcast will get people more active in the PGC community.  And that's always a good thing.  If your podcast is bi-weekly it really doens't have to be a huge production.  Perhaps you'll get a few good ideas from readers that you can't really flesh out into an entire show.  Well then have two guys get together and rip out a 20 minute segment going from one thing to the next.  You guys have the mailbag for quick question and answer, so make the podcast the "editorial" version of that.

The podcast has already proven to be very popular, so why not capitalize on that?  Make it a major part of the PGC "experience."  Radio/Planet trivia is a unique thing you guys do that makes this site special.  Make the podcast with that same idea in mind: make it something MORE than just another podcast.  I think community involvement is the key.
