Hey guys do I need a component cable to get 480P or will the standard RCA Jacks work fine.  Gamestop is trying to charge people 60.00 bucks for this cable. Shame on them!!

You will only get 480p if your TV supports it, even if your TV has a component slot it does not mean your tv supports 480p. However if your TV does not support 480p yet it still has the component slot then you are still better off getting the component cables.

The $60 component cable they have is from MadCatz. Nintendo will have their own component cables on launch day, and for much less, don't expect to pay for it more than $30.

If you pay $60 for an HDMI cable you're getting screwed. Your getting screwed with no lube for buying a component cable at that price as well, unless it's about 50 feet long.

Proprietary connectors gotta love'em.  You know I was wondering how NOA would find a way to mess us over with cable price.  They just hold off on the component cable...

I put up the pricing of the component cables (in Japan) in the following Thread. Considering the price there, I don't expect the component cables here to exceed that price by more than $10 (so $30 max).

The PAL cables are probably different. US and Japan both use NTSC, so they will get the same cables. Scart is not an option on most TVs in the US.

It would say "progressive scan compatible" as part of the feature list.. look in the guide if necessary.

If it cost and arm and a leg more then other TVs of the same size.... you've probably got 480P.

If you see markings that say either EDTV or HDTV, then you also know you've definatly got 480P.

First it has to have component inputs (a set of Red-Green-Blue inputs on the back). If not, don't bother doing anymore research

If it does, follow the previous advice. Find the magic words "480p" or "progressive scan" in the manual.

Actually if it has Component doesn't it have to support at least 480p at that point?

No, actually.. Component outputs don't guarantee that the TV is progressive scan - that's why even when you buy DVD players you have to make sure that they're progressive scan compatible and not just that they have component outputs.

Do component inputs on a TV offer anything over composite if your TV doesn't support 480p?

They offer the cleanest, most vibrant interlaced video you'll get as a consumer.  You won't get the motion clarity benefited from p.scan, but your pixel definition will definitely improve.  The next logical step above S-Video.

I've been looking hard for a good 27-32 inch 480p CRT for less than $500 CDN.. That would be wonderful, but no luck so far. It's either HD or nothing these days..
