Question about Wii tennis.
« on: October 11, 2006, 06:22:19 PM »
Well, I was watching some videos of people playing Wii tennis and it got me thinking, where's the challenge in it?  I mean you don't have to even move your character and I can't see how this could be fun for more than 5 minuts.  Doase it matter which side of your body you swing from? Is there more to it than just blindly swinging?  I just want to know if I'll even be enjoying the game.  This goes mostly to whoever has played Wii tennis.

I haven't played it, but from what I've read and seen...

Yes, it matters which side you swing on: backhands and forehands are all part of the game!

Wii Tennis is complex enough to track the angle your racquet hit the ball at, and can calculate whether you sliced the ball or not. It can also determine how strong your hit was so that a weaker hit won't travel as far.
I don't know if it can actually detect you trying to lob the ball though...

I actually had similar "depth" questions regarding Wii Golf...

Rather, I think that Wii Sports is a simple, pick-up and play demo-esque experience that will get non-gamers hooked and give them a taste of what lies out there for them. If you liked Wii Golf, then you'll start looking to buy Super Swing Golf, or Tiger Woods. If you liked Wii Tennis, then you'll really be looking forward to Virtua Tennis Wii or whatever. If you liked Wii Boxing... surely there's a third party out there working on a boxing Wii game?

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

It really depends on who you ask. I personally think that it's fun for a few minutes, but the lack of depth and a real challenge didn't leave a mark on me. I honestly think it would have been more fun if you had more contol of your player, but basically all you're doing is hitting the ball when it comes near you. That, and the boring style of the game didn't really leave a mark on me. I played two rounds of it when the Fusion Tour came to my school, and when my turn was over...it didn't really bum me out. It was just like "mmm, ok" and I haven't really had a desire to play the game again.

It's one thing to have a deceptively simple game, that's quick to pick up and play but really has a plethora of quircky options and mechanics to go through. But Tennis didn't give me that kind of impression. It was just sort of...hit the ball.

That's exactly what I was afraid of.

Well, since I sucked playing the Tennis game by myself at E3, I'm sure it offers some challenge (or I was doing it wrong). It's meant to be multiplayer to a degree, so perhaps that is where it shines. (Can you believe I'm holding out hope and being positive? Blech, someone shoot me in the face.)
