Wii production exceeding expectations

In a note to clients on Thursday, Guana also stated that 7 to 9 million are expected to be built in the fourth quarter of 2006, putting the firm ahead of its 6 million unit production goal.

A possibility of 9 million Wii's by the END OF THE YEAR? Wasn't the original goal 6 million by March? This would be absolutely massive if true, and it could possibly explain all the DS shortages. Wii could outsell Xbox 360 and take the lead in mere weeks.

Blitzkreig?

Are there even 9 million people willing to buy the Wii at launch?

The link isn't working, so I'm going to assume that this was an elaborate fabrication on the part of Mario.

Quit apostrophying "Wiis".  It's not "Wii's".

If there are 9 million people willing to buy the Wii as soon as 9 million units are available, then it'll surely overtake the GameCube's sales and then Nintendo doesn't have to worry about it being a possible "failure" as they said.

I mean, sheesh, I thought there were only 20something million GameCubes sold so far?

If we really want to be picky, it should be "Wii systems" or "Wii consoles". I remember Nintendo sending out a message a while back (probably through their press site) about how people should say "GameBoy Advance Systems" and not "GameBoy Advances".

Thanks for listening.

Just another reason...I wish Nintendo was actually releasing the system earlier.  Because now we know Nintendo actually has the stock for it.

I am going to predict that each market at the end of this year will have about 2 million Wiis available to purchase throughout the holiday season.

That is pretty amazing numbers.

9 million is huge.  I have a feeling Nintendo isn't going to sell out this Christmas.  They'll still probably sell quite well but there isn't going to be a shortage or anything.  It's good that they're meeting demand but this that kind of production they might be greatly exceeding demand.

Spak we can't forget there is more to a system launch than how many units are going to be available, you have to take into consideration the polishing of games coming out for it as well. Personally I think that is why Nintendo delayed the launch, in order to give themselves and other 3rd parties time to polish their games.

Ah ha!  Well, they should probably by saying "Game Boy" and not "GameBoy"!  Or spelling it, anyway.

It might not be bad news if the Wii doesn't sell out this Christmas.  That would mean that everyone who wants one is guaranteed to have one.

I agree with VG, the extra time will definitely be put to good use by the developers. 9 million is a huge number and it seems like they should not flood the market with too many. Since Nintendo has a huge amount of Wiis in stock they could probably create an artificial shortage to build up a higher demand, and then be able to satisfy that demand immediately after to really capatalize. If they can manage to sell out 9 million Wiis by the end of the year I have a feeling Nintendo has a huge opportunity to take over the gaming industry.

Are artificial shortages illegal?

Anyways, this is still a RUMOR.

If this is true, then sony still would spin it that they sold out all of their ps3 when they only sold 0.4 million while nintendo sell 20 times that..

"Are artificial shortages illegal?"

nope, see M$ 360 launch

It's entirely possible that "fourth quarter of 2006" and "March of 2007" are the same thing if they're talking about the fiscal year.

Yep.  They could mean March.  Even if they did produce 9 Million Wiis.  Don't get your hope up.  They won't be released all at once and from what I can tell this is still a rumor.

I believe they expect to SELL 6 million by March, according to their forecast. Still, good news if true. They'd likely have an inventory stockpiled until ordered by the channels, though.

So confusing...

But aren't these numbers just speculation on the analysts part? Saying that they may be able to do this?

And how does this jive with IGN's own rumor-worthy 5.5-6 million in Fiscal year 2006 gesticulations?

August 5th 2003 they had about 9.6 million Cubes sold and were going to stop production because they had too much stock... So 9 million wiis sounds like overkill.. unless the Wii can somehow muster supermassive momentum and PS3 orphans turn to Wii instead of 360.

Well from the sounds of the article this is just the console not the controllers. They need both to ship. And yes they forth quarter 2006 ends March 2007. This is just an estimate based on semiconductor flow. 9 million is a lot, I think this just gives Nintendo breathing room they said 6 million because that is what they want ship to keep a steady flow but they can increase the number if they have a DS type sell out in one market.

More evil laughter!  I don't expect Nintendo to release 9 million in 2006 or even by the end of March, but if Wii actually sells at this rate, Nintendo could easily catch up with Xbox 360's lead before next Christmas.  That's amazing!

I expect actual sales to be lower than this, at least for a while, but who knows?

"And yes they forth quarter 2006 ends March 2007."

You guys should stop trying to confuse yourselves and everyone else. We all know that 4th Quarter 2006 ends Dec. 31, 2006, Fiscal year 2006 on the other hand ends in March of 2007.

And if it is true that they have exceeded production capabilities as much as they have, then I expect them to have many Black Wii's for launch. I will not pick up a Wii at launch until they release a Black one.

I read that it's a maximum of 11 million built by the end of the year, rather than 9.  Two million in the 3rd quarter and 7-9 million in the 4th quarter of 2006.
