A similar thing happened with the DS.

At launch there were VERY few games that truly showed off what the handheld could be. The third party games were enhanced GBA games with some tacked on DS features. It took nearly a year till we finally got inspired games from both Nintendo and third parties. And not the DS is not only a success, it's a worldwide phenomenon. Certainly a few bad games at launch didn't kill it.

While I too am not impressed with how third party developers are treating the Wii this isn't the end of the world. So far its only been a couple of games that look questionable in quality. The rest looks really solid. And the best is yet to come.

So don't go out preaching the end of the world because a couple of Wii games look un-polished.

Just be grateful that we are getting third party support at launch and that Nintendo isn't being nitpicky about it.

Also, both the PSone and PS2 featured some really bad games, made only to cash in on the success of the consoles yet people didn't pay much attention to it. Same with the GB, GB color and GBA.

okay okay, i may be ranting a bit much.  But to my respect you have to see that Farcry and Call ouf Duty look like GCN games and I have to say that is unacceptable.  Thats all i am saying, atleast DS games looked better for the most part than GBA.

alright no more bitchin from me, especially when games like Rayman, Zelda, ExciteTruck, Red Steel, even Madden look pretty.

The only way to look at it right now is at least we're getting games we never thought we'd see. Like Farcry and Call Of Duty, at launch no less.

Just a shame both are so deeply ugly. They'll probably flop, and we'll never see those franchises again. If they succeed, EA will take that as a sign that even the shoddiest ports will sell, and we'll never see improvement.

I said it once after the controller was first revealed: the Wii will stand or fall on the strength of its exclusives.

Just so you know, I am not a big fan of these games. The only Call of Duty game I played was the CoD 2 demo for the 360 and me and my friends were left unimpressed with Farcry (GLASS KNEES!).

All I'm saying is that people are ranting too much about a couple of games not looking fantastic, almost seeing this as a potential downfall for the Wii when in reality is not that big of a deal.

In ALL console launches there will be games that will be utter crap while others become killer APPs of their respective machines.

The same thing will happen to the Wii. Not ALL games that will come at and after launch be triple A titles and truth to be told, the best ones will come from Nintendo.

But like I said, the PSone and PS2 were filled with thousands of crappy games and it didn't destroy them. In fact, people were attracted by the fact that both consoles featured a HUGE library of games.

At least the Wii is getting that kind of support from the start. And like Omen said, we are getting games that we never thought a Nintendo console would get.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that these games are still under development. They have one more month to finish the game and they can use that to make it better. So who knows, maybe the games will be better looking by the launch.

The biggest texture in mario 64 (not including title screens) is 64x32.  Occasionaly, 2 32X64 textures were put together to make a 64x64 texture.

I think this is the biggest problem. Big name games need to come out on the Wii that aren't Nintendo made. Almost all of the great games on the Cube were Nintendo. I want huge titles on the Wii that are non Nintendo too. The Wii needs more non Nintendo system sellers if it is going to bring in the masses.

ANNNNND we're back to this again. Oh yay.

All I know is that I intend to buy a TON of third party games on the Wii, and hopefully my Wii collection will look more like my DS collection instead of my N64 collection. My most treasured DS memories have been on third party games.

And this game WILL be in my Wii collection. I enjoyed the first Call of Duty and played it over and over, I'll do the same here.

I guess I don't mean to be so negative, the graphics are passable and it really is about the gameplay experience. I agree Kairon, the DS has done a great job of bringing out the third parties and I'm sure you are right, the Wii will also do the same. I just really want to see Nintendo succeed this time so that we have a great selection of extremely unique games this generation. Enough negativity today, I'm sure the great games will far outweigh the bad.

PS - Its been a bad day for me, my damned computer dropped dead out of the blue and now I will have to drop a grand or more to pick up something comparable so I can do my work, not to mention figure out someway to retrieve all the data from my HDD.

sounds like a rushed launch title albeit with a couple of interesting control features.  Rental or $20 or $30 price drop.

Can't believe people are still complaining about lack of big 3rd party titles, for the first time in a LONG time there are 3 games that are getting alot of praise that are not 1st party for Wii at launch. Those games include Red Steel, Rayman and Madden. You also have games that may be sleeper hits like Elebits.  Red Steel has tons of potential to be a new series yet people conveniently forget it along with Rayman and Madden. All 3 have tons of potential and could easily be big sellers, can you say that about any 3rd parties previously at launch for a Nintendo system since the N64 days? Heck no!  Even before N64 and GC's launches there wasn't any game regarded as having as much potential as the 3 I mentioned (Monkey Ball is the only one I can think of).

alot of praise [...] Red Steel

Since when? Everyone seems hyped for Red Steel, except for the people who have actually played it. I hate to say this, but I'm expecting it to be nothing more than an EA Bond level shooter.

Since it was first unveiled...

Red Steel is...

1. The first major Wii title ever revealed

2. An exclusive "mature" title for a Nintendo console

3. An exclusive "mature" THIRD PARTY title for a Nintendo console

4. A new franchise from a third party created exclusive for a Nintendo console

Regardless of quality, the game will do well based on those facts. Nintendo has hyped Red Steel more than Twilight Princess or any of the other launch games and I wouldn't be surprised if the advertisement is split between Red Steel and Twilight Princess.

I'm not that excited about the game (a friend of mine is, though, and I am going to see what he thinks of it before I play it), but I expect it to be good. The way I see it, Red Steel could be like Geist. The game was flawed in some areas, but its execution and story were good enough that it won people over.

The controls, while I don't necessarily doubt that they're functional, sound totally lame.  Not that I was really interested to begin with (WWII?  yawn).

Thanks for taking what I said completely out of context :-P.  Yeah Red Steel has been getting mixed hands-on reviews, but opinion of it has been improving as the final polishing touches are being put on it, with really the only complaints centering more on the controls which will most likely improve when the final version is released. Regardless both Rayman and Madden Wii have been getting alot of praise (especially Madden) and that still is something new for a Nintendo console since the N64 days.

Slightly off topic, but I thought Far Cry actually looks really nice. I honestly don't see the big deal. The textures do look blurry, but the models seem to have a decent polygon count, nice lighting, and beautiful reflections in the water. I can't see any of that in COD3.

I think the main problem with Far Cry is that when the Wii screenshots are held up against the original Xbox's screenshots they look worse. It really looks like UBI just rushed it to make launch and have taken no time to optimize it for the Wii other than the control scheme.

Which is dumb, since they'll only be competing with RS if anything. Holding it up six months and releasing it after MP3 would have been the sensible thing to do.

Look at these grainy Far Cry Wii scans and see if you notice any difference from the blur-fest Far Cry screens we recently saw on IGN.
