Yahoo editor's take on the Wii
« on: September 29, 2006, 11:38:39 AM »
here you can read the article. Also the user comments are nice, some of the people seem to have genuinely never heard of the system before and have some good comments. others are obviously fanboys, and others yet are obvious haters. all in all a good read.

edit: linked to the second page of comments by mistake the first time

The console will be available November 19th in the U.S., with a price tag of $249. This includes two controllers (the wireless Wii remote and the wired Nunchuck), and the five-in-one Wii Sports title.
Haha.  Sort of misleading.  Just sort of.

Number 5 has drunk the other sides Kool-aid.  He probably didn't look at the launch or read anything about it really.  If you can't make an informed opinion in a general area then don't.

Number 6 needs to learn to spell and release that most people aren't allowed to dedicate their main TV to Videogames and that Broadcaster will still not be totally HD in 4 years.

Number 12 ride on.  Ride on.

I'm going to stop there to many comments.  Though overall it was ok.  It would have been good if the gentleman who wrote this would have done a little research.  Also the game comparison was very very misleading and the controller thing too.

This is a good article to get a feel for what someone who doesn't religiously follow videogame news thinks of the Wii.  I think all the points he made regarding the console are quite informative.  Plus his pros and cons all seem logical without any obvious bias or blatant ignorance affecting his opinion (though he really shouldn't compare the Wii launch lineup to the year's worth of X360 games).  I find it interesting how he finds the name "goofy".  At least he doesn't mention it sounds like piss but I doubt he would have used "goofy" to describe a name like "Revolution".

"Boy, do my arms hurt: Whether 'casting' a fishing rod to catch virtual bass in Zelda or tossing a bowling ball in Wii Sports, I nearly dislocated my shoulder using the wireless controller. Shoulder pain may be the gamers' new carpal tunnel syndrome as far as Wii's motion-based gameplay is concerned."

I don't like the sound of this.  I believe this issue has been brought up several times and has usually been dismissed by defenders.  Well the issue seems to be real since this guy had problems with it.

And I agree that Nintendo shouldn't be so damn wishy-washy about what resolution the console is at.  The result is a negative comment in a mainstream article that could have been completely avoided if Nintendo didn't act all secretive for no reason.

The guy obviously isn't used to physical activity.

Well, anyone without a BASIC EDUCATION for a standardized activity is prone to make obtuse movements.

Really, REAL bowling is more likely give you shoulder pain (the Wii Remote weighs less than a full 12oz can of soda, true?).  Is this guy a hulking mass of JABBA THE COUCH POTATO tech writer?  Should I even approach that assumption?   This is interweb, afterall.

More likely he just isn't playing right. Everyone I've read has said that small movements are key, but many of them took a while to figure this out. A really fast flick of the wrist in fishing will register as a harder pull than a massive swing of the arm, because the acceleration is greater.

That's exactly right.  People are probably exxagerating the motion upon first trying it out.

Considering that I'm not in good shape and I can play a whole game of bowling with an honest-to-goodness 14 lb ball without getting shoulder pain, I have to wonder what he did to himself.  It's been a while since I've been fishing, but I never got tired from that particular activity, either.  Maybe I'm a defensive fanboy, but I cannot even fathom how something that isn't tiring to do for reals could possibly be tiring when sitting on a couch holding a tiny controller.

Thats kinda why all of the previews bug me.  They show games like Red steel where people have their arms FULLY EXTENDED to play, when the controller can simply be resting on your knee.  I like the idea of showing the controller functionality, but I am afraid they are giving people the wrong idea.

I just thought of something.  When bowling, the weight of the ball keeps you from flailing around too much.  Maybe this guy wrenched his shoulder trying to hurtle the virtual ball as hard as he could.

The specs. page i also misleading, or just plain wrong.  For game media is says that it takes gamecube dics, nothing more.   TO someone who doesnt know better that could be a potential turn-off.

Strap a 10lb weight around your wrist when you play with your Wii.

If Nintendo ever released any specs it would avoid any problems like that.  People think specs matter so websites and magazines are going to just make them up.  Has Nintendo being wishy-washy about something ever actually paid off?  They fail to provide straight answers all the time yet all that ever seems to happen from it is confusion and misinformation being spread.  Is there something Nintendo can point to and say "See?  By being unclear and dodging questions this incredibly beneficial thing happened that wouldn't have if we were straightforward."

"I just thought of something. When bowling, the weight of the ball keeps you from flailing around too much. Maybe this guy wrenched his shoulder trying to hurtle the virtual ball as hard as he could."

Maybe the bowling in the game is just a little off.  Like you throw the ball as you normally would for a strike, it goes straight down the middle, but it doesn't hit the pins hard enough to cause them to all fall down.  In that case you would probably start throwing harder than you normally would because the physics of the game are just slightly off of real life.  Imagine a game where your best golf swing sent the ball only two feet.  You would probably start wailing on your swing to compensate.  It's not going to be that extreme but something being off could make you do something different than you did before.

Sure he should, because that's the reality of the situation. It's the advantage of being first to market.

Yeah but don't people kind of expect that?  It's just not realistic for Nintendo to have 100 launch titles.  When launching later it's all about what games you've got because you can never compete regarding how many.

Shoulder pain may be the gamers' new carpal tunnel syndrome as far as Wii's motion-based gameplay is concerned.

I think this was meant as a joke, but based on limited knowledge of typing style injuries, I believe that the Wii controller will be much less prone to repetetive stress injuries.  With a normal controller, your hands are brought together and you are doing the exact same motion over and over.  With the Wii, your hands are free of each other and swithing in a much less restricted way.

So even if a did require big movements (which they don't), the most you would probably see is tired muscles, not actually injury.

Absolutely, but when the customer goes to the store, it's still the question they're facing.

(though if Nintendo had been a little less limited in their VC offerings they could've genuinely had well over 100 launch titles)

I liked how the dude doens't even know that the Wii will not be 720p.  Ah try Google next time bud.

I thought his comment about 100 games for the 360 was bunk.  There's not even close to 100 games for the 360 out unless you include the Live Arcade titles.  And  even if there are, well 75% aren't worth getting.  PLus he didn't mention the Virtual Console which would give a ton of new titles plus Gamecube backward compatibility.  Plus the Wii will have plenty of titles to start with tho only 15 at launch.  Still how many titles does a guy need????  I wouldn't call it a thin launch lineup either.  The DS launch lineup was thin.  This one will be pretty solid.

Also lame how his shoulder hurt in his short time with it.  I work all dam day doing phystical labor and all dam week and he's whining about the Wii hurting shoulder.  What a joke.

Sorry, but kind of a lame article.

Colbert would be proud...

Also, had a good laugh at some of the comments, especially the one on the first page:

the wii would be a good choice if i were say 10 years old. unfortunately im 25, so i will be shelling out the cash for the ps3. i already have 360 and absolutely love it, but the ps3 is worth it just for the blu-ray player alone not to mention some of the great games that are only on PS3. i play video games in my ltille spare time to relax, the last thing i want to do is work up a sweat playing a game that i have to flail my arms around like an bad at. sorry nintendo, but you have been dead since the release of nintendo 64.

lol, my sister had to point me to the Article, and then i found someone already posted a thread on this.

Personally i think the guy was being an idiot everytime he tried to compare things.  For example he compared Sony's Launch shipment of 400,000 to Nintendo's year end shipment of 4,000,000 units.  He's not even being fair to Sony in this case.

It's as if the guy was given 5min to do the article and all the search engines on the interweb were mysteriously broken.

P.S. For a self proclaimed Tech hound, he should really start sniffing around the electronics sites for some info.
