Look for some advice with Apartment Problems
« on: September 24, 2006, 05:54:59 PM »
My wife just got a job that puts her about 2 and a half hours away from me.  So she had to get another apartment.  After looking around for a place that would be cost effective for us we finally settle on one.

It's about a third of the size of the apartment that I am currently living in but 75 dollars more with nothing included. (Apartments are more expensive there).  First they "cleaned" the apartment before we moved her in. It was still pretty dirty.  Next we find out that the outside closet lock does not work.  After that my wife finds a place that she believes is termites.  Now she has just gotten home from a pleasant visit with me over the weekend.  The place sort of smells still because it use to house a smoker, which it wasn't suppose too, so she opened the windows.  She went to close the windows and the glass fell out.  Now she has to get to leave for work at 6:30 in the morning for training she has to go to or she'll probably be fired.

I live in the USA and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I could do.  This is ridiculous.  I thought about the BBB but I don't know of rental stuff is considered a business or not.  Any suggestions be greatly appreciated.

I'd say try the BBB or the Building Inspector (for the termite issue). I live in an apartment complex that I've had so many problems with its insane. The first town house I lived in was a nightmare with many problems, but due to room mate I wasn't able to really take action with the complex about bringing in the Building Inspector. The unit I'm in now is alright I guess but, there are some problems that just never get fixed and if they do they are fixed shoddily. I don't really have any ammunition to take them to court (being sucky landlords doesn't really warrant time in court). But Ceric if I were you I'd call the Building Inspector and the BBB and let them know whats up at least, they might not be the best solution but they also might be able to move things in the right direction for you. In the least, if there are termite problems, and the BI comes, the apartments will be shutdown until fixes have been made, and your wife will be put in another suitable apartment on the landlord's dime. Hope that helps a bit.

What state do you live in? You may have some recourse through the housing department.

ShyGuy:  I live in Tennesse, USA

Ok to answer your question 18 Days we do not live together because my Wife graduated from school back last December.  Since that time she has been looking for a real job.  She was working at Walmart and even though the pay better then most retailers the health benefits are bad, she never got more then 30 hours because there is no one to get a full time job at Walmart.  Needless to say I was paying most of the bills and going to school.  Earlier in the Year we had gottened married so she couldn't use the Wedding as an excuse anymore not to find a decent paying job.  She applied a lot of places and ended up being accepted for a position that is 2 and a half hours away from where we live to go to school.  So in the end I still have a Semester to go at school.  For the meantime she is living there and when I get out of school it's close enough to Nashville that I could commute and hopefully find a job.  If not we are really messed over because we couldn't live on her salary.

She did inspect it, I had no free time to go with her.  It was actually the best of what was available.  The alternative had Mold and spiders.

There aren't very many apartments to be had around there.

Update:  They did fix that Window that morning.  Everything else I'm not sure about.
