RUMORS: Super Paper Mario on Wii?
« on: September 07, 2006, 10:11:44 PM »
Will GCN's last lifeline be severed?

Gamer forums and fan sites have been rumbling with rumors this past week that Super Paper Mario will be delayed and released on Wii rather than GameCube, the system it was announced for at E3 2006. Several sites, including GameSpot, have changed the release date for Super Paper Mario from October 9th to Q1 2007. NOA's site has kept the October 9th date even though the Japanese version was delayed and is currently without a release date. Fueling the fire was a confirmation of the game's move from GC to Wii by IGNWii's Matt Cassamassina in a recent Wii Mailbag update.

The evidence seems to be mounting, but at this time every report has been mere speculation. When asked about the release date for Super Paper Mario, Nintendo reps defaulted to previously released information that indicated the game would release in Q4 2006. Interestingly, the Nintendo rep we spoke with did not specify October 9th, the date originally given by Nintendo in a post-E3 press release. Nothing was mentioned about a move to Wii, but of course Wii is scheduled for a fourth quarter release as well.

Although it is entirely possible Super Paper Mario could be moved to Wii, no evidence currently supports this. The rumor is unsubstantiated and the statements seem to be mere speculation. A delay is also possible, but there is something important to note: Nintendo is more than willing to release a game in the US before Japan, for example Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. At this time, October 9th is what we're being told by Nintendo, and at the very least we can depend on Q4 2006 no matter which system it comes out on. If Nintendo does release Super Paper Mario on GC it should not effect sales since GameCube games can be played on Wii. If Nintendo opts for a port to Wii, anticipate it before year's end.

Once I finally finish Fire Emblem, I don't think I'll ever play my Gamecube again (except to revisit the best of the games).  I considered getting Chibi Robo, but I never went ahead and now I've lost interest.  At the moment I'm just looking forward to Wii.

I really need a dense adventure game like Zelda or Metroid (both of which are coming out, God bless).  I don't think I've played a good one since. . . I dunno.  Metroid Prime 2, maybe.  Might be forgetting one.
And don't get me wrong, I love platformers and puzzle games and adventure games and all that, even the occasional RPG.  But it's just been too long since I had a real Nintendo adventure masterpiece to get lost in for a few weeks.

Although I prefer it to arrive on GameCube, I can see some strategic value in putting Super Paper Mario on Wii to make up for a likely delay of Super Mario Galaxy to later in 2007.

The series is zany enough that I'm sure NIntendo can add some neat little features that can only be done on Wii. If it was really moved to Wii I am willing to bet it hasn't been a recent thing, probaly shortly after E3.

Yeah, the GameCube didn't have a "Mario game" at launch.  This could be a ploy to assure Wii launches with a Mario game.  That'll come back and bite them, though, since the Wii controller support will be minimal at best.  You don't want your users' first impressions of the Wii controller to be "so what," and folks tend to pick up Mario games first.  (Obviously the Zelda launch title mixes things up a bit.)

I like to say that through this whole launch Nintendo has been shooting holes through their credibility.  Back in the Day the Release date was the Release date.  I'm hoping this is just a launch thing and they'll stop delaying things and actually stick with their time table.

I'm not sure which "day" you are referring to Ceric.  Nintendo has always delayed things.

umm.. i remember having to wait through something like half a dozen different delays for Ocarina of Time.  I'm not sure that any N64 game ever shipped when they first said it would.  They've gotten much better about that with the GameCube, but there are still games that have shifted or disappeared entirely coughKirbycough.

'Back in the day", I remember that you knew a game was coming out when you saw it on the shelf at the store.  We had no fancy enter-web and Nintendo hotlines for our news.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

Nintendo not delaying? LMAO. That never happened. The only reason any games came out in the last two years of the 64's life was because they were delayed from the first 3.

At least this isn't even a delay. It'll still be out within the same period. That's good for Nintendo.

I'm not sure it will be minimal, they may have been implementing it since early post E3. I just don't think it is fair to say it will be minimal at best when we have no idea about the production story with this game, but we'll see!

Yeah, the GameCube didn't have a "Mario game" at launch.

I tend to think of Luigi's Mansion as a "mario game." Actually, I tend to think of it as the best Mario game ever released on the Cube. But whatever.

Allthough I've said I'd prefer a dual release ala TP, if the wiimote functions aren't amazwiing, I think launching this on the cube, around the same time as the Wii launch, would be a good strategy. They've done it before, with Gameboy, anyway.

Heck even the first years too the games were delayed.  How long did we wait for goldeneye?  Originally designed as a shooter on rails, they were given the time to re-work the game.
