Radio Free Nintendo - Episode 15
« on: August 30, 2006, 05:42:43 PM »
For this week's second podcast, Stan and Karl join the venerable Mike Sklens to talk about the gaming apocalypse.

ET: Extra Terrible

It's been a long-held theory that Nintendo Pirate Radio and Radio Free Nintendo   can't get along. The fiery-eyed tension of the episode Evan and I did a couple   weeks ago is proof of this, so I was reluctant to try a merger again. However, when   Mike "StrikerObi" Sklens returned from his recent time off, offering up copious   amounts of alcohol, Stan and I opened up our arms... to his liquor cabinet. What   follows is...

Episode 15: Come Ride My Dark Horseman

AAC Format

MP3 Format

You can also listen to the podcast on Odeo.

powered by ODEO

Get your mind out of the gutter! Ever since the video game crash of the mid-  eighties, gamers have been predicting when the sequel will arrive. With the next   generation of consoles spurring these theories on even further, we thought it'd be   a  good idea to address the most popular ones. Come listen as Stan, Mike and I   discuss the Four Horsemen of the Gaming Apocalypse.

Also discussed tonight are the various reasons I'm not qualified to work here: I   didn't like the original Zelda, I use strategy guides (even for easy games!), and I'm   a total shill for corporations. So, tell me why I should be fired at our email address.   And if you've got something nice to say, well, what podcast were you listening to?

Also, bring your lazy asses into the Talkback section. Otherwise, I'm gonna kill a   puppy, and it'll be all your fault.

But I haven't even listened to episode 14 yet!

Didn't like the original Zelda? What is wrong with you?

No, seriously, that just isn't right.

Keep in mind, Shy, that Zelda came out a few years before I was even born, let alone old enough to realy play video games. By the time I eventually played it, I just found it too archaic to enjoy. I recognize its importance in gaming history and all, but that doesn't mean I have to love it. I guess I'm just not that old school.

Couldn't you guys cut the show to 30 minutes? After a while it's just blah blah blah *attention span lost*.

You guys should really do a podcast about video games you LIKE. I swear the last few you've done nothing but bash games, and nearly all of them in the spectrum from bad to good. I think at one point one of you actually had bad things to say about the New Super Mario Bros. And to say only 1 game was worth getting on the Cube? I've got 41 games on the Cube that says otherwise, and while they're not ALL amazing they are worth it.

Well, honestly you guys need to renew my faith in the hobby I enjoy so much instead of boiling every game that you come accross as cannon fodder.

We praise lots of games. In this very podcast, we said great things about Melee, Viewtiful Joe, Metal Gear Solid (3, I think, but I'm not positive), and that thing about New Super Mario Bros. was that, while it wasn't innovative, it was still fun. That's just the plain truth, man.

And it's called "Four Horsemen of the Gaming Apocalypse." What did you expect?

That being said, you're right in that we are negative a little too often. It usually boils down that way because it's easier to be funny when you're talking about the likes of Greg Hastings. But I'll take what you said to heart, and for the next podcast (that I'm in, anyway), I'll talk about some good games.

Look at my review list.  Those are all the games I've played in the last year.

Hmph!

Tell me to talk about good games?  I feel like I'm on the Sattelite of Love and Jonny is Dr. Forrester.

BOOURNS!

The Greg Hastings corpse needs more kicking. The ability to be funny is to be divine.

Keep up the good work.

I consider myself more of a Dr. McCoy character.  Or Dr. Strangelove, perhaps.

Are you just staying up late listening to old podcasts? That warms my heart. I stayed up late so I can deliver you a new one, so hopefully you're caught up by 5:30 Oregon time tomorrow (today).

I was bored last week so I listened to all the podcasts in a span of three days.  They're usually pretty good.

I tend to like the ones with Evan and Mike better just because they're most structured.  That, and Stan scares me.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Like Vudu, I have now officially listened to every episode (but the latest) of Radio Free Nintendo (for reasons completely unrelated to any contest. Is there even any contest? I haven't heard about any contest.)

Perhaps unlike Vudu, I enjoy pirate radio, because I think what you guys discuss tends to be interesting. And also because of Stan's evil laughter.

But (if I may offer some constructive criticism), it does feel like the show is slowly moving away from being Mike and Evan's. I'm fine with guests and guest hosts, but I think it may be a mistake to make the show too democratic. It might be interesting to experiment with, say, half the show being Mike and Evan, and half the show being a staff roundtable. And they could segue into the second half (even though neither one is PGC's official master of seguing) by saying "and now we turn to our panel of experts...." Yeah.

Oh, also, I think 40-50 minutes is almost always too long. Unless it's a very special occasion, like the one where you guys discussed the price. I remember thinking the apocolypse one in particular felt like it went on forever, though alot of interesting things were said.
