Okay, so, I've proven beyond a reasonable doubt that my client couldn't have committed the murder. And I've shown that the person on the witness stand is almost certainly the killer. Why, then, do I need to prove (s)he had a motive...especially when, before, the judge was about to declare my client guilty, even though Edgey-boy never so much as hinted at a motive?

Because the japanese justice system is so borked they don't end one case if the claim has been disproven and start a new case for other claims, no, they see the defense attorney as a cheap non-state-paid alternative to a prosecutor.

OTOH, in real life the japanese police does seem to have a tendency to arrest random people if they can't find the criminal just so they can markthe case closed. Combine that with a deep-rooted racism...

A friend of mine, while stationed in Japan, was almost arrested by the police for stealing a van because he had a red jacket.  That's all the description they had to go on: an American with a red jacket.  Luckily they didn't catch him off base, but he still got thoroughly grilled when he returned to base that day.

Same here, except replace 'a few weeks' with '2 days'.

Thankfully, he is back in my life now because I'm replaying the game to catch everything I missed (if you can spare the exclamation point, the response to 'there was no victim' in the third trial is hilarious.)
