God of War 2
« on: June 25, 2006, 09:04:48 AM »
Just saw the E3 feeds for God of War 2.  All the animations and everything I could think of a correlating God of War counterpart.  I hope they bring some new stuff to the table.  Actually the Wings don't have one.  Those are cool.  What's up with them and Minotaurs anyways.  The rock monster was a reskined armoured Mintotaur you faced in Hades area of the temple.

Edit:  Spoke to soon just saw the little mutant critters.

Hmm. I haven't played God of War, but just from watching the video, that looks pretty dull. Am I totally wrong? I guess I should just pick up the first at $20.

OMG. I just watched this video of God of War 2 Demo playthrough from E3 2006 and I am amazed.

Seriously, God of War 2 looks like it's doing everything quality. It's going to be absolutely HUGE! I mean, you've got your typical mass market third-person action game but...

Wow. The hard work that went into that demo is mind-boggling. Their animation is fluid, a dream that must've taken months of man hours to craft. They keep everything at a fast exciting pace, even opening chests doesn't slow you down as you simply shove it open and the health/magic it restores comes out on its own accord and groups to you so you can immediately start running around again.Their level design is linear even though the game is 3D, allowing for sweeping pre-determined camera angles that really bring the cinematic aspects of the game alive.

The level appears to have 3 or more actual MINI-BOSSES each of whom would have been a regular boss in any other game, and large enemies can trigger short button-sequence challenges that are corrdinated with beautifully animated kill-scenes, like climbing up large monsters, or ripping individual heads off of a cerberus type creature.

And oh my god, they implemented a great feature for block puzzles: powering up a powerful kick you can shove a "block" all the way across the room, removing much of the tedium of block puzzles and keeping everything so relentlessly cool. And then the levels is peppered with "moments of cool" like destroying important pieces of terrain (which sheen momentarily every once in a while to let you know that they are important) to form land bridges and whatnot.

The demo...was in a word... an immense achievement that can only be looked upon with awe and respect for the hard work and dedication that went into it.

This is seriously the first game I've ever seen that made me want to buy a PS2.

Huh?  You didn't see a bunch of those things already in God of War 1?

I've never even seen God of War 1, lol.

But seriously, God of War 1 or God of War 2 doesn't matter, these things put to shame so many other wannabe third person action titles out there. It's astounding, and very very scary at the same time to have to compete with that.

Well, we've been through 3 Devil May Crys, 2 Castlevanias, 2 Ninja Gaidens, and 2 (at the time) Princes of Persia.

Someone was bound to "get it right" (through and through) some time.

I played the first GoW and I really didn't care much for it. I feel that the only reason it is as popular as it is is because of all the violence and gore. The Story was nothing special and the game play was so-so.

Well, I haven't played the first one, but I couldn't at all draw those conclusions from watching the GoW 2 demo playthrough and from all the hubbub the first game created.

I liked the first one.  There was gore and Violence yes.  I though the story was nothing to write home about but took it's concept seriously.  I do hate that when you finally obtained a new weapon that you couldn't get new moves for it like the Blades of Choas.  But I thought God Of War was a masterpiece.  Everything sort of oozed of feeling and art.  That's why I'm disappointed that:

A) GoW2 looks like it's just a GoW Expansion
B) Sony didn't allow them the time to make something really special and put it on the PS3 so it could be just as incredible as the first one.  I didn't know that the PS2 could push graphics like that.  Makes me wonder what in the world Nintendo developers are doing.

And the three-way.  You forgot the three-way.
