Do you remember it? I do. I remember my foolish words at least, declaring my naive intention to buy the first AO rated game that was released. My reasons for this were, of course, academic. How could I hope to understand the videogame medium I study to enter without expanding my horizons?

Of course, upon being immediately linked to an obviously baseless game devoid of taste, I quickly amended my declaration to applying only to "serious" games.

In that, I felt safe. Then I read this.

Now, you may remember that I claim that my interest in this game to be "academic." Do not be alarmed that my intentions have changed at all. I consider Leisure Suit Larry: Magna C** laude a very serious purchase.

Firstly, I have always desired to investigate the Leisure Suit Larry series. It has always struck me as a game series that reeks of 80's game history and is of markedly different sensibilities than those concerns that prevail today. My purchase will gratify this purpose in this way, even though it is somewhat removed from the purer "original" games.

Secondly, I recently read another another Gamasutra interview with Al Lowe. Now, this wonderful man was not attached to this latest game in the franchise, it is true, which to me is a great tragedy. But to be even 2 degrees away from what he intended is a very exciting prospect to me. I am willing to put in the work to glean whatever I CAN from this item of entertainment media. But despite my assurances that I am not at all disappointed by this, there may still be some of you who doubt me.

Thirdly... which perhaps I should've mentioned first... is that this game was developed by High Voltage Games. I recently read a Gamasutra article where High Voltage Games talked about being an independent game developer and being hopeful that the Wii would succeed, even while being mindful that they couldn't do anything about it and were ultimately slaves to the Publishers who gave them work. At least from this, I developed a sense of respect for them, and in this sense I would like to examine this example of their work.

So, in conclusion... I'm declaring my intention to buy the AO version of Leisure Suit Larry for the reasons of investigation, curiousity, and respect. And of course, for honoring my pledge all those many posts ago.

After all... I've been watching a lot of Jane Austen movies recently. Hey... can anyone name the Austen story that I've referenced in this post?

Although morbid curiousity stirs me, I utterly REFUSE to inquire as to what a game entitled "Water Closet" must entail.

After all, it is not a matter of publication. It is a matter of respectable intentions, which I have laid out three reasons for supposing that LSL meets the requirements for.

Adult content works for films like evan's examples, because films are story-driven, but with games the story isnt important, so adult content usually looks very inmature or cartoonish. Some games are even intentionally made that way, like Larry games. Its really hard to make a "serious" adult game without ending up with one of those games that are more movies or books than actually games, like the (in)famous ero games from Japan.

Will, it may just be that videogames haven't yet matured to the point where we have the tools, technology and design-wise, to handle adult content.

We simply may be waiting for a videogame auteur to be discovered who can discover ways to utilize mature themes in game-design.

I'm not sure that Nintendo is interested in tackling "mature themes." Miyamoto treats games not as narrative mediums, but as experiences.

That's the only way to view games, in my opinion. Such a view doesn't necessitate a lack of mature themes.

Of course, if you want games that explore that kind of stuff, you'll have to look to another game designer....

I'll go in with Kairon on this little endeavor but with a twist. I'll buy the first AO rated game for Wii no matter how bad it is or who the target audience is unless it involves Children. Call it a sort of sick curiousity. While were on this does anyone know what happen with the rumor that producers where putting porn on UMD's for the PSP?

Im pretty sure that if it involves children it would be illegal in many countries with the exception of Japan and the US.

LSL1? No. LSL:MCM? Sure. For example, the above mentioned Singles was out before LSL:MCM. I don't know what exactly you mean with "distinguished pedigree" but "sold in regular stores in other countries" probably fits the definition.

I've heard of this great AO game. It's called Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

If you're interested in Leisure Suit Larry this new game is supposedly nothing like the "real" LSL. The old games would be a better example of why the franchise became popular in the first place.

LSL:MCM is a collection of minigames while LSL is IF (at least from what I understand).

GTA:SA doesn't really count since it was neither meant to be AO nor has any AO content.
