No multiplayer in Mario Galaxy
« on: June 06, 2006, 01:12:34 AM »
"One thing I've always wanted to do with the Mario games is alow for one player to play as Mario and for other players to join in. The way that the Wii Remote works, given that we can have up to four Wii Remotes using the player functionality simultaneously, it would allow one player to control Mario, with the other players using the Wii Remote to help him out or get in his way." - Miyamoto

I'm not sure what he is talking about exactly but I know he isn't saying there is a second playable character, there is no other brother Mario.

If you want to do something innovative, allow a friend to play the game with me cooperatively over the net.

Split screen mario would be arse.  Playing with a lagging, trash talking 12 year old luigi/yoshi/princess/wario/etc would also be arse, and hardly "innovative".
I think Nintendo has some interesting ideas of how to implement this pseudo-multiplayer scheme, and we ought to just wait and see before bitching and moaning about what's innovative or not.

...Luigi as a playable character would be nice.  A standalone Luigi's mansion followup would be nicer.

I want to be able to play a new Mario Bros (on a console) with my girlfriend.  I wantZ da two player; it's a freaking standard they set nearly twenty years ago and they have never expanded upon it (simultaneous online play as oppossed to taking turns or split screen).  I want cooperative platforming, example; seesaw-- high jump.

It is very simple you see, since they took away the multiplayer aspect the ladies nolonger find the games to be socially conductive.  And that is about it (and dual analog just doesn't work but the remote fixes that).

Um yeah, he has a brother.

But I think what he's talking about is maybe having one person control the little star pointer and have the other control Mario. Or maybe have the second player be able to control the enemies, counter-op style!

This post makes no sense?

He is saying exactly what Donutt007 said. What is so confusing about that?

It's not true multiplayer, it's an afterthought, there is no second playable character.

Part of the reason people still enjoy Mario Bros on the old systems is because it is two player, it is a social activity.  Would you play Streetfighter without a friend?  Or Halo?  Or Mario Kart?  Super Mario Bros was the first game I played with multiplayer.  What I want is to be able to play through a new Mario Bros with someone else. I would like to be able to enjoy discovering a new Mario Brothers adventure with a significant other. This is going to sound melodramatic but these old games, these characters, and eight bit sounds are a part of my childhood. They are the mountains I have climbed, the soundtracks of my imagination, the adventures of my youth; the demons I have conquered with big f***ing guns 9,000 times in all their pixelated glory. And I want to share it.

Miyamoto says he wants to end the image of the gamer sitting alone zombified in the glow of the TV in a dark room; I'd like to know what game he is refering to that will change that image.

What on earth does that have to do with Super Mario Galaxy? There's discussion of old games being reworked in another thread.

Super Mario Bros' two player mode was turn based. It was hardly thrilling. Just give the Wiimote to your girlfriend everytime you die in Mario Galaxy so she can have a go if you're so desperate to spend the night playing video games with her.

I see he said Super Mario Bros, but I think he meant Mario Bros. I'm assuming that is what he is talking about and I must agree. I think cooperative puzzles in a Mario World would be intense. Miyamoto's idea of cooperative control isn't as cool as it sounds. Take We Love Katamari for instance, 2 players controlling 1 Katamari = not fun. Nintendo is more creative than that, and I think Nemo's point is valid. There is no better universe to implement such a thing. You have Luigi and Mario and could easy have them working together to accomplish a goal. Of course it would be a lot of work on Nintendo's part but I don'tthink they want to miss the cooperative play bandwagon. Xbox Live is doing it like crazy and everybody loves it.

If only there was a Mario game with 2 players...

Mario Tennis
Mario Golf
Mario Kart
Mario Party
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Strikers
Mario Baseball
New SMB

...and many more!

Mario is and has always been a single player game. If you want a two player Mario paltformer, fine, but that has zip-de-do to do with MG.

Wait: someone is complaining that MG has no multiplayer? No, like, suggesting it be included or that it would be a nice idea (debatable in itself), but actually feeling ripped-off that it isn't in there?

I bet Zelda won't have multiplayer either.

Honestly though, while I would be fine with a multiplayer turn-based deal (Like SMB 3), I think Simul play would be a major pain. Maybe next generation when Nintendo goes HDTV, and the resolution can support crisp, smaller images, but for now I think they're making the right call.

Sounds there will be support for multiple cursors on screen.
That could be interesting. Good way for non-gamers to participate without having to deal with the complex controls of a 3D platformer.

As for Luigi and the traditional two player mode.
I don't see why the newer Mario games can't feature a two-player mode akin to that of the original games.
It was turn-based so all they'd need to do is create a Luigi model. Sure you can just take turns playing as Mario but it would be a nice feature.

Matt at IGN hinted that Luigi was a strong possibility in a blog or the mail bag, I forget.  Though if he is in the game, it will probably be just single player Luigi in place of Mario.

You know what's funny, is Nintendo KNOWS people want Luigi back.  They put him in New Super Mario Bros. as a bonus, and I remember Miyamoto saying that if you looked at the new Super Mario game, you'd think it was about Luigi instead of Mario. That was way back when people were still hoping for Super Mario 64 2, but obviously he knew people were disappointed that Luigi was missing from Super Mario 64.

I personally think two player cooperative Mario could be really cool.  I'd like to see a game that controls similar to Mario & Luigi if only one person is playing, but becomes full co-op if another player is added.  I think that would be more interesting than FLUDD or Super Mario Cursor.
That's my opinion, not yours.
