The final piece of the puzzle is coming together, it finally makes sense, the grand scheme of Wii is finally becoming clear to me.

The speaker in the controller. The new rumor that it has a microphone. Wii Connect 24, the system is always on. The controller will be used as a phone. Just be near a wireless connection and you have FREE calls anywhere in the world with fellow Wii owners. Nintendo are aiming even higher than I thought. The name Wii also would seem much more significant now.

The more they add to the controller the more I fear the price will go up to unafordable ammounts.

But hasn't it been stressed somewhere else that all the parts of the Wiimote are older technologies used in a new way? That should keep costs down. And even still, with Nintendo stressing affordable price there's no way they'd botch up and cause the controller to be $50 or something crazy like that.

I wonder if the controller will have to be a certain distance from the Wii console or if it can be used by itself? I'm picturing virtual aided hide and seek and pretend gun fights, where your remote beeps when it gets fired at by another remote. We wouldn't even need graphics at all! Maybe i'm getting too carried away here however... yes, I am.

The controller itself may be a bit more expensive than other controllers we've seen before... however the system should be cheap. The big thing i'd be concerned about is battery life... still waiting for an official word on that, but that's for another topic.

I have heard the phone idea before too, it's kind of neat. Personally I'm not crazy about WiiConnect 24, I don't like leaving electrical appliances on. I was trained from childhood to save the environment and cash by turning everything off when I'm not using it.

Well, MS has pushed accepted prices for controllers up to $40(wired) and $50(wireless), so I would think that this is the end of the $30 controller unfortunately. I'm budgeting for the $50, but hoping it's $40 instead.

And I'm not sure what to make of the microphone rumors. It seems logical, but I haven't adapted my ideas to it yet, AND Nintendo has insinuated that that would make the controller too complicated whereas a headset is likely more acceptable.... darn, can't find the link, but in an interview with Iwata the question was posed, after talking about the speaker, about why a microphone wasn't included and Iwata responded along those lines above I believe.

Neat idea, but I still think a headset would be better.

Given that the Wii uses bluetooth, a bluetooth headset is a very real possibility and it beats holding the Wiimote up to your ear mid game.

Uhmmm...there's no way the controller will be a microphone...and be used for phone communication. Why? Because we're dealing with Nintendo. It will be too cool of a move for Nintendo to make...

thats an extra thing for people to buy though. I already have a mobile phone and a land line. I'm not going to dish out for an optional headset jsut so the 3 other stooges who did the same might be able to call me up whenever for free.

I like Mario's idea much more and I hope it's true.

A revolution in online interactivity (at least in the game industry).

I'll give a hint for which 3 you should combine: combining all three turns the Wiimote into a videogame phone (VOIP).

Shiiiiiiiiit........I'll just tell you. Imagine your friend from across the globe is playing her Wii. After a few games, she wonders what your doing and if you want to play. She goes to her browser and under her account finds you (listed as her friend). She then "calls" you. At this point, with the help of your Wii continually being on, your Wiimote starts to vibrate and a audible chrip projects from the speaker. You pick up by pressing "A" and now (with the unannounced mic that is built in to the controller) you can talk to her and set up a game.

This has been dicussed before, but I think the idea itself could use a topic of discussion. Its an interesting idea, especially the way that Requiem puts it. Wii messenger voice chat could be usefull, and since it works off of a friends list, you don't have to worry about strangers or people you don't want to communicate/interact with.

I've been thinking about the friend codes and how they could potentially become your WiiPhone number.

If Nintendo figured out a way for you to automatically give out the new friend codes you register on your Wii to your friends, I doubt there would be such a fuss. Having one friend code would be great, but it's not possible with the current setup. So basically, once you get your new game, you plug the numbers into your profile, then it automatically sends it out to your friends and updates their profiles. You can also manage which friends get your new code and which don't. This will be useful just in case you make a friend in SSBB, but you don't want them to burn your Animal Crossing village. Or simply, if you don't trust your friend haha.

Hmmm....

If the WiiPhone is true, and if they somehow allow yout keep a profile that features the ability to auto-update friends code, it would rival Xbox Live.

You will only have to enter a friend code once. Then you can simply click on the friends name the next time and the call will be made (like Skype). Communication during online gaming would be great! But i do think a headset would be needed. To talk into the wiimote, and listen and play with it at the ame time.... i don't know

No, they said that the system would never turn off (unless you unplug it of course). The Wii is "The system that never sleeps." That way it is always connected to the WiiConnect24, whatever that turns out to be. CouchMonkey's concerns are valid, but I'm not worried about it. The Wii will only use up as much energy as a small light bulb when off.

Yes, but can the wii-mote make me coffee? Until it has that feature, and includes a kitchen sink, Nintendo has not gone far enough! For if the system runs 24 hours a day, it should enable the system owner to run 24 hours a day as well!

On a more realistic level, Nintendo would be hesitant to do this, because while it does let the older gamers (myself included) use VoIP, it also might give access to kids and then you're going to have CNN reporting that pedophiles are buying Wii's to stalk kids. It just goes downhill from there. Of course, no one will blame the parents who could probably lock out the feature, because no one ever blames the parents.

Can Nintendo turn the Wii into a VoIP phone? Yes. Will they? Eh, who knows.
