Third parties having trouble?
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:33:41 PM »
From the impressions I've read most of the first party titles sound great, a few need a little control tweaking, and maybe a little work on the graphics, but all in all sound like they'll meet Ninty level quality by launch.

Third party games on the other hand don't sound as far along, Red Steel for example seems to have sensitivity issues with the control and frame rate problems.

Likely this is more just an issue of getting used to the controller and hopefully it gets cleared up by launch, but its something to that could be a problem.

I've read raves about both Sonic and Madden... probably just depends on the developer.

When was the last time a Sonic game didn't need work on the controls?

I can understand why 3rd parties are having some trouble with the controller though. I mean, it's completely new tech. You're not just mapping buttons anymore. It's going to take a little while for developers to really get the hang of it.

To be honest, I'm a little surprised that some of them have been able to even get as far as they have already.

But as of yet there has really only been internal tester on the sensitivity.  So all these people demoing it at E3 should help.  If the developer does things right they could get a lot of invaluable information.  It also could be the case of hardware.  Most developers still don't have final dev-kits so this is probably one of the first times the game has been played on an honest to god wii with a near final controller.  Probably more sensitive then what they were use to with the older less refine package.  So I be more worried if these issues aren't on there way to being ironned out in say 3 months.

hopefully, after E3, there will be enough user feedback on the control and gameplay, that Nintendo and its third parties can make improvements and work out the glitches by the time it launches.

Joystiq is no longer worth reading. Their impressions are written by the net's biggest a-hole, James Ransom-Wiley, and they are oddly contradictory to every other website. I used to visit Joystiq several times a day. I refuse to visit anymore.

Yeah I have to agree with that, their madden impressions were totally different from IGN, gamespot, PGC and Ars Technica.

I think that the lack of polish on many of the titles simply has to do with the fact that the majority of third party developers, particualrly the western ones, have not had access to final or near final dev kits.  The IGN article on Red Steel claims that Ubi did not even recieve a dev kit until late march, and until then all development was done on a PC.  It would be likely that over the next few months, the gameplay and controls will be tightened up via internal testing and better graphical effects, textures, and polycounts will be layered in as the hardware improves.

I read PGC's impressions of Red Steel and that title is back on my launch list.  I also read Gamespot's impressions of it and that helped too.

I think some folks just aren't going to like it and some are anti-Nintendo like that guy reporting on Wii on the Joystiq site.

PGC has a great piece on Red Steel.  I think it all just takes a bit of getting used to the controls.  I use mouse on the pc, but when I first used it for fps games I sucked big time.  I was worse than when I used keyboard only.  But weeks later and I was better.  So while the controller make be fairly intuitive that doesn't mean you're an expert with it on day one.

So while I imagine Nintendo has had the most time with the controls and probably has the better more expertise in gaming development in general I think most criticism is because it's their first time using it.  I think even more so with hardcore gamers because they have to unlearn certain things.

I've been wanting Red Steel ever since those GameInformer pics hit the 'net. Seeing the game trailer makes this game my first official must-own Wii launch title. I showed a friend of mine the trailer last night (he's been anticipating the Wii solely for the Virtual Console feature). He absolutely loved the control set-up for Red Steel and said, "if I get one of these, the kids aren't going to be allowed to touch it". When I told him that the system will be cheaper than the XBox 360 and the PS3 he thought I was kidding. Apparently, the new controller technology makes the Wii seem like it should be more expensive. Perhaps, Nitendo can use this to their advantage and work the "perceived value" angle.

Also don't forget that most games have been developed basically with a Gamecube devkit and a Wii controller attachment, now that the hardware is finalized companies should be able to polish the games to make them look a little bit nicer.

Wow, that's a very interesting point. People could possibly percieve this a expensive simply buy the look and feel of the console. That is great because Nintendo could launch it at a low price and make it seem like a steal.
