Possibilities of the Remotes Speaker
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:18:58 PM »
Well, there have been some complaints about the speaker being one of the final secrets of the wii and I agree that technically it isn't a big thing but nevertheless I think it has potential.
For example.. imagine you are playing some sort of horror game (you remember this certain wii add with a guy and a girl using the controller like flashlights?).. the room is dark, perhaps you're playing in the late hours of the day.. and you're all alone in your living room. The game is kinda like project zero (which you should know if you like horror games) ... so you explore some eerie building or dungeon... the tension almost drives you mad as you know there most be *something* dangerous around here... launching itself at you at any moment.. and all of the sudden one of those japanese killer girl spirits starts whispering "I didn't want to kill..." and things like that.. and the sound is right next to you.. for it originates from your controller .. I think I would throw the thing as far away as I .. cursing the developers while at the same time thanking them for the good shock ^^.

Or another idea -> imagine you're playing a little girl in a dark eerie fantasy world (does anyone remember American Mc Gee's Alice?) and you have a teddy bear or something similiar as you companion and friend. The two of you have to get into that certain room over there, but theres that ugly guard... what to do??.. Distraction is the key =D you hide your teddy bear somewhere to lure the guard away from the door when you give him a signal.. this scenario would be even better if you assume there is some sort of dolby sound system connected to the wii... so you could put your remote some feet away from you, hear your teddy trying to get the attention of the guard and while you try to sneak in unseen you can hear the guard getting closer to your teddy/remote so you can estimate how long it will take him to come back...

I admit, these ideas might be a bit too complex but I hope you see that there are indeed some funny ways to incorporate the remotes speaker into gameplay. C&C welcome =)

"Hey! Listen! LISTEN!"

Right from your remote now.  You got to love fairies.

But serious if you can couple the speaker with the rumble it be neat feeling.  You could make the controller "Pulse".  Go from a high pitch to a lower pitch with the rumble gently turn on in the lower range and go up taking the place of the speaker then back to the top.  Very cool.

You made me just think of Silent Hill, where the radio emits static when a monster is near.  That would actually be a somewhat interesting aspect with the Wiimote =o

Too bad there haven't been any reports about such a feature being in TP yet =/ ... if there was also some sort of mic integrated into the remote you could even speak to your fairy, give it some simple commands and the like... is there a mic? I don't remember and I'm too lazy to look it up right now ^^

What do you mean?  In TP you hear your arrows being notched and fired through the controller, as well as you line when you go fishing.  And other stuff too, all out of the controller.

@KnowsNothing, I was referring to Ceric's comment.. being able to hear Link's fairy speaking to you through the wiimote and being able to answer her without sacrificing buttons would be fun :-) "Link Link, I want to show you someth.." -"Leave me alone already will ya? Nasty little..." ^^ ok, I doubt they would implement oice recognition that would go farther than translating some simple sentences but even this would be fun =D

Ceric: As soon as I read the first line of your post ("Hey! Listen! LISTEN!"), I automatically thought "Shut up, Navi."

Shinosuke: Technically, speakers and mics are the same thing, but there has been no announcement about using the Wii controller as a mic. It would be nice for voice chat in online games.

After E3:

Iwata:  You know I don't think that contoller does enough.
Miyamoto *looking at open Wiimote*:  Your right.  I can still see a few centimeters of space.
Iwata:  If we add some contacts with this little speck of space here and a resistor... pentiometer... there I have it!
Iwata:  Introducing the newest feature heat response and electroshock.
Miyamoto:  Brilliant.  Soon there will be no more "Chair to Keyboard Error."
Iwata: Yes Universe very soon the programmers will win.
<insert insync maniacal laughing>
Sony *looks up*: You know my ears are burning...

and thus the new feature and charger contacts where born.  In other news the Wii will be able to call 911 when it feels the player has had an accident.

I think this is a great idea. People pay huge amounts of money for surround sound systems and this is even more emersive then hearing sounds around you.  I feel will generate a lot "awesome" moments in games besides breaking down that extra wall.
