Bob Ross Inc. has announced in March 2006 that they have filed a letter of intent to license to Joseph Hatcher's AGFRAG Entertainment Group to develop exclusively worldwide video/computer games based on Bob Ross' creative, unique and easy to learn painting techniques and TV show properties.

The Bob Ross video game, currently untitled, is planned to be developed for PC, the Nintendo DS handheld & on Nintendo's next-gen system coming later this year, code named Revolution. Release date was not announced. AGFRAG is currently seeking a publisher.

AGFRAG's Director of Development, Joseph Hatcher, has this to say about the announcement:

"I grew up watching Bob Ross on PBS and was always in awe of how quickly and smoothly he made these beautiful paintings, which helped inspire my creativity. There are generations that know Bob Ross and his painting techniques, and I want to share his talent with future generations in a new medium.

The Bob Ross game will utilize the unique inputs that the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Revolution have that can truly immerse the players while they learn to paint like Bob Ross and can play the addictive and fun games that we have planned for the title. I believe that Bob Ross Inc's and AGFRAG Entertainment Group's similar beliefs in independence, creativity, and teaching others will benefit how the game is developed and how the players of all ages will be able to enjoy this game.

I want the community to share with us their favorite Bob Ross shows, painting techniques, and what they’d like to see in the NDS and Revolution games. We want to keep the brush going."

Killer ap ahoy it looks like, PS3 pretty much better close the doors before they are even open as 2007 will be marked as the year when the world collectively fired up their Revolutions to learn to paint like Bob Ross... :P

I've seen your trees Arbok.  They're not happy trees.  You need to get this game so you can paint those happy trees.

I know someone's going to quote it, so it might as well be me.

All right, we are going to use a fan brush here and uh why don't you take some hunter green and we are going to put a happy little bush right down over here in the corner there and that'll just be our little secret and if you tell anyone that that bush is there I will come to your house and I will cut you.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Uh...does the Revo have HD support?  I need to see happy trees in HD.  I'm sorry this is sad...you want to paint?  Go and get some watercolors and a canvas.

Wow.  This sounds so much like an April Fool gag that it's unbearable, but bobross.com appears to be legitimate, unless it was hacked.  I'm still suspicious.

It seems to me this game would require actually painting skills in order to be any good at it.  So if you're good at painting why not just paint for real?

It's a creative idea but I sure as hell wouldn't buy it.

I still can't help but be skeptical, and I've read the confirmation that Jonny got before posting the article.... it's just too strange.

All I can say is "Wow". This is exactly the sort of thing Nintendo was aiming for with the new direction they're trying to take gaming.

As much as all of you are joking about this game.  I seriously think this will be an awesome game.

Just think for a second.  It's a painting game, that with the Revolution controller you can actually paint with "true" preasure allowing very deep and complex paint design.

Also since the Revolution supports SD Cards you can save your paintings and print them out on your computer or take to KINKOS and print professional quality creations.

Bob Ross can just be used for a tutorial on how to paint.

iansane painting is easier than people think, mosto fthe time people think they need to be an artist to be a great painter, really you simply have to have a brush, a canvas, and some paint

Tell that to Mario Paint.

Yeah, I did a whois query, too.  I also tracked down AGFRAG's site, and read the announcement there.  Joseph Hatcher is listed on Moby Games, too.  I just have difficulty believing anything I read this time of year.

If it is real, it's a good idea.

"I forgot to mention in resoinse to whynot just buy canvacas and paints, cuz tehy are a lot more expensive thana video game. Beleive me painting is a seriously expensive hobby."

Fair enough.  I'm just pointing out that there's no fantasy element here like with most games.  A lot of people say "why don't you just play football?" in regards to Madden.  The obvious response is that most people aren't good enough to play on an NFL team in real life.  Madden's a fantasy because you don't have to be good at football to play it.  But here it's like you have to be good at painting to be good at this game.  It's not a fantasy.  It's just another way to enjoy an activity you already are familiar with.

This is something I've been a little worried about regarding motion control if it's done really accurately.  A golf game that responded realistically to how you swing would be a good way for a golfer to play without paying to go out to a real course.  But it would be totally useless for the "I suck at golf but want to play a videogame where I'm a golf pro" crowd.  Now painting is different than a sport but there's still concern.  If a game has motion control that is too subtle and too realistic then a game no longer becomes a fantasy but a simulator that requires real skill.  One advantage of a button press is that it's so easy to do you can suck at something in real life and pull it off effortlessly in a game.

Ah, the Bear speaks "webhosting".

Yeah, it's an excellent idea. It worked with Mario Paint and with Bob Ross' name behind it, it'll have the credibility it needs to sell Revs to people who wouldn't DREAM of touching gaming.

And yeah, painting is monstrously expensive. I might buy this and give it a try...

Not to mention all the chemicals you end up using to do it and the ventilation your space better have if you don't wanna pass out on the floor.  This game will be TONS more user friendly just on that account alone.

From a serious point of view, I actually assume the main pull of this, if done right, would be a way for painters to easily correct mistakes (Undo, Erase). Still be interesting to see how this all develops.
