Component cable vs. VGA cable (Gamecube)
« on: March 17, 2006, 12:22:55 PM »
Hey all,

Just picked up an LCD tv this morning (found a great deal), and it has both inputs for component and VGA cables.  I'm sort of a cable/accessory junkslut (junkslut TM of Penny-Arcade), so I've got both such cables available for my GC.  Question then, is which one would produce the best picture quality?  I keep thinking it will be the HD cable purely because I don't know if VGA cables can produce the same progressive scan output.

Anyway, if anyone knows (I'm asking on various sites), please let me know!  Thanks!

Component:  They're official.

There are no official VGA GameCube cables, so it sounds like you either bought a VGA adapter, or a hacked Component Cable.  Either way, VGA method is progressive-scan only, and it doesn't guarantee you'll get decent output for all games (nor does it guarantee you'll get ANY output for non-p.scan games).

The picture you get from a TV running in p.scan is essentially just like a VGA monitor, in that you're getting solid progressive frames and good pixel clarity.  But GameCube games are designed to run on TVs, not VGA monitors.

And don't use the term "HD" when referring to component cables.  They're not the same.

Personally having every way possible to hook up a Cube.  He's right component is official and it looks the best.
