This is different enough than the rumor thread, so I thought I'd start a new one.

How many times have we heard the promise of a simultaneous worldwide launch from every console maker? (answer: a LOT)

It was absolutely not just a BRD issue. There are virtually no games finished to launch with, even if they did launch in Spring. There would be a couple titles, but then the system would be dead for 6 months while developers caught up. How the heck would developers finish games without final dev kits?

BRD is part of it, but they didn't evolve game development any faster either. If the BRD issues were resolved tomorrow, they still couldn't do Spring because the dev kits wouldn't allow it to happen.

Anyway, I'm skeptical. They would love to do a worldwide launch. I think there will be territorial delays by a few weeks. Sorry Europe.

I'm not confident in their "2 million" for launch figure, and I think we'll see a shortage through the holiday.

The cue to Nintendo in all of this is simple... Expect "something" from Sony in November. Expect Halo 3 from MS. Since Revolution is easier to make, ramp up production and outdo Sony in volume. They will sell through if they make them. I mean, it's only the launch window and Sony will catch up, but I think they can be as aggressive as they were with the DS launch and it'd pay off.

I don't know how Sony is going to pull this off when PS3 production isn't even going to start till some time in June.

Also the price for the "basic" PS3 was announced and its going to be $425. We don't know what a "Basic" PS3, people are assuming its going to be like the Xbox360 Core. But its going to be priced higher then the Xbox360 Premium. Rumor going around is that the "Basic" PS3 won't have Blu-Ray Video playback and no built in HDD (which Sony is saying is going to be required.)

I Don't know what Sony is thinking.

I find it hard to believe that the basic won't have a built in HDD, when on their HDD slide from todays press conference it says, in all caps, "REQUIRED"...

If the HDD is required they sure as hell better include it.

The 60 GB HDD is official and in every system. Where is this "basic" price announcement and stuff? I haven't seen that anywhere from any news source. Nobody's reporting that.

Yeah, that why I questioned it. They're the only folks mentioning it. It's a very considerable omission if it was actually announced.

Agreed... Next gen won't be as one-sided as this generation. Anybody can take this one if they don't screw up.

The PSP had a Core and Value Pack package available, the Core was just the system, the Value Pack had additional stuff. I'm expecting the Basic PS3 to be similar, console, controller, power and video cables, that's it.

I expect that price to go down quite a bit before launch, remember Saturn vs. PS1?

I don't like that at all. This PS3 thing is just getting out of hand. I think Sony decided to make the UBER-SYSTEM, but I really feel it is going to be too expensive and have too many functions to it to be successful.

Its just like what Sony is pushing with the PSP. It is moving it further and further away from gaming with its new added features, and some of the features are just stupid. PSone downloads? why bother.

I think ideally if you include a hard drive there should be limits on how much space each game can use for permanent storage. Everything stored should be able to be moved to a memory card so that you can remove items from your hard drive without losing them. And there should be protected space specifically for temporary storage that occurs while you're playing but doesn't stay. I forget the term but some Xbox devs used it to speed up load times. Considing the expense of a hard drive and how it likely can't be replaced you can't just allow devs to do whatever they want or they'll make bloatware.

You can never have too much space, a 60GB HDD is not really more expensive than a 20GB HDD, Sony is alledgedly planning a download service for PS1 and PS2 games, could be used to hold music or video files, etc.

The term you're thinking of is "swap space".

It sounds like Sony believes they can replace the PC, which is so idiotic there are no words for it.

More and more, it sounds like the PS3 is going to be a giant, bloated disaster.

Dammit, which one?!

Having recently watched a few Ducktails episodes, I noticed there were quite a few adult jokes hidden in the otherwise innocuous children's show. Such as a beagle boy saying "It'll be good to be number one. I'm sick of being treated like number two." and how "Launchpad's joyrider only goes up and down." Rescue Rangers has similar innuendo.

Now I want to watch more of them to see if I catch more jokes which I missed when I was a kid...

I think its crazy for SONY to be offering a download service to download ps1 and ps2 games. Even with broadband its still going to take a long time to get a 700mb ps1 game not to mention a 4.7gb ps2 game.

This is where nintendo is at an advantage as it would literally only take seconds to download NES and SNES games and minutes for N64 games.

A few other factors that could also limit people's usage of SONY's download service for ps1 and ps2 games:
- Anyone with a 56k connection.
- Most highspeed internet connection plans here in Australia have download limits (i'll make the assumption that many other ISP's around the world do the same thing).
- Countries like Australia have slower highspeed internet due to their infrastructure unlike some other countries.
- There is no pick up and play per se. If im in the mood to play Super Mario Bros 3 for example I will be able to download it straight away pretty much and start playing. But if im in the mood to play final fantasy 7 I may have to wait a couple of hours and then I might no longer be in the mood to play it.
- The percentage of PS3 owners that will have a broadband connection

Ok I think its great that SONY is willing to offer this service to its fans but overall i just don't think at this point in time it is really feasible.
