I don't fancy the box art or the title, but such pissy trivial things don't matter with an event such as this. Unless you're an idiot. =D

Yeah the title doesn't bother me at all. Its meh.

But the average consumer will probably think its the eleventh remake of NES Super Mario Bros.

While Super Mario World was titled as Super Mario World, it was still really Super Mario Bros. 4, unless you want to take into account the two completely different Super Mario Bros. 2 games, then Super Mario World would actually be just Super Mario World and then Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was the start of a new psuedo-series that ended with Yoshi's Story, (and the first trilogy would be sort of like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and be more than 3) and then the new series was realized in 3D as Super Mario 64, and if you don't know what you are thinking, as your brain has just gone and blown up, you want to know where the other 61 Mario games are as it went from Super Mario Bros. 3 to Super Mario 64, and then you have to take into count the lack of the word Bros. from the title and you have to wonder, further, where the Hell Luigi is and why he wasn't in the game, and you are left with a whole mess that is about as equal in confusion as the whole timeline for the Legend of Zelda series is.

is Super Mario World "Super Mario Bros. 4" or is it a while new trilogy for Mario that ended on the N64 and Super Mario 64 another trilogy that is more or less not finished unless you want to include Super Mario 64 DS, then which in fact the trilogy is complete and the New Super Mario Bros. and the when-ever-the-hell-it-comes-out Super Mario Bros. 128 (?) being the first games in possibly two new trilogy's.

something to think about

I guess you could go with the Super Mario Land series number conventions too since it is a handheld system. Of course those already had legitimate successors, the Warioland series.

I completely forgot about that, there are two series really, since Super Mario Land 3, was basically the starting point of the Wario Land series.

I've always thought of Mario has having two platformer series.

The first would be Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 1-3, Super Mario World 1-2, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine.  I would consider both versions of Super Mario Bros 2 in this series since they're grouped together as such in Super Mario All-Stars.  Super Mario Bros 2 has pretty much been accepted as a real Mario game after all these years anyway.

The second would be the Super Mario Land games.  I consider them different not just because they're on the Gameboy but because they're not made by Miyamoto or EAD.  I think they were made by Intelligent Systems (or R&D1 which is kind of the same team but not really).  This became the Warioland series.

Yoshi's Story I consider an offshoot like Luigi's Mansion or Super Princess Peach though my reasons for that is probably more that it's just not very good than anything else.

I consider Mario vs Donkey Kong part of the Donkey Kong series which also consists of the three DK arcade games and DK '94.  The Rare Donkey Kongs are a different series altogether.  Jungle Beat is the start of a new DK series.

I'm not sure where New Super Mario Bros fits in.  Typically Nintendo's 2D and 3D versions of games are seperated in different series but if this is made by EAD and it features Mario as the staring character and it's clearly a platformer so it could be part of the main series.  It'll probably be best to wait and see in case Nintendo starts a whole series of "New Super Mario Bros" games or maybe just a series of "New" games period with other Nintendo franchises given the same treatment.

You forgot the Mario RPGs too...

I wonder what Nintendo considers canon to the series... I'd considered stuff like Luigi's Mansion, Mario Is Missing!, etc to be more Mario Gaidens.

Good question.

How the f-bomb are they going to explain THIS one?

"You forgot the Mario RPGs too..."

And Mario Kart and Mario Party and the various Mario sports games and even then Tennis and Golf have sequels and thus could be considered their own series.  Anyway I was talking about the platformer games.

The Mario RPG series though is hard to seperate as originally it was like one series but now both Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi have direct sequels so we basically have three Mario RPG series with the first game being a one-shot title.  Each series is made by a different dev after all and each has their own battle system.

"I wonder what Nintendo considers canon to the series"

Nintendo very blatantly just makes things up as they go and doesn't pay attention to continuity or consistency.  Hell the whole thing was totally screwed up when they turned Doki Doki Panic into a Mario title and then later put characters like Shyguy that are originally Doki Doki Panic characters into original Mario titles.  This is a company that when asked why they're called the "Mario brothers" despite Mario being one guy's first name said that Mario's full name is Mario Mario which is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.  With Nintendo it's probably safe to say nothing is canon because they just do whatever they want.  The best we can hope for is that an individual game maintains it's own consistency within itself.

The title of the game is stupid regardless of how you interpret the word "New" as it is used in the title. That's my take. But titles are meaningless. Great games have terrible titles all the time. So as far as I'm concerned so long as the game is fun and delivers a truly "Marioesque" experience I'll be very, very satisfied. I too have been waiting for this game for a long, long time. So I don't want to let the name throw me.

Mario doesn't have a story.  It NEVER did.
Why would anyone think it needed to be consistent.

Because the RPGs are very story-heavy.

Mario games do have a story, mainly a back story.  Aside from the RPG Mario games, the story is laid out usually in the instruction manual, or in the case of say Super Mario Bros 3. you are made to think the game is going in a certain direction only to have it go in another direction.  You think the Princess is safe, but out of nowhere, Bowser kidnaps her and changes the plot.

To just outright say the Mario games have no story whatso ever is a diservice to the games themselves, just because the story isn't a constant in your face even doesn't mean there is no story.

Well obviously the individual games have some modicum of story in them.  Even the first is about save the princess from Koopa.  But I can't recall even a vague connection between any of the games.  Even the RPGs, which are relatively story-driven, have few connections between them.  Very little connects Paper Mario 1 and 2.  Each game is almost entirely independant.
That's what I meant.  As Bill said, no timeline.

Carmack once said the story to a game is like the story to a porn flick: It's there because it's expected to be there but noone cares about it, they just want to play/wank. I think Miyamoto has a similar oppinion, to him a setting is a tool that is used to complement a gameplay. He's an engineer and he engineers the settings to work with one particular gameplay he has in mind. Of course that becomes a problem when the corporation says "We liked that setting you made there, make more of it for Us!". The setting is only a vessel for the gameplay so it's not meant to be expanded upon, it's an extra. What really receives the sequel is the gameplay.

They need to team Miyamoto and Kojima up and see what they create.

I'd have to buy it from curiosity alone.
