I wonder if you guys would be acting so stongly if this game wasn't called bomberman? Ok I understand your disappointment that they have basically ripped this IP right down to its core. None of us have played it yet and could potentially be a great game. This kind of reminds me of a milder version of the whole Wind Waker scandal.

Obviously hudson wants to market bomberman to a different demographic and doing so has had to make some controversial changes to bomberman. But fear not because if this game is not well received then watch Hudson pull a Nintendo and go back to its roots with this game.

The problem, well at least my problem with it, is that it is fundamentally insulting to bomberman fans and game fans in general...

I mean, in all seriousness, why couldn't the game be the normal bomberman character design, but with enhanced xbox live multiplayer, etc. I think it would still be a killer app. Instead we get this, which is basically them saying that their fans are too stupid and self concious to play a game like bomberman so 'we have to make it hardcore.' 'Furthermore, we better add a first-person view because thats what all the hardcore gamers truly want!'

It's not so much that they did it, but more their intentions behind it.

Yep, Hudson decides they need a new approach for Bomberman so they turn him into t3h mayture, Capcom sees a need for a change in direction and makes Megaman even cuter than before and that's still nothing against the new Roll. Capcom, the company known for games like Devil May Cry and Resident Evil, as compoared to Hudson whose flagship product seems to be Mario Party these days. So I suppose if you don't have t3h mayture you want it but if you had it you see that really, chibi has more style.

The only reason they've been doing that to original Megaman is to separate it from the X series. This looks to be phase 3 in changing up Megaman.

Looking at that Mega Man pic and the new Bomberman look I've noticed something in common with the two series: they both have "man" in the title.

I've also noticed something else. Both series were once incredibly popular but have been rehashed and milked to the point where they're totally unessential now. From a creative standpoint they're finished and the only reason to continue with them is for a quick buck. The redesign is obviously to rekindle interest in something that's been stale for years. So maybe they should just stop making so many sequels and make some new stuff. Hudson in particular has got like nothing right now. They make Bomberman and Mario Party and both series are DONE. Actually they're overdone. They're like lumps of coal.

If the Xbox fanbase doesn't want Bomberman then don't waste time and effort giving them something they don't want. Make something new and interesting. Hudson should make some sort of ultimate Bomberman game with online play for the Rev and PS3 so that everyone can play 10 player online Bomberman and then call it a day.

And if you squeeze those lumps of coal hard enough you get a diamond. Mario Party may not be big to you Ian, and I agree that it's been overdone in its short existance, but it sells like crazy in Japan. Do not underestimate the power of the Rising Sun. And would you rather them not translate it for American audiences so we miss out on another good game? (Sin and Punishment comes to mind)

This relates to ruining franchises for no reason so I think it fits here. The new Final Fight game is out. It's getting creamed in reviews. It's getting scores like 3.3 out of 10, the sort of scores so low that it's pretty much considered a fact that the game sucks. Why did they make that a Final Fight game? No one who likes Final Fight will like it because all the elements that made Final Fight good have been stripped out. The people who may like this game don't know what Final Fight is and probably wouldn't like the real Final Fight anyway. So the name has no selling power to the target market. The only reason to call the game "Final Fight" is to trick people into buying it. But that's just going to hurt the brand and piss off your customers.

So if this Bomberman game is specifically designed for people who don't like Bomberman then it makes no sense to have the Bomberman name on it because it has no selling power for the people the game is for and people who do like Bomberman won't like this game.

Seems to me that a franchise's speed of evolution is inversely proportional to the level of development of the first game.

Metroid was very simple and underdeveloped when it came out (with frustrating gameplay flaws and a severe lack of items), its sequels made massive improvements and eventually netted us the best game on the Gamecube.
Zelda was mostly already developed but still lacked some things that made later Zelda games great (like proper puzzles and some items). Second best game on the GC.
Bomberman was already Bomberman when the first game was released, all subsequent changes were pretty minor and to this day the formula hasn't changed much.
Megaman, same story. Megaman 1 was developed very far, included many mechanics and would pretty much hold up today. Not much development thereafter.

So imagine what an E.T. game would be like today

That makes a lot of sense though I think that also combines with the rate sequels are released. Mega Man had six games on the NES so it got burnt out fast. There were five Super Bomberman games released in Japan. On the Turbo Graffix 16 Bomberman games were annual like Madden (Bomberman '93 for example). Metroid would probably not be as essential today if Nintendo released annual sequels for it.

Though Bomberman and Mega Man are two games that need little refinement after the first game. Combining that with rapid fire sequels is pretty brutal. I guess the moral of the story is if you nail it the first time wait a few years between sequels. Super Mario Kart nailed the formula pretty well but Nintendo has managed to make the series last longer by only offering one game per generation.

Though the two might be related. It's easy to release rapid fire sequels when your game is pretty much already perfect as is and you just have to make up new levels. With something like Metroid the natural desire to improve on an imperfect formula is going to force longer development time between sequels and likely a wait for better hardware. I have noticed that Nintendo has been much more frequent with the sequels in situations where the formula has become fine tuned.

I like to call rapid fire sequels expansion packs. Often times they are just re-hashes. Sometimes they work, most of the time the don't. Unfortunately, I can't think of any developer (except maybe Treasure) who doesn't get caught up in sequelitis

EA: Need for Speed, Madden
Ubisoft: Splinter Cell
THQ: WWE wrestling
Namco: Tekken
Sega: Sonic
Activision: Tony Hawk
Rockstar: GTA is on the verge of it.
Nintendo: Mario Party
Koei: They are the kings of the rehash sequels with their Dynasty Warriors.

EA should have everything under their list. If it's successful EA milks it until it dies. Practically every series they have is on an annual release schedule. Remember when a new Burnout game was actually significant game news?

Konami is not on your list and thinking about it they're not that bad. But there's DDR.

Actually, they're up to the 11th game now. I'm one of the millions of players who play the game. Romance of The 3 Kingdoms is based on an extremely popular novel in China; guess where this game gets all it's sales from?
