PS3 getting live-like online service
« on: February 02, 2006, 11:41:23 PM »

Much as I hate to hope that others screw up....I hope Sony screws up.

This is actually a pretty big deal, because Nintendo has suddenly gone from one viable, if overly-expensive, competitor in the online field to 2. As much as a like MK online, the rev's free online service had better be more robust. As in, there needs to be voice chat in all online games. And a universal friends list. At least.

I have a feeling that Sony will just dictate developers some terms and hope they make that online service for them.

Personally, I'm not keen on paying for online gaming, so Nintendo automatically wins for me.  Having said that, I agree that Nintendo's service needs more development.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I think Nintendo gains a huge advantage by having the most flexible online model.  The big draw being that it's free.  Of course often you get what you pay for but I think it's a fair tradeoff.  The DS online service has managed to be pretty successful so far.  I think people have wanted to play Nintendo games like Mario Kart online above all else and that alone is a big draw.

Plus this gives their online service more universal appeal.  Xbox Live is popular but it's mostly a hardcore gamers thing.  Anyone who buys an Xbox to play the odd game every once in a while doesn't get Xbox Live.  There's no way to justify the cost if you don't use it frequently.  But with Nintendo's model you can buy one game, enjoy it online, not buy any games for months, and then go back online with no problems or extra cost.  Plus Sony is making it so that they and Xbox Live are in competition.  If I own both consoles and I'm low on funds one of the online services is getting the axe.  But it will never be Nintendo's because at the very least the first party titles will have free online.  There would never be a reason to pick one of the other online services over Nintendo's because of costs.  No matter what your funds are as long as you still have internet you're still online in some capability on the Rev.

Nintendo better promote the f*ck out of this.

This is great.... for Nintendo
Microsoft loose millions from live, Sony could stand to loose 10times the ammount that microsoft looses now, if it is as popular as ps2
With sony profits down, you think they would think wisely on features that MAKE profit

...as opposed to Nintendo, who is offering their service for free?

Oh, and Ian, you're actually defending one of Nintendo's decisions? Hooray!

I suppose.

Keep in mind, though, we don't really know what Sony is going to do with it's service. It might go through a centralized server, it might not. It might be free to the consumer, it might not.

That is pretty interesting that above all else, Sony wants online gaming according to these developers.  This is reminding me of the cold war.

Nintendo's service in my opinion wont lack because its free. Nintendo just have a very differnt buisness model for funding their online play. Now this is pure speculation on my part but, I believe virtual consol has been set up specifically to fund nintendos online service. Charging for a product that needs no further development creates free profit. This profit gets thrown back into the service and the service stays afloat. People like it because they are paying for a product and get a free service out of it.

I think its pretty unlikely Sony is going to have a 'Live' like services. Didn't Sony bash 'Live' a few months back and said they were going to stick with the way they are currently set up?

Right now I'm more then willing to bet that Sony is feeling the pressure of the Xbox360 & the Revolution and are coming to terms with the fact that the PS3 will Not be able to do everything they said it will and will be on par with the Xbox360 and not Light years ahead of it like they were saying. With the lack of info and playable demos and the recent surge of negative hands on reviews its not looking good for Sony and I think they coming out and saying they are going to have a 'Live' like services that is far better then 'Live' is them just putting up more smoke and mirrors to keep their users distracted and in their pocket.

Yeah, Sony is king when it comes to making promises they never keep.

Take their claims and estimate that they'll get about 50% of what they offer (maybe), which means you can expect a service which tries to be like live but winds up sucking and would have been better off under Nintendo's "friend" model.

Bump!

Sony has confirmed plans for an online service. Link 1, link 2, link 3

It will feature:

- tiered access model with free basic services and not-free premium services.

- the ability to purchase/download games. As well as movies, music, tv shows and other content.

- social networking.

-the ability to voice chat with other people... as well as send messages, check email, look at friends lists, etc, via pop-up translucent hud IN GAME.

- support for third party servers (Unlike LIVE)

...this is, scarily, quite impressive. Say what you will about the ps3, at this point it looks like Sony is pulling out all the stops. If Sony pulls through on it's promises (as always a big if with them), I may wind up picking up a ps3 as a second console. Once it drops in price, of course.

This is probably Sony Online Entertainment's job, if so ten bucks say it won't have at least 50% of the promised features at launch and the rest will randomly crash your console.

What the hell does that mean?  Is it like Live's Silver package (free basic services do not include playing games) vs Gold package?

I've been looking into that. I'm not sure if anybody knows. Here's a quote from gamasutra

Quote

"We will provide all the basic services as standard," Harrison continued. "But third party game services can also be connected, so this means that developers and publishers of MMO-type games can integrate with our platform."

It sounds like basic services like matchmaking will be free...but it's hard to tell. They might be planning on charging you a one-time fee to download and add online functionality to a game, for example.

By-the-by, here's a photo of the in-game video chat:

In-game video chat is the worst thing that could ever happen to online gaming. Do you want to see wangs (in real-time) looking at you while you're playing MechAssault?

Everything Sony promises sounds impressive, but to date, I don't think they've ever once delivered anything as impressive as they've promised.

The PS2 promised graphics which would rival Pixar's animation...WRONG.

The PSP promised to be the portable to end all portables and actually have some games...WRONG.

The PS3 promises to be superior to other consoles in every way...take your best guess.

They're trying to be everything to everyone, and every company or device which has tried to do that in the past has always wound up being nothing to nobody.

Given that we're talking about SOE I'd say they haven't even delivered anything that even half-assedly did more than half of what they promised.

$20 its going to be crap and half the stuff they said its going to have it won't. It will most likely cost the same as XboxLive or more. If it costs the same I'm more then willing to bet MS will drop their price. Also they say "support for third party servers (Unlike LIVE)" Ah.. MS has been changing this. Example Final Fantasy XI for the Xbox360 is running on Square's servers not MS's.

Also I would like to go on the record that in-game video chat is the most retarded idea since.... Damn I can't think of anything more retarded. You should be focused on the game not looking at what the other players are doing. Might work nice in a Poker game or maybe a party game but thats it.
