Nice article. Im in agreement for the most part. Its nice to see that others are of the mind, like me, that Nintendo needs to focus or at least take heed of the American market. Hopefully nintendo opens its eyes a little next gen.

Well I was going to say the same thing about American games.  There's a billion fps retread games out there.  Same with rts.  There's the same version of Madden every year with new features that very few people use.

.................

I think the same problem will happen here in America.  Americans will get tired of playing their franchises over and over especially for $50 a pop.  I mean how many Tony Hawk games have their been?  There were 3 GTAs this past generation.  A couple Halos. And  I just played too many pc fps shooters to find Halo all that exciting.

So really that's why I'm interested in the 'Cube.  I haven't played too much Nintendo games.

Anyway the good point the article raises is the different markets have different tastes.  I don't think Nintendo aims any of its games at the American Market.  Maybe maybe Metroid Prime.  But that's it.

I think Nintendo should take a shot at making a few titles aimed at the stereotypical 15-25 yr old male videogame market.  Geist was sort of that game.  But they didn't back it with production values.  Or Nintendo should do like EA does and buy out companies that come up with the next big ftitle.

Ah well I guess every company has its own style of making games.

ONe thing American titles have that Japanese titles seem to lack is options and features.  Now American titles maybe have  too many features that hardly anyone uses, but your biggest fans appreciate them and even casual fans like the idea of using them even if they don't.

If you look at Nintendo titles they really lack in the options.  They go completely the other direction.  There's some exceptions.  SSMB is a sort of exception.  Maybe that's why it sold so well here.

MarioKartD really lacks with the options.  I love the game.  IT's fun.  But  couldn't they throw in a lot more options into the game?  OPtions to tweak your cars.  Build your own tracks.  More battle tracks. Tweaks to your cars.  Handicap difficulties.   .....American games want that crap in there.  I'm not saying I do, but it seems like an American thing.

Another thing is Americans don't care if a game is as polished as much as the Japanese (or the Japanese developes) care.  One reason I love Nintendo games is they usually are super smooth.  But most Americans don't care much about this.  IT's the graphics man.  And for the 13-25 year old videogame market it's shock value.  You want what you're not supposed to have.  It's the same with music and movies.

Also Americans don't like cute.  IN Japan middle aged men do cartoons or anime or manga whatever they call it.  Not in America.  Look at the games that sell IN America.  It's sports titles and star wars and GTA/Halo stuff.  One reason the PS stole Nintendo's business is because they put the darker stuff out there.

Americans also don't tend to like weird.  None of the games that sell here are weird generally speaking.  Macho stuff sells.

Anyway I'm talking about the core 15-25 male videogame market.

Nintendo has shown recently they can be successful selling to other parts of the market with a few of their DS titles.  And games like Sims and Myst show games not aimed at that stereotypical videogamer demographic can sell extremely well.

I think Nintendo realizes the Japs are in a slump, but they don't think America will be any different.  They think we'll get tired of our games too.  And hence the reason for the controller and for some new types of games.  Here's wishing them luck.

Also Americans don't like cute.

A-hem! ^_^

And I totally beg to differ...I consider Animal Crossing and Nintendogs "cute" games, and they have sold a crapload here so far...And I know quite a few people that extend into this "core" 15-25 male fanbase...

Indeed. Everyone loves cute. Didn't they just do a study where they found cute things activated the same parts of the brain that sex and drugs do?

I thought Miyamoto was hinting at a new FPS franchise comming out on Rev?? (Maybe he was just refering to Metroid Prime 3)

Anyway it looks as if Nintendo themselves might recognise this problem and are going to try to start fixing it with new franchises that appeal to the american market.  The western world is so hell bent on "mature" titles that they dont give any other game the time it deserves.  Unfortunately for Nintendo the Gamecube is plagued with the "tiku tiku tiku! " image thus the western world ignores it.  Hopefully Nintendo can release some sort of Halo killer at launch along with a few other "mature" titles to really stick it up the american market.

Yes there are. But damn near none are on Nintendo's console...For someone who only plays Nintendo's consoles like me, we are starving for more better FpS, Rpgs and RTs's. Nintendo needs to get on the ball.

I stand by the rest of your post.

Also with respect to your subsequent post, your right the exception does not change the rule. I dont know what Animal crossing is but Nintendogs is a handheld game. Cute very much works for handhelds as an overwhelmimg majority of handheld owners tend to be younger and females hold a higher representation. But for consoles its a different story. Cute games only sell well on the GC because Nintendo tries for that market. Look at the colors and themes they use. The GC as a higher proportion of younger people playing it and thats why cute games sell. But that demographic for consoles is smaller. Why else are Nintendo "dead"(no pun intended) last here in the US. They need to attract all other demographics like the PS and xbox did.

Another thing I think Nintendo does is try too hard to be different.  If we make an fps it has to be weird.  I loved Metroid Prime, but I think many found it too wierd.  Like I said earlier I have alreayd played too many standard fps games and Metroid was just so refreshing.

Going back to my MarioKartD example about extra features and options.  I would put in things like have a race with nopowerups.  Limit only certain racers.  Limit races to only certain powerups.  Do a best-of tournament using courses of your choosing.  yada yada yada.  Sure that sht ain't going to be used alot.  But you could throw in there.  You could bury it too so it won't intimidate the casual user.

I don't want Nintendo to lose focus on making smooth quality games.  Maybe they would if they added these extra features.  Maybe it would be at the expense of the rest of the game.  They do seem very profit oriented.  This is good in that it keeps them in the game.  But also seems to prevent them from changing.  This happens to many companies tho that hit the top.  There's only one way to go after that.

IN some ways no online wasn't a mistake.  Not many were online last generation.  Only 10% of xbox users were so I don't think you can say online turned that console around.  I think it was Halo.

But you know maybe not many were using it, but some were and you could provided rudimentary support for your console.  You did release the broadband adapter.  You did release the modem adapter.  If you would have had Madden (and EA in general) online and a couple of your other titles online then no one could say you weren't online.

Back to the feature thing I'll use Mario Super STrikers as an example.  Great game, but besides that core game there's nothing there.  There's not many stadiums and not many characters to play with.

Anyway that's all I have to say.

Well, I only read the first page of the article, and then I stopped, because his definition of different games is American games...and those are very not-different from my perspective.

Actually, part of the issue is that this article is a few years old, but I think it says a lot that in those 2.5 years, the very games he mentions as being totally different from Japanese videogames have become huge cliches in the West.  They're also decent examples of a sickness in Western gaming that requires more and more cinematic storylines and less and less thought about gameplay.  If you can come up with a big new twist for the Jak storyline, you've got a sequel!

Totally disagree with the first page, not reading the rest.
That's my opinion, not yours.
