RESI EVIL SHAMBLING ONTO REVOLUTION?

Resident Evil DS producer Minoru Nakai on Nintendo's next-gen machine - will we see Revolution Resi someday?

14:41 Minoru Nakai, producer of the forthcoming Resident Evil remake for Nintendo's DS, has revealed that he's currently involved with a project for the Revolution at Capcom.

Speaking to website Jeux-France.com, Nakai let slip that while the unannounced game will not be a Resident Evil title, the experience his team gains with the machine could pave the wave for a new entry in the Resi series. What's more, the Revolution's unique controller could create an evolutionary leap in the series as big as the one on display in Resi 4.

So, Nakai seems impressed enough with Nintendo's offering to consider it might provide the perfect match for taking the Resi franchise into new, unchartered waters. It would seem that Capcom's got no plans to bring the series to the next-gen console just yet though - does this mean we can wave goodbye to hopes of Resident Evil 5 on the Revolution afterall?

Even though he says no RE5 yet, it sounds like they plan on bringing it over once they get a hang of the controller

I'm sure they'll announce a port for the PS3 in a couple months. And I'm also sure when it sells 1,000,000 copies on the Rev and 25 on the PS3, the sequel will be PS3 exclusive.

If he's using the controller properly there's no way it'll make it past Sony's "Ports must be better on our system!" rule since that'd mean breaking the controls.

Heh, imagine what if that ended up being a sequel to some less beloved Capcom game like Killer 7, P.N. 03 or Gotcha Force?

I can't think of a franchise more suited to the REV's controller than RE.
The cumbersome controls have plagued the series from the start and even though RE4 made a lot of progress it still has a ways to go. Though you adjust to it, aiming with the analog stick is awkward in any game and the over-the-shoulder camera just makes it worse. Knife attacks are incredibly limited and throwing gernades takes a lot of guess work. But with the Rev's controller not only would aiming be a breeze, you could swing and thrust a knife any which way, and even toss a virtual gernade as near or far as you want.
Of course the controller would also lend itself to all types of new puzzles. Even simple things like turning a virtual crank or sticking a virtual key in a lock would make the game that much more immersive. RE on the REV could be the scariest RE game yet simply because you're so much more immersed in it and have to react realisticly to monsters jumping out at you as opposed to merely pressing a button.
Of course the thing that really distracts from the atmosphere in the RE titles in the constant navigation of the inventory/map screens. But with the point-and-click ability of the new controller you could select/re-arrange items faster than ever before. In previous RE games it takes a few seconds to go to the inventory screen and switch weapons. May not seem like a lot but in the middle of a boss fight it's really distracting. On the Rev, you could probably do it in less than a second.

If it was RE5 he would of said so, it has already been announced for the PS3 and 360. So it may be something like the horrid dead aim series so some spin off.

Professional 666 is to Daisy as I am to Ada.

That shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

RE2 on the N64 and RE4 on the GCN have Ada.  I'd care more about RE5 if it had Ada; following the pattern, I'd look forward to an RE6 on the Revolution with more Ada.  Oh, and Rev. controls.

So we get a new-IP and potentially Resident Evil?!

That's a win-win situation.

Honestly, the way RE is evolving, it could become one of the best games on the REV if implemented right. Hell, they could even leave the graphics how they were and spruce up the gameplay. However, if they did both, there's nothing stopping RE from getting a GOTY award (except Zelda...of course).

Imagine this....

1) Slicing off the head of a Zombie with your chainsaw
2) Quickly aiming your pistol with precision, capping every single zombie in a horde of 50!
3) Walking through a decripit house with nothing but a knife and a lantern. Pressing a button toggle's the control of the items. The light from the latern stuns the enemies and keeps them at bay. But beware, once an enemy smashes your lantern, it's gone. You'll have to rely on the moon-light that shines through the holes in the roof (which could be  visually stunning).
4) Actively running and shooting at the same time. This could make for some very intense situations.
5) Being able to shoot or stab over your shoulder should a zombie be attack you from behind.
6) and so on...
"Hey....

I'm not a whore, ok? Really.....really, I'm not.

But, if she slips man....if she slips, I slide!"

I haven't found Resident Evil scary.  There wasn't enough psychological engrossment or involvement.  Perhaps a new RE using Revolution controls will actually get me involved enough to raise my heart rate.

Well, Ada already does that...

The visuals in RE didn't freak me out that much - it's the sound that really does it. (Yo voy a matar! Morir es vivir! Morir es vivir!)

Anyways, I'm not going to get my hopes up about anything just yet - on the Cube, devs had a tendency to overpromise and underdeliver. Besides a simple statement like 'Capcom is developing for Rev' or 'we might get next RE' should be expected...why the hell WOULDN'T any of the major Japanese devs (at least those that haven't taken money hats) develop for the Rev? This isn't really news in my book, especially considering that he's worked with Nintendo before with Minish Cap.

Now, if we had some comments from Western devs that aren't EA (LucasArts, Rockstar, SK, Monolith, the list goes on...) other than the usual "We're very intrigued with the controller", then THAT would be real news...and I'm afraid we're not getting that before March/GDC.

With the new controller wouldn't it be super easy to aim and shoot in a 3rd person shooter without targeting? I could see that working really well in a 3D Mega Man game.

This is good to hear. The game will most likely be a shooter if it's similar to RE, so we know we have this and Ubisoft's exclusive FPS. Things are looking good so far. If the rev can get enough exclusive FPS games, that will surely bring in some new userbase who didn't own a GCN. And assuming MP3 will be a launch title (or shortly after), hopefully Ninty will do better in North America this time around.

How do you mean? I tend to find the Resident Evil games (or at least RE4 and the remake) scary because, if I were in those situations in real life, I'd be scared sh!tless. And the games do a mostly good job of making me feel like I am experiencing those situations for real. So they scare me mostly sh!tless.

Oh really? I've always found that Resident Evil games go for the cheap scare, but overall aren't really scary. In RE4, the only time I was moderately scared was during the Regenerator / Iron Maiden parts *shudders* Damn those bastards!

I find that Eternal Darkness was really the only game that truly scared me..

Resident Evil 4 is scary cause there's just so damn many of them coming at you at once.

If Resident Evils controls are to be made more "flexible" on Revolution, they'd have to compensate by also making the zombies / enemies more "flexible". You're in a dark sewer... aiming all over the place with your flashlight / gun combo while there's some kind of creature jumping around from wall to wall to the roof to the floor to YOUR FACE. They'd have to still find some way to restrict it to keep it Resident Evil.

Anyway, I doubt there's an RE game coming to Cube, but I have no idea what this mysterious Capcom game will be! It can't be Viewtiful Joe or Okami since it doesn't appear it's the Clover division doing this Rev game, maybe another Resident Evil 1 port LOL. Actually i'd totally eat that up if they remade it with RE4 controls / camera, actually they should remake RE2 with RE4 gameplay.

Resident Evil is the kind of game that makes you jump, but if you trully want to experience something scary as hell try the zombie leves in any Thief game, specially the shalebridge craddle of Thief III.

I haven't played the later Silent Hill games (3 or 4), but there were some particularly freaky moments late in Silent Hill 2, and all along the way there was this increasing sense of dread and eerieness.  I could go into detail about the time I nearly crapped my pants, but I won't at the moment (I'm at work).

I personally find Resident Evil more fun, but in terms of scariness, it could be a lot more.  Sure, there's freaky bosses and swarms of zombies (or Ganado in 4), and the occasional "BOO!" but I think overall it's just not creepy enough.  Like in Silent Hill, I think a lot more is left unexplained and what seems to be the case is more supernatural and psychological then biological.  The Japanese title "Biohazard" already gives it away.  I'm not saying a viral outbreak isn't scary, it's just not as WTF as some nightmarish weirdness.  But again, I do find it more fun than Silent Hill and other horror games I've played, so RE fans shouldn't tear me apart, I'm one of them!

While I'm sure the controller is perfect for FPSes and may get the Revolution much needed support for this genre, I'm hesitant about series turning into FPSes.  I'd still like more main Mega Man games (I'm not sick of them yet), and while a Mega Man FPS might be nice, I don't want to see the main series (or the more active X series, I guess) all totally turn into total FPSes.

Megaman given the Metriod Prime Treatment.  Though it would have to be third-person because how else would you see the costume change?  Though I have to say I like the Megaman series a lot more when it didn't look kid-die.  I mean there were interesting enemies and all.  I don't want it to go to the gritty angst filled X direction.  But I would like it to be more metallic less Noggin like.   Also whose idea was it to make it so that whenever anyone out in kid-die with it's actual spelling that it would become I LOVE HALO 2?

Unfortunately, we can probably screw that idea.  As evidenced by Megaman Powered Up, it looks like Capcom is trying their damndest to make sure the classic and X series games don't get confused.  (what they did to Cutman's theme on Powered Up... MAN) Even if that means going squeaky with the classic series.  Personally, I didn't mind it too much (with the exception of Powered Up, that went too far) but I'm not gonna lie to anyone when I say MM 1-7 were better in that respect.  MM7 got cuter, but it still kept itself slick while doing it.

The Megaman 1 remake on the PSP ("It's the way I originally imagined it!") is the non-plus-ultra in cuteness.

What costume change? There's not a lot of costume changing going on in Megaman, you get a few special armors and stuff but that's secondary. The only common change is the weapon and that would be visible in first person as well.

If they do make a new 3D Megaman with the Rev controller they should give it an over-the-shoulder view like in RE4. The Rev's remote would be used to both aim Megaman's gun and position the camera while the analog accessory would be used for traditional platforming action. The great thing about the Rev setup is it allows you to move freely while precisely aiming and shooting. That's technically possible with dual analog controls on a standard controller but the Rev has an obviously much easier and more accessible way of doing it. With the Rev controller and analog accessory Capcom could finally bring Megaman's fast-paced, straight-forward controls into the 3D realm.
