Hmmm...Cannot read disc?
« on: January 17, 2006, 01:55:10 PM »
I have a gamecube (duh) that has no more warranty, and it will let me play it for about 25-30 minutes and then it says something like the disc cannot be read...or something like that.  I was just wodering what my options are besides:
A.) Selling it to Gamecrazy for 28.50 and buying a used 1 the next day XD
B.) Paying 62.50 for it to be rapaired by Nintendo
C.) Paying less (55.89) for a refurbished than to repair it from nintendo (WTF NINTENDO?)
D.) Throwing it down my stairs (most likely not even damaging it any more than it is) and blaming it on my 4-year old brother
E.) Setting it ablaze and dancing around it in a sacrificial manner

I assume you meant hoes, and if so that's really funny.

If you're interested in either Mario Party 7 or Pokemon Gale of Darkness you might want to consider buying a new GameCube.  Both bundles are $99.99 and I believe the Pokemon one comes with an extra controller.

How old is your system?  If it's launch you're probably out of luck but if its less than two years old call Nintendo and speak with a live agent.  They might be willing to fix it for free.  (They've done it for me before.)

What's a hose?  A garden hose?  Huh?

I thought you were making a joke about beating hoes.

Gues what! I fixed it myself!
here s wat i did 4 those of u in woder...NEVER CUT WIRES! UNPLUG EVERYTHING CONNECTED 2 GC
IM NOT LIABLE FOR YOU BREAKING YOUR GC
1.) instead of  buying a special 4.5mm gamebit screwdriver, I took a CLEAR bic pen, melted it with a lighter until it was almost like lava
2.) shoved it on the "special" safety screws and waited a min. or 2, it molded 2 the shape of the screw.  I had 2 re do it 4 evry screw cuz it kept on stripping (plastic may get stuk in the screws if done incorrectly but i did it okay so u could easily do it 2)
3.) after i took the screws off, I tok the top of my GC off.
4.) then i took the fan off (gold screws, not the little microscopic 1's) might be easier if u take the back off first
5.) then I took the front off (the only things that come off all the way are the back, the top, the DVD chasis and the DVD drive comes off the DVD chasis)
6.) unscrewed the 4 little grounding screws that go on top of the memory card slots (also don't 4get 2 take the little metal things off that u just unscrewed)
7.) after that I unscrewed all the screws that hold the UPPER metal chasis to the LOWER metal chasis take all of those screws out (dont 4get the ones on the back)
8.) once I tok the chasis off, i flipped over the chasis so it was upside down (leave a crappy game here it usually goese so yur lens dosnt get scratched) and removed all the little tiny screws holdin the chasis to the DVD drive and separated the pieces
9.)  if u have done everything right so far youll c a green motherboard type thingy on the undersidde of the DVD drive, there is a little screw on a black chip about the same size as the screw near the middle of the chip (hard 2 spot, need good eyes) once you locate that screw (called potensiometer or sumthin) twist it counter_clockwise about 3 degrees, yes, barely at all
10.) once u have done that put yur GC back together without using any screws (except 4 the grounding screws on top of the mem. card slots and put the metal thingys back on, the part sticking up on them chould be closer 2 the front)
11.) once assembled without any screws turn on yur gamecube put yur ear close 2 the GC and listen 4 a little beeeep noise while you turn it on (not rite away about 1 sec afer it is turned on)
12.) if it still has a disc read error, try playing it again cuz the GC will auto calibrate  screw, if u get a DRE (disc read error) turn the potensiometer a TINY bit more (yull no yuv twisted it 2 much wen u dont hear that little beeeep noise wen u boot up the GC) if no beep noise is heard then screw it clockwise 1 degree
13.) if twisted 2 much, the laser will burn the lens and possibly the game that is in there so b careful of that
14.) once you have calibrated the laser correctly, it should be working again
15.) dont forget 2 put all the screws back in once calibrated!
if I left anything out, or you need sum help: (pleze no spam)

the reason y this wrks is over time the laser loses it's strength and needs calibration, what this does is by calibrating the potensiometer, it is sending a stronger laser signal, so it has an easier time reading discs. this method only works 75-80 % of the time
