Hooking up a Gamecube to a LCD monitor - bad?
« on: January 01, 2006, 12:49:39 PM »
I have a 20" Dell LCD monitor that I can hookup SVIDEO and Component IN.  I tried hooking up my N64 awhile back, looked like crap on the monitor because of the native high resoultion (1600x1200).  Would this be the case if I hookup a Gamecube to it?

BTW, I havent bought a Gamecube yet...

Question, does your LCD monitor switch to a "TV Mode" when displaying S-Video or Component content?  Does it literally take any video feed and expand them to 1600x1200 no-matter-what?

I imagine you're looking into a GameCube system which lacks Component Video-output, with your best option being an S-Video connection.  S-Video isn't bad, and GameCube content (~640x480) shouldn't look as aweful as the N64 content (~320x240) did, because the N64 content must be upscaled to a greater extent.

Try hooking up a DVD player to the LCD via S-Video.  If you can live with what you see, then a GameCube image should be fine as well; they essentially have the same resolution.

I have my cube hooked up to my 19" NEC LCD monitor via the digital output->vga in for when the games support Progressive Scan.  It looks fine with no problems.

As Pro said with an analogue connection, there shouldn't be any issues either.  The Cube's resolution should be high enough to hide any inconsistancies.

Well I have the Dell monitor in question (a 2001FP I'm guessing) and it doesn't look that hot at all. Using either composite or Svid and watching television on it looks much better than the GC connected to it, for whatever reason. Noticable ghosting and just kinda blurry overall. Haven't tested any other consoles.

I guess one could get used to it if that were their only option, but I'm also used to looking at component in with GC on my CRT television (standard def).
Oops pow suprise!

Are you connecting the GC directly to the monitor, or via some TV-inputs on your system?

When I go back to school I'll hook my cube up to my neighbor's monitor (he has the same one you do) and see what goes down. when we played NES on it it didn't look bad, we haven't tried any other systems
