Dreamcast is the Greatest
« on: December 23, 2005, 03:46:15 AM »
The Dreamcast was an AWESOME system but was just pulverized by the ps2 hype machine.

Some may scoff that alot of the good games on the Dreamcast can be had on Gamecube, but that wasnt the case when it was still up and running. You had exclusive:

Grandia 2
Skies of Arcadia
Im gonna say it... oh yes, im gonna say it..... Seaman was a freakin awesome innovative game (deserving of a ds port).
JetSet series,
SNK vs Capcom 2 I believe
Ikaruga
Ofcourse, SHENMUE! (9.7 by IGN),
The 2k sports series that dominated EA's offerings even then,
Sonic Adventures,
DOA 2,
Phantast Star online,
Quake III,
Space channel 5,
RE:Code Veronica! (my #1 RE game, though I admit I have not played 4)

.... and plenty more 1st and 3rd party sweet offerings.

I miss Sega in domination mode, they truly had a innovative mentality (alot like Nintendo).

And no, Sega is not over-rated, they produced some of the greatest games this generation, unfortunately most of them came out on xbox. Panzer Dragon Orta - Best looking game on xbox as far as im concerned. Shenmue 2 - spectacularly deep and involving.

I don't want to hear no Sega hatin. lol

Now im just hoping the Sega enters into a strategic exclusivity pact with Nintendo so I can have Shenmue 3 on my revolution. The ONLY reason I bought a xbox was for Shenmue 2 and Panzer Dragon, Sega better not make me buy a 360 for Shenmue 3.

Rant Over.

No SEGA hating here..though I do believe that they have really been slipping. Especially the Sonic Team - Sonic Rush is the only decent title from them in a long time.

Oh yeah, you forgot Soul Calibur and Rayman... poor DreamCast

And they gave us F-Zero GX, so I'm happy

The DoA series was never good.  NEVER. Doesn't matter what system it's on.  All that game ever came out to be was a mockery of the Virtua Fighter engine.  It was VF minus ALL of it's depth, and from what I've recently heard DoA4 hasn't changed it one bit.

For some odd reason, a lot of Capcom ports to the system just felt and sometimes even looked really off.  The only 2 arcade ports that felt right on there was SF3DI and SSF2X, one of which was an import.  Their original work for it was less than satisfactory, either glitch filled or just plain broken in gameplay.

I'm not even gonna get started with the Sonic Adventures, I think we all know where that's going.

I like the system, but it's nowhere close to being perfect.

The problem with the Dreamcast now is that almost every one of those games was released on another system, either at the time of release or after Dreamcast's death. I was looking into getting one recently, but i could barely find any exclusive games to make it worth it.

Maybe I worded something wrong earlier.  Virtua Fighter surely doesn't turn into counter spam, heck at least with VF4Evo it's probably the most balanced fighting game ever made, with only one character that can't compete.  DoA is based off of the VF2 engine, however Itagaki simplified it to the point of stupidity.

I've always noticed that people who bought DreamCast loved it. Really, few people who owned one really found anything wrong with it (besides it dying).

The Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles. It was PERFECT for fighting games, that D-pad almost seems like it was made with 2-D fighters in mind. The large number of Capcom and SNK titles for the system just made it 100x better then PS2. The Sony controller sucks hard, especially the D-pad >_< I lol'd when I saw that they're using the same controller again LOL.
Currently Playing: Twilight Princess(Wii), Castlevania: PoR(DS), Mario vs. Donkey Kong2(DS), Wii sports(Wii)
Anticipating: Mario Galaxy(Wii), Blue Dragon(360), Dragon Quest:Swords(Wii), Dragon Quest IX (DS)

EDIT:  Edited for historical accuracy.

In all seriousness, I miss Sega because their departure from the console race and Sonys rise to power marked the beginning of the rape of the video game industry.  Originality shunned and formulatic mass-appeal games praised.  Sega and Nintendo though one-time rivals were still in the same school of video game ideology as far as im concerned.  They were not afraid to take chances... and that gave us fun and original games.

Fun and Original, the complete opposite of the x-box lineup both 1st and third party.  PS2 while having some quirky and inovative third party games, is dull and formulaic with its first-party offerings.

Anyways, the point is, I loved the Dreamcast for its innovative, fun and quirky games. Which, was practically every 1st party game on the system.   Samba De Amigo, Space Channel 5, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Ecco, PSO... etc.

Than tally me up as one of the dissapointed. I loved fighters, and Dreamcast will probably go down in history as the best system for fighters, but beyond that... bleh. Maybe a handful of other games worth looking over, and some shooters, and not much else. I should point out, though, that I didn't like Shenmue at all, and most people cite that game as one of the best.

Dreamcast died because Sonic died. A shame because 2D Sonic destroyed 2D Mario, and he had lots of potential in 3D, but Sonic Team didn't know what they were doing.

2D Sonic never destroyed 2D Mario. The speed in Sonic was mostly uncontrolled, you just followed a path the designers set up for you since you couldn't see where you were going, anyway. Mario was a lot more interactive.

SEGA = rusty gold! Sonic 2d = gold! Sonic 3d = silver! Dreamcast = pure gold!!!

I like sega games, they were just as good as most any nintendo game all but zelda/mario. The one thing that stop them is they kept screwing up with getting people to buy their games. I wish sega come back or that nintendo buy sega and turn sega to a geat 2nd party.

Or Sega's kind of like the slob-for-a-friend from Shaun of the Dead?

Anyway, I'm not "returning" to fighting games until they design a fleshed-out blocking/parrying system that actually makes them more than just combo-fests.

I was kidding originally. But to say Sonic in ANY form is better than Mario is just plain STUPID. Sonic was at best an amusing diversion, at worst a highly overrated rail jumper posing as something worthwhile.

Indeed but I have seriously seen people call DoA (3 or 4 I think) the greatest fighting game ever, claiming that it's better than even Soul Calibur. I wonder if that comes from playing in some special way that makes DoA have depth ot whether it's XBox FDS (fanboy delusion syndrome).

I haven't played any 2-D fighters on X-box, but from feeling the D-pad it didn't seem as bad as Sony's. But like I said, I haven't used it on any fighters so I can't really say... At least it seems you can play for more then 30mins without ripping your thumb open >_<

The Playstation controller just sucks hard all around. Often people say I just don't use it enough to get the feel of it.... But I've been playing PSX and PS2 often, and the controller has never felt right. When I first played the Dreamcast and Gamecube the controller was comfortable and easy to use right from the start. They had a zero learning curve for me.

But getting back on topic, I feel the Dreamcast could have grown into something grand if given the chance. There maybe 6-7 games (maybe 9-10 counting imports) I would like on the X-box, and that's throughout the entire life of the system. While there are countless games I love on the DC, and it died before it could really get going.
