Making my DS feel all brand new?
« on: November 21, 2005, 03:14:27 PM »
Okay, long story short, I brought my DS to camp and let a lot of people borrow it (and converted a few people to DSism). But now, my housing is sorta scratched, as is my touch screen. So, I'd like to make my DS feel brand new again. I'm going to order a 4.5mm Gamebit screwdriver off of Lik-Sang to open up the casing, but I don't know what to do from there on. Does anybody know where I can get a replacement plastic/glass overlay for the touchscreen? Also, as for the housing, I'm thinking of just taking the internals out, putting tape over the ports and holes and things, and just spraypainting it. Anybody know what type of paint would cling best to the plastic, and that doesn't chip?

You can get one from Nintendo's Online Store for $3.95

Linky

Edit: Hm... I just checked the site again and it says that the lower screen is not replacable by the user.

This is because there are two different types of touchscreens in use by DSes. One's grainy and more sensitive, the other's more vibrant but slower and possibly more delicate.

Yep, that isj ust for the top screen. But I'm nearly positive that most, if not all touch-screens have some sort of plastic or another as an overlay. Anyway, I tihnk I have the grainier, sensitive one - I got it about a week after the US launch.

That actually doesn't matter at all.  Both screen types (grainy and grid) have been available since launch and both types are still being made today (AFAIK).  I have a launch system and I have the grainy screen.

There's a pretty decent FAQ over at GameFAQS.  Check out the "Touchscreen FAQ".

Talking about DS repairs. after changing my DS because of dead pixel, the new one has the top screen slightly tilted, not a terribly thing, but I was wondering if this can be fixed manually or if I should go change it (again).

damn my luck!

What do you mean by "the new one has the top screen slightly tilted"?

I sent my DS in to Nintendo Canada last Monday before the warranty expired (I had 1 bad pixel on the top screen), and I received a replacement DS on Friday. It is a refurbished machine (there is a sticker that essentially says so), but it looks and feels brand new. The touchscreen it came back with was the slower to respond one, which is kind of strange after having the other kind for almost 1 year.

I mean the screen is not parallel to the DS case, it doesnt matter, I dont notice it at all now anyway.
