New Revolution Info!
« on: October 31, 2005, 02:16:01 AM »
Jim Merrick from Nintendo Europe has confirmed the following in an interview here

- The USB Wi-fi adapter will also be compatible with Revolution.
- Revolution will launch worlwide within 14 weeks maximum, that means on the same quarter in every region.
- Multiplayer mode in Revolution will be similar to the NDS: multiple players with only one copy of the game.
- You'll be able to download retro games from different regions (for instance, an European user could download Super Mario RPG for the SNES from the US server).
- When played on Revolution, N64 games will have better framerate but there won't be significant graphical improvements.
- No Revolution games will be shown in 2005.
- There won't be any significant differences in the graphics of Revolution compared to the other systems

Truly, madly, deeply awesome....

Although I am pretty bummed about the no games shown in 2005....but that doesn't mean that they won't be announced I guess.

Alright, finally some news. Great that I can download Sin & Punishment here in the states.  Umm could somebody clarify that "14weeks" statement.  Does mean that its's coming out within 14weeks or from Japan to New Zeland the release will be spead across 14weeks. I'm guessing the latter.  All in all good stuff.

Majora's Mask without the low framerate of some parts, OMG! I cant wait! I just wish Nintendo will consider to give you away for free the game if you already own it, or at least a discount or bonus of some sort.

EDIT:

more bits for you:

In Europe it will be installed 25000 conection points for online gaming, in adittion to a possible deal with some companies similar to mack donald's over there in the states.

The USB wi-fi, as oppose to USA, will be available in stores instead of online in Europe, the price is steep though, 40 euros.

The fishing demo mentioned in the hands on impression used no buttons whatsover O_o I didnt know that, and just shows the controller is extremely precise, if you moved the hand too fast you'll lose the fish.

They want 80% of DS owners to go at least one time into online gaming. I found this clarifying, because then their number is bit more realistic for me.

The dont want to just show images because the whole product is whats important and no game is ready to be presented in playable form, and with the new remote is totally necesary to present the whole package, not just screenshots.

As an example of third party support, Merrick cited when the sims 2 were introduced in Europe and Wright commented that the DS was the better version in all consoles because of the touch screen, they want the same with Rev, for third party games to use traditional controls but also see if they can enhance gameplay with the new posiblities.

This is great information.

1)Playing online multiplayer games just became incredibly easy...but my question is, is that 1 game for LAN Revolution play or Online Revolution play.  LAN makes sense, but Online doesn't.

2)Better Frame Rates for N64 games makes perfect sense, and its a great compromise for improving the games without spending money to update the actual game and make it cost more.  Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Torok, Zelda, Mario, everything will be better with this.  (Now I wish they could make the Mario 64 the new one for the DS though.)

3)Similar graphics.  I still think the system will be underpowered, but not rendering the high defination graphics will really help Nintendo here.  We will see Nintendo playing conservatively, and giving games what they want for cheaper.

4)Retro Game Downloads:  Interesting.  Each region has its own server.  This is great to keep things straight and know what language and game you are downloading.  It also means that you can choose to download the best version of a game if improvements were made to one over another.

5)I completely understand not showing any games before 2006.  But hopefully that means we will still get some new information somewhere.  Showing games before they are ready, just prepares the media for what to expect and really hinders being blown away later...however, showing a game later when it is properly ready to be experienced can cause the media to see the full product and realization of the designers.  You do this with 2-3 top games and you create a frenzy for the Revolution.

It'll be single-disc play for LAN...Online doesn't make sense at ALL so it shouldn't even be considered...Better framerates = Great...

It's disappointing that we won't see any games this year, but whatever, I'll live...Hopefully Ninty still reveals more on the remaining secrets of the system...

Why doesn't online single disc make sense?  If you have Smash Bros. and I never played the game before, then why wouldn't single-disc be great for trying games first just to see if you like it. What if you swear up and down by Star Fox V and I'm reluctant to try but you say " just log on while I'm playing, be my wing man and see what happens". Is this not good or plausible?

Well it seems pretty difficult to transfer all that data online, but if the Revolution is in the same room it would be easier. Like copying a file from one PC to another rather than downloading it.

It makes more sense to have some sort of demo download center, which Merrik also mentioned, nothing definitive, but they are thinking about the posibility, also to dowload trailers and even rent games online through download, its all being considered.

There really needs to be a translation for the entire interview.

Great news all around. The thing that got me most excited was the entire Online deal. It seems like they are taking the time to think of the best possible way to incoorperate it in it's entirety and not just provide online to games. Also, single disk LAN games is by far the best thing I've ever heard, not to mention it being completely wireless. For the DS and even the GBA, this feature provided mass amounts of fun. I'm glad that same kind of fun can now be carried over to the REV with ease.

LAN gaming use to be the biggest bitch in the world. Now, all you need to play is two revs, two tv's, and the game. It's especially easy, provided the size of the REV is incredibly small.

I must say, I applaud Nintendo. They seem to be doing everything right.

This is unrelated to the topic, but remember that discussion we had about how some thought Miyamoto did drugs. Well I may of found something that is really evidence but it does suggest he may have dabbled with some.

Quote

Do you remember how you came up with Super Mario Bros.?

It started with a simple idea. I thought: "I wonder what it would be like to have a character that bounces around. And the background should be a clear, blue sky." I took that idea to a programmer, and we started working on it.

Mario ended up being too big, so we shrank him. Then we thought, "What if he can grow and shrink? How would he do that? It would have to be a magic mushroom! Where would a mushroom grow? In a forest." We thought of giving Mario a girlfriend, and then we started talking about Alice in Wonderland.

woah revolution 2!!!!

"But I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn't the typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I've always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about that. "

Single-original online gaming would be stupid, even if feasible you'd face the problem that noone would want to buy the game then. Restricting single-original play to local areas makes sure you don't have it available very often, just enough to try it but not enough to replace the game. Online you'll always find someone willing to play so there'd be no real restriction.

Offering demos online that may even have a limited multiplayer mode would work, of course but that's something entirely different from single-original online play. Not offering demos online would be idiotic. Or Nintendoesque

Let's not get bummed over no games in 2005...2005 is nearly over!

This is pretty kickin' news, especially about the single-disc mulitplayer.  Better framterates on N64 games means I can finally play Perfect Dark without throwing up!

More tidbits not mentioned

Quote

i've been reading the full interview and it's pretty interesting, some facts that wasnt mentionated:

- the dongle will be sold at stores on europe, no online crap

on revolution wifi:
- there is alot of features on the board that still being discussed, some of them are: temprary game rentals before purchase, demo downloads, trailers
- DS compatible with Revolution

on revolution games:
- third partys already have fully funtional devkits very oriented to the final product and TGS-alike controllers
- let's say a football game like FIFA who is on PS3 and Xbox360 aswell, when ported to revolution they want to include newoptions like calculate the angle on free kicks tilting the controller, make driftings with quick controller movements, pointing to the screen when shooting penalty kicks, etc.

That's from Gaming-Age forums, by a forum goer so you don't have to believe it if you don't want to. Also, sopposedly babelfish does a good job with spanish.

EDIT: Forgot to add my opinion. It's nice to hear that 3rd parties have devkits even if they aren't the final devkits. Also, having controllers akin to the TGS controller is a major plus.

The best news up there would definitely have to be the DS compatibility with the REV. It was mentioned here and there but now it is official. I can't wait to see what is done with the connection and how it's implemented. It would be great if it was like the GC-GBA connection. However, it would be awesome if it allowed the DS to talk with the REV without a game specifically made for that type of function. Of course, I'm talking about being able to access the REV's memory, or should I just say games, and take them on the go.

A feature like that is a MAJOR incentive for any DS owner to buy a REV and vice-versa. I hope Nintendo doesn't pass this opportunity by.

When played on Revolution, N64 games will have better framerate but there won't be significant graphical improvements.

Hey as long as the games run nice and smooth there's nothing to complain about.  I bet the small graphical improvements are probably:

-all games run at standard 640x480 resolutions and possible 480p
-some sort of automatic anti aliasing
-perhaps some sort of texture filtering? (would be a plus but not neccissary)

Revolution will launch worlwide within 14 weeks maximum, that means on the same quarter in every region.

This is great news.  Worldwide launch within 3.5 months!  How do the regions go?  Japan > USA > Europe > Australia or something?  I'm excited about getting the console about a month after it launches in Japan.

There won't be any significant differences in the graphics of Revolution compared to the other systems

I hope he is correct in saying this...  This will keep me from worrying too much for now but seeing games next year will hopefuly finally put my doubts to rest.  If the difference is like PS2's visuals compared to the other consoles I can live with that.

That's good news for Europe. GC launch was pretty long wait for them, only two months for US. I think it's too early to give credence to what Merrick is saying about release dates. It's too early in the game, they could still pull a fast one. My prediction rev launching in all territories in this order (based on nothing) - August Japan, Sept. US and Europe, Oct. the Aussies, if what Merrick says is true.

I expect we should all be marking our calendars off for GDC. If they don't show anything there, I'd be really disappointed. It would be the perfect forum too, to show the more reluctant devs what could be done with the controller in a more meaningful way.
