DDR with Mario (HELP ME TY!)
« on: October 20, 2005, 09:17:09 AM »
So, this game is coming out next week and I am seriously looking forward to it.  The problem is... I want to use my nice PS2 dance pads with it...

Do the many PS2 -> GCN controller converters work for dance pads?  Does anyone sell them besides import stores?  I want to get my hands on them, but 2 universal adaptors with 3-5 day shipping from Play-Asia would be over 50 bucks.

Also, we can just talk about the game here too.

i see you don't want to use Mario-themed pads.

try the Track&Field NES Pad.

If you read Johnny's DDR Mario review he said he was able to use a converter but with a drawback of not being able to map the Z button.

Well, i went ahead and ordered some converters to use with my Red Octane rip-off pads.  I can't wait for this game and I hope I can use the Toys-r-us sale next week to grab it.

Yeah I saw it at Toys R US yesterday and actually picked it up today. I got the last copy though (there were 3 or 4 when I came in the day before). I'd expect that all stores should have it by sometime tomorrow at the latest (if they haven't sold out already).

Well no EB or Game Stop had it but I just happend to walk into Walmart and wouldn't you guess, they had it. I was pretty worried at first about the difficulty, but SUPER HARD really is just that, well at least for me. I play DDR in the Arcade every now and then and im able to play the hardest songs on normal/standard/what ever it is and some of the easier heavy/extreem songs. Is that right? well I can do it, and though super hard isn't as hard as them insane difficulties it is pretty hard, and so far im only able to complete one of the super hard songs with a C, and the rest I can't even finish.

Now I just have to figure out how to unlock like 13 of the other songs not in story mode. Anyone know how?

Oh and I forgot to mention I crossed paths with just about the WORST person who could have ever worked at a video game store. It wasn't that he didn't know anything, but the way he forced his opinion out at me I couldn't believe it. It was at a game store called Game Force. I walk in and up to the front counter and ask if they have DDR with Mario. The guy who looked to be no younger than 21 goes "no we don't carry that Sh%*"
I was kind of stunned for a sec and then thought maybe he was joking. I don't feel like going all into it but here are some of the things he said.

"You can't dance to that sh%$... I saw some japanese people playing it with some kinda techno sh%#. It was only made so japanese people could get some rythem!"

He continued to make fun of me and other people who play DDR and said "have you played Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, now thats fun"

And also made fun of my Soul Calibur skills(because I play DDR) after I lost to some kid on the SC3 demo they had up. And I lost because something was wrong with the analog.

*side note* now I love spider-man, I play him at universal studios, and I can really get into character with jokes.

Back on topic. I couldn't believe how angry this guy made me, I mean I just don't get angry that easily. I was just trying to think of something to say back to him for insulting me in front of the other customers and his co-workers. I was ready to pound him with harsh words(not like yo mama is so fat type of stuff) just clever spidey like stuff, that would make everyone laugh and then have him pissed off. Im pretty good at that, but earlier tonight I just couldn't believe what I was hearing out of this guys mouth about me, different races, and one of the games I love. According to him he was just "telling it like it is." So much I wanted to retaliate with, but I couldn't get it together until I walked out of the store.

Man oh man did that make me angry. Im a tad younger looking than that guy, and I shaved today so im pretty sure I didn't look at all like 19. Looking like a little 16 year old I guess had that guy believing could talk to me in any way he pleased. I so wish he does that to someone else, but someone who is no where near as forgiving as me.

Forgive all of my mistakes please, im mad!!!!

Well I picked mine up at toys r us yesterday with the sale, but I've yet to try it out with my dance mats and converters.  I'll post more later.

The guy at Toys r Us told me they got a ton in and had already sold through 3 quarters of them when I picked mine up.  He said it was wooping SCIII in sales, at least at his store.  ^^

Well, the guy did say that DK Jungle Beat was fun, so.... Ah hell, he's still an idiot.

I picked it up at TRU with the sale as well.  Got it yesterday along with Fire Emblem and Geist.  I'm thinking about returning those two for RE:4 (PS2) (yes I own and love the Cube version) and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (XB).  I basically just bought those as placeholders because the sale is over this coming Saturday and RE 4 sold out (i'm actually surprised by this) and CoD didn't ship yet.

So, I tried playing it with my PS2 mats, and for some reason the converters I bought have so much a delay that it is unplayable.  I'm quite pissed about the whole thing...

Do any of you know of any stores that carry adaptors.  I ask because I would like to try more, but I'm not gonna keep ordering stuff online, on the chance it may not work..

Dammit.. I'm seriously bummed about this.

Is the mat that comes with it that horrible.  How sturdy are these mats in general, and also how much is ddr mario mix.

DDR with mario is 50 dollars and comes with a mat...

The quality is normal for home mats...  thin, easily bunchable.. etc.  The mats I have that I like to use are red octane like mats whigh 1.5 inch think foam and raised arrows.  They are much more precise and the raised arrows allow you to relocate yourself without looking down.

I'm considering buying this but I have no "good" pads and plan on using the one it comes with.  So has anyone, who like me is a DDR newbie that isn't used to a better pad, played the game and can give some impressions?

I've used the one it comes with for about 3 hours of play...

It actually seems to be a little bit nicer than the thin PS2 mats (like intec, etc.)  I was actually able to get 100% perfects on one of the simpler songs.  (Most thin pads will glitch at least once in a given song making it almost impossible to hit every note exactly.

Had I not been used to my thick foam pads I would have been plenty happy with it...  It works great for now, but I worry that constant folding and storage will damage it.  My original thin PS2 mats each eventually had one arrow sensor stuck on...

I have a personal plan of attack though, using velcro and some added foam, I'm going to attach the official Nintendo mats to the back of my nice mats, so I just flip them over depending on what system I'm playing on.    Using some extra foam, I hope to raise the arrows up a bit to help with the positioning issue.

Man I ramble on and on... but anyway, getting past my initial disappointment that my controller converters didn't work, I am extremely happy with the game itself.  The dancing animations are hysterical.  I don't think the different arrow types are a "sparkling innovation that wrecks the game" by any means.  They add a fun deviation from the normal formula and can be turned on and off.  Mini games aren't the greatest... I mean, they are fun, but I still prefer the normal formula.  Afterall, DDR is basically one big minigame.

On a side note, the mat works with other games as well (much in the same fashion that the Hori Digital Controller does).

I played some Super Mario Bros. (via the GameBoy Player) a few mins ago.  That was interesting.

After playing through most of the game I would recomend this game to any DDR fan, and especialy people new to the game.

The story mode is pretty nice, it allows you to unlock the other songs in the game. Once you read through the dialogue once on normal, going through it again on harder modes(to unlock more songs) just turns it into an annoyance.  But its still super pretty to look at.

When you first start the game you only have Twinkle Twinkle little star as a song in Free mode, so don't think you can just choose from the get go.  The song selection is probably the best I have seen even though there are only 30, mainly because the majority of them are great to move to.  When I play it at arcades and at a friends house there are usually only a couple songs that are really fun,(well to me at least.)

The Mario Bros 3 songs are so super awesome!!! As well as many others but the origonal Mario Bros theme is terrible!! It sounds great and what you see on screen is awesome, but for some reason the song is off beat, and boy does that make me sick!

The dance pad is very responsive and doesn't seem to slide all over the place like a few others do.  I have a hard wood floor and it barely moves even on super hard. Though on the carpet I played it on it didn't move much, but I did center it after avery song was over.  At first I wasn't sure about the pad until I started getting A's, then I could see  everything was my fault instead of the pad.

New DDR players are really going to enjoy this, and so will the main fans.  I'd say Easy up to Hard are just waaaay to easy,  Very hard is a nice challenge, but once you get Super hard it kicks it up by like "20" levels,  it just goes from 0 to 60 in a snap.

Worth every penny.

played this yesterday, i am not a previous DDR player..
it was definatly fun. i used the supplied pad and i have carpet. the pad didn't bunch, but sometimes i'd tap too lightly. the pad rotated somtimes or what mostly happened was i would drift on the pad, where stepping to the side would be the 'A' button instead of an arrow.

fun game. still trying to figure out the player/calorie thing.

and about carpentry progects to enhance the experience, plywood, four-by-fours, you know, that kinda stuff...

i just checked out the ddrfreak boards about this game, overall they seemed to like it. everyone liked the music, though apparently it is not as hard as some would have liked. The reviews of the pad say it was the best soft pad they've used, which is a definate plus.

and of course screen shots of beating bowser with all perfects.
