It was confirmed a long time ago that for first-party games, playing online will be free. Of course, you still have to have an internet connection which, obviously, is not free.
Thanks for listening.

The only thing you have to pay for is the Internet Connection and the Downloadable Games. And the service will be simular to Xbox live with Friend List etc.

It was during Nintendo's pre-E3 conference, it was kind of glossed over by everything else.

funny thing: my friend would rather pay the 50 some dollars for xbox live just to know that his gamertag is unique than play online for free (ala ps2 and rev) with a name that hundreds of other people may have.
I'll shut up now...

Well all you have to do to secure a unique name is call yourself something like "Nintendoeatsmyass".

I was actually worried about the non-unique username thing too. The thing is, in real life, peoples' names aren't unique, and yet we rarely have trouble telling people apart. Because each person has a unique ID in addition to their username, games will remember people in friends lists, high-scores lists, people-you-recently-played-with lists, etc, and I don't think anybody will have a problem with confusing people with one another.

If, for example, you run across somebody with a generic handle like 'mario', and want to play with him again, just add him to your friends list. If you forget to add him, and run into another 'mario' later, and want to know if he's the same guy, I'm sure you'll be able to look at their user information to determine that.

And the advantage to this system is that you don't have annoying names like mario_mario120903981.

So, yeah. Just explain all of that to your friend.

Or have unique names. An obvious solution, but I'm a simple man at heart.

I say everyone has a number.  And when you boot up the Rev., it greets you with, "Hello # 6"

I thought the idea of non unique sns was for the DS's wifi.  I know the DS's wifi is supposed to resemble what the Rev's wifi might be like but since not much info has been given about Rev's wifi service, I wouldn't completely jump the gun and say it won't have unique names.  I guess we'll find more out in October when Nintendo sheds some more light on their wifi service.

I think Nintendo has the best solution.

Give eveyone their own number (kinda like a phone number). You can make as many duplicates as you want of any name, and since everybody has a unique number, you won't confuse the mario on your friend's list with the mario your playing.

Not only that, but you can change your S/N whenever you'd like.
