a and b or X Y??
« on: September 16, 2005, 09:47:31 PM »
i noticed in the video there is an x and y instead of lowercase a and b...also i noticed Iwata is holding a controller with x  and y...so do you think its going to be x and  y or the confusing a b?

Personally i hope the controller screens are just out of date.

How about both?

I like the lowercase a and b, they tie into the GBM. They should have all four buttons.

I won't die if they're not included but it would be nice.

I want them to stick with a and b.  Let's keep the NES look at least so when you turn it sideways it still has the same layout as NES.

I personally like the X and Y with the a and b stamped beside the buttons...Just think about how confusing it'd be otherwise..."A, B, lowercase a, lowercase b"...Get my point?  Unless the two A's and the two B's are mapped to the same functions...

I agree with Bill. Besides, the controller they showed for the hands on demo wasn't finalized yet.

I think they will stay a b.  The point is that they are the same buttons as the upper a and b and I expect them to do the same things.

For example.  If you are playing a classic nes game, you could play holding the controller in one hand, or turn the controller on its side to get the classic feel.  In either cases the buttons will do the same thing so they should have the same name.  There is no physical way to hold the controller to use both anyway.

Just as a example, what if one of the lower ones would be used to withdraw a sword, or something. There would be a slight delay, as you have to reach down for it, but generally speaking people don't instantly have swords materialize in their hands either. I kind of doubt all developers won't be using both in the same game.

Yeah, They wouldn't be practical for action buttons, but great for secondary function. I can move my thumb up and down my TV remote no problem, so they will be fine.

i dont think anyone would play Super Mario Bros. 2 with teh controller in the vertical position. You'd have to take your thumb off the dpad anytime you needed to jump

if  you hold  the controller two handed...then  they are needed for more  functions...i mean if you weare  playing a  game and you could use a and b to  switch  weopons and AandB as action buttons

Perhaps, but it looks like you COULD use the d-pad and hit the A button with the bottom of your thumb...

Not sure where to put this, but adding a "x" and a "y" button would not produce a SNES controller.

The SNES controller has shoulder buttons as well.

Also I'm not entirely sure that "A" and "a" are separate inputs.  They may be the same button as someone has mentioned.

Edit: a x and y... nice... that's not confusing in the least. changed.

I think by adding another trigger beneath an a,b,x,y layout would create functionality for SNES games.  They'd have to change the design a little bit for comfort purposes.

Is there even a point when you can just use the Rev Shell?

I agree with Bill, I think you would use the shell for traditional control of the previous consoles (well except the NES which would work with the current)  I was actually trying to quiet all the criers of "add 2 more buttons, perfect for SNES!"

Yeah, plus the main controller needs to be kept as clean and clutter free as possible so it doesn't scare people away.

There is a point.  I'm assuming the Rev shell will be similar to the standard dual analog style of controls everyone knows about.  Remember how much everyone loved the Hori pad only released in Japan?  If they give the wand that feel people will be happy.  It will make the classic games feel better.

I think they need to take what they have now... and make it an snes controller on its side.  You could still put the shoulder buttons on.  I don't think they would get in the way when holding it vertically.

Man, I'm starting to whine like Ian, but I want to emphasize that I still love the controller.  I'm just still allowed to have a wishlist of what I hope will be changed before launch.

It will be X and Y on the final version for sure. IGN stated that the one Iwata was holding up said X and Y.

Ok, now, some of you seem to want a SNES style button configuration on the botton, likley for playing the SNES games.  But still, you dont have L or R...

Well I mentioned specifically adding the L and R as well.  I don't think they would get in the way.
