Super Monkey Ball DS
« on: September 07, 2005, 06:26:42 AM »
Supposedly Famitsu has confirmed that it will be shown at TGS.  At least that's what the PA boards are saying.  Sadly, the only link I can find saying anything similar is at Spong... bleh...

Anyway, could this be the first game to make use of a GBA slotted gyro for tilt control?  Could this be the first 3rd party game unveiled for the Nintendo WiFi connection?

God I hope so.  I'm a Monkey Ball fiend and actually having gyro control will take it to the next level.  That said, if they don't have gyro control and I'm forced to use digital like in Monkey Ball Jr.... I'll be sad.

Here's a scan

Looks really nice, stylus controls should be really good for this, and it looks like there's going to be brand new touch screen mini games!

The Ultimate Brain/Card games were the first, weren't they? And at E3 Nintendo showed many 3rd parties that had jumped on the bandwagon.

Anyway, yea, this would be great. And the scans look really good too. I'll keep an eye on it.

Hmm, so stylus for analog controls instead of gyro?  That kind of bums me out.  I mean, I guess it may be cool, but I don't know how convincing using a stylus on a 2d plain to move something in 3d will be...

Edit: and yeah, I know Ninty has said that third parties were on board.... what I meant was, will this be the first third party game we actually see/play that uses it....

According to IGN it's 60% complete and set to be released in Japan in December. How long do you think it will be before the english localization is complete and the monkeys are released in North America?

It's funny because I almost bought Super Monkey Ball, Jr. yesterday, just so I could play it on the go on my DS. I'm glad I didn't.

How much localization is a game like that liable to need anyhow? Just menus and whatnot pretty much, right?

The Gyration pack for the GBA only picks up left-right movement, while Super Monkey Ball requires some sort of three dimensional control mechanism like the joystick.  The gyration pack would be, like, huge in order to achieve this .  Either that, or the ball would automatically roll down a hill and you'd only have to steer it.  Or you would use the control pad to move fowards and backwards, and the tilt sensor to move left and right, but that would be extremely awkward.

So touch control it is!

First video! I must say it looks amazing, they've done a good job. I'm almost sold on that air hockey minigame alone, however I need to find out how it controls first, I hope it's as precise as the GCN stick, I can't really imagine how it'll work with the stylus though... was this game playable at TGS? If so, are there any impressions?

Yeah, IGN had some impressions of it at TGS, they didn't like the controls.

IGN's impressions are stupid (as usual), they didn't even play the main game, yet they complained about it "not feeling like monkey ball". The mini games aren't SUPPOSED to feel like Monkey Ball, morons. They're what you play when you want a break from the main game. I have no idea how they could make air hockey feel monkeyballish, god I hate IGN.

Cool. Definetley looks like a return to form after the disapointing Super Monkey Ball 2.

Though it looks like there's no way I could play this thing on any sort of moving vechile without throwing up....

I liked Monkey Ball 2!  Especially the story mode, not the story itself (although it was entertainingly bad) but they way you had 10 floors that you had to beat before you could go to the next level and you had infinate lives.

I disliked that in Super Monkey Ball 2, it was more about chance than skill in the later levels.  They gave you infinite lives because otherwise it would be damn near impossible.

The worst part about Super Monkey Ball 2, was how difficult it was to unlock the mini games.  You had to play those stupid levels OVER and OVER again...and it was all about luck...not skill.

Super Monkey Ball you were atleast able to get through the hard levels with practice.  Monkey Ball 2 screwed the balance up severly...and added that stupid story mode.

In fact, Monkey Ball 2 has made me desire the franchise even less.  I just don't care about the series anymore.

Right. The game was annoying because it was based around you having infininte lives....so you had levels that, instead of being arcady and fun, were nightmares that you had to try over and over and over again....not because you made yourself fall off the course, but because the level requires you to finickle with the ball so that it's lined up just right with the mechanics in that level....ugg....

Though perhaps I should give more credict to the devs for making something that a) had sometimes insanely imaginitve levels, and b) wasn't a cookie cutter sequel. I mean, it wasn't horrible in the way that, say, the knuckles levels in SA:2 were.....
