DS Support from Rare Confirmed!
« on: July 07, 2005, 09:06:14 AM »
According to their "Join Us" section, they're looking to start up DS development.

After Rare was bought by Microsoft in 2002, many thought it was the end of their relationship with Nintendo. Fortunately, Rare still releases portable titles, such as Banjo Pilot and It's Mr. Pants. Up until this point, though, no one was completely sure if Rare would support Nintendo's newest handheld, the DS.

Well, now we know. Recently, Rareware.com updated their "Join Us" section with two want ads:

  GAMES PROGRAMMERS (NINTENDO DS)
Must be motivated, enthusiastic and skilled in C/C++ to join our dedicated handheld team, recently nominated for a Develop Industry Excellence Award. 3D skills also an advantage in creating high-profile titles for this unique system.

EXPERIENCED 3D ARTISTS (NINTENDO DS)
Good understanding of 3D packages (preferably Maya), strong modelling and texturing abilities, imagination and motivation are all required from anyone hoping to join our Develop award-nominated team in creating key DS titles.

Of course, the question still remains: will the DS serve as a port machine for Rare's earlier classics or will they use the platform for all-new games? Only time will tell.

And thanks to BlackNMild2k1 for giving us the heads-up on this one!

I am Karl Castaneda's news-posting clone, also known as Karl Castaneda #2. I have an inferiority complex, thanks to my being a clone. Fear me!

If you were qualified for this you'd probably be looking for this at Gamasutra instead .

Well, we'll see how they did five years from now.

At the very least, I'll take Perfect Dark or Goldeneye with a few more levels, and online multiplayer. More FPS's for the DS would hopefully show developers who can make those games that they would work perfectly on the DS. How is there only two FPS's on a system that's almost perfect for them? And the only one released now sucks!

I'll take thepoga's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark On-line idea and raise it with a Conker BFD, Jet Force Gemini, and the Banjo Series.  They can also port Donkey Kong 64 and maybe do it right this time.

Peace Out!

I hate to shoot people back to earth, but its better to this now than later.

EA owns the James Bond franchise, so unless EA/Rare/Nintendo work something out, its doubtful. See also the recently released Rogue Agent for the DS (Its not fit to even call this a Goldeneye title...) for further proof.

Perfect Dark is shaping up to be the 360's flagship title along with Gears of war. PD on both Nintendo and Microsoft's systems? C'mon....

Porting the past titles may sound nice, but it feels lazy. The DS shouldn't be a dumping ground of ports; the GBA has that base well covered. They've got some interesting tools and features to play with.

EDIT: deleted nonsensical paragraph.

Woo Hoo, I got mentioned on a front page news story!!! yay for me!!

I mentioned this in the other thread, but I will repeat it here too.
It was rumored that Rare was playing around with a DS dev kit a while ago, and that they also had a few playable levels up & running from PD.  I heard that this may have also been seen/heard at E3 this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw PD0 on the DS. Remember the rumors about the DS and PSP hooking up to the Xbox 360 to play Microsoft games online or some other connectivety thing?

while PD and Conker would be nice... I think the game best suited for the DS control scheme and niche genre appeal is Blast Corps. That's one of my favorite N64 titles and the idea of doing spin outs in the dump truck with touch screen control sounds amazing to me...

I believe MS said a while back that they would rather support the DS over the PSP since they see Sony as their main competitor...

And besides, according to Gates, Nintendo is a "niche" company.  We can't be any good competition for him

Also developing for the PSP is more expensive and I don't think they're going to blow ten million on some "minor" product.

Developers better get a clue that the DS isnt a port machine. Mario worked out great and everything due to the simple textures and big atmosphere but more advanced ports like Rayman end up discraceful.

Being that Rare really made the best looking titles for the N64, a Conker or JetForce Gemini port would sound appetizing but would be disastrous. Its a must that developers make the game compatible with the DS playfield. Like Joeposh said, something like Blast corps would really be an ideal port for DS.

Basically, the DS is not the GBA where you can easily port nes, snes titles at a blink of an eye. it just doesnt work in 3d.

I believe an FPS could work out extremely well on the DS, and I really don't see how Perfect Dark on Nintendo DS "competes" with Perfect Dark on Xbox 360 in any way whatsoever.   Two totally different systems.

While Rare has botched up it's Xbox projects, I really enjoyed Sabre Wulf and It's Mr. Pants on Gameboy, so I'm happy to hear this.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I realize that you are taking about ports, but you make is sound as if 3D sux on DS and shouldn't be attempted unless its something that is simple.

Tak a look @ this and tell me that the DS isn't capable if you put in a little more effort:
Look at the Tak 3 trailer but forgive the compression (and my pun in the last sentence ). This should raise the bar on what to expect from a 3D game on DS.  Remember that the DS is slightly more powerful than an N64, so the highest quality of N64 gaming should be expected at the least.
