Tales of Symphonia is the best RPG on the Gamecube. Hands down, I was hooked on the game when I first got it and beat it twice in a row (which is a huge chunk of time, considering how long it takes to get through the game). Baten Kaitos is another great one, although if you despise CCG based RPGs you should probably look elsewhere.

FF:CC and Four Swords Adventures are primarily multiplayer games.

Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, Paper Mario, and Skies of Arcadia are the best RPGs on the Cube. Skies is expensive. The other three are cheap.

If you want every RPG on the Cube, you can't forget about Evolution Worlds...

Phantasy Star Online Ep. I & II has tons of replay value. But if you want a more story driven RPG, Tales of Symphonia is the one.

Skies is uber rare.  Back when i bought mine a year ago, I paid 60 bucks for it.  It's only becoming harder to find now.

I would reccomend, in order, Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia, and Paper Mario.  Evolution Worlds is a passable dungeon hack, but that gets tedious after 20 hours.

I suppose I would reccomend Baten Kaitos too...but I'm stuck on a hard boss at the moment, and don't have much love for the game right now.

By all means stay the hell away from Final Fantasy Cystal Cronicals. Its lame and its not really an RPG.

I recently finished Baten Kaitos after 76 hours of gameplay and can recommend it, though its not the best RPG in the world.

Skies Of Acadia is also good. And its not rare. Frys Electronics in Northern California has about 20 of them in stock for 19.99.

But trust us.  Tales of Symphonia and Skies of Arcadia -are- the ones you are looking for.

Tales has a cool real-time battle system that plays a little like Super Smash Bros.  You give your teammates basic orders and they carry them out automatically, while you control one character directly yourself.   I actually find it a little overwhelming but it's way faster and (for some people) more fun than traditional RPG battles once you get the hang of it.

Skies...I never got that far into it, apparently you get to start up a pirate crew later on which sounds cool, but I didn't get to try it.  You do get to fly airships everywhere, and there are actual battles between the airships at times.  The airship battles are fun and different, but I thought they were a little predictable early on in the game.  Aside from the whole airship/pirate aspect, it's a very traditional, but good RPG.  I actually found the story more engaging than Tales, but I haven't played either game more than 1/4 of the way through.

There's also Lost Kingdoms I and II, which aren't the best RPGs on the system, but the series does have fans.  I haven't played it, you're still better off with the other two I'd say.  Just felt like being a completist.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I completley forgot about Lost Kingdoms!  heh.

Shows how much of an impression they left on me.
===

Another good thing about Tales is that you can have your friends control the other characters, and the game really shines when you have four people all working together to beat a tough boss.

Skies was just the best RPG for the Dreamcast, which is the version I beat.  I'm only halfway through the Gamecube version...but the Ship battles are an interesting mechanic, and...while it doesn't have anything that really sticks out, it combines the best of most modern RPG's into a solid, fun, challenging adventure thats better than the sum of it's parts.

And Belleza is hot.

Tales and Skies, by far, are the best on the Cube.  In fact, those two and Golden Sun are my favorite RPGs of all time.

The battle system in Tales makes the purchase immediatley worth it.  It's not turn-based at all- you control one character, and you target one enemy and attack on a 2D plane.  Different button combinations perform different moves.  Everything is pretty much customizable, including the different strategies your team mates use (for instance, you can set one person to attack from a distance, to attack the enemy attacking your weakest team mate, and to attack only usuing magic until his/her mp is down to 1/4).  You can also tell your team mates to do a certain move at any time, so you still have control over them. It's awesome.

Skies has a more traditional battle system, but it still has a few unique inclusions such as spirit points.  I don't want to go into a ton of detail, but there are a lot of different things to try out while fighting.  I'm not the biggest fan of turn-based battling, but something about Skies makes it exciting and actually FUN.  Plus, it's pirate themed, so it's automaticaly cool.  There are quite a number of things to do outside of the story, such as finding discoveries and defeating other famous air pirates (for a reward, of course).

Both adventures are pretty lengthy, and you'll probably get over 100 hours out of those two combined.

Between those two?

Tales of Symphonia, definetly.  FF:CC is best as a multiplayer game, so if you have the prerequisite friends with GBA's, then you're golden...

But I reiterate.  Just buy Tales of Symphonia.  It's a must have for the Gamceube.

Other than the battle system, Tales is pretty much standard RPG fare.  You have weapons, armor, items, etc all of which you can hold a certain amount of (I think 20 is the limit for most things).  There's also food-  you can put together ingredients to form dishes that act as cheap substitutes to potions and the such.  There's an overworld, and towns, and dungeons, and other things you'd expect to find in an RPG.  Tales gets extra points for being absolutley beautiful and for having a few nice anime cutscenes.

Is there variation in weapons and armor like say i buy an axe will it look just like some super rare axe that took me forever to find?  Will my store bought armor look the same as super rare armor?

Weapons yes, each weapon has it's own unique look.  You get the ultra rare type weapon, and you're gonna see your character using it.

As for armor, no.  There -are- different costumes you can get for each character, though.  My favorite are Lloyds "Beach Bum" and the "Arr, me hearties."

And the only fanservice in the entire game is Sheena's bathing suit costume.  Or Zelos's, for the ladies.

Armor, specifically, does not affect appearance.  Your characters maintain an overall "costume" so to speak.  Bonus costumes (extras for fun) can be acquired.  The armor designs are generally modest and avoid "shiny metallic wow-factor" (probably since you won't see them on your character anyway).  Of course, the rare/later armors have nice protective attributes, so "function" comes before "form."

Weapons, gauntlets, and shields are clearly shown, however, with weapons all having unique designs (plus attributes).
