Well well well, after trolling around all the possible blogs, imageboards, and forums out there, i've decided to participate in this Revolution fiasco.

My primary source of rumours and theories come from here:

It's a blog of Revolution discussions mostly centred on the enigmatic "Aries". He claims to know the low-downs of the Rev and drops hints on what's to come.

First, the most interesting, and most POSSIBLE hypothesis worth mentioning is the new Rev's storage medium. Remember how Nintendo's comments were recalled about being able to play "DVDs" and switched to "12 cm discs"? It is called the "Holographic Verstile Disc" capable of storing a ridiculous amount of data (up to 1 Terrabyte or more.) It makes BluRay medium look like old technology. Makes you wonder why they changed the phrasing of their comments, eh?

Current disc readers have motors that spin the disc at high speeds and lenses that read them. HVD, on the other hand, uses the opposite and makes the the lens rotate around the disc for optimum read time.

Now think abou the console's name, "Revolution." This has a few meanings, but here are the key ones: 1) A sudden or momentous change in a situation (a la French Revolution); 2) A turning or rotational motion about an axis. Everyone is expecting the former, but how about the latter? Does it sound like something i just mentioned above?

From the blog above, posters hypothesized that this coincides with Nintendo's recent patents of "Holographic". Of course when you think holographic, you think of a 3d projection and not any way shape or form, a 2-dimensional disc.

Nevertheless, this hypothesis has the greatest chance of holding true because of the patent, the recalled statement of "DVDs" AND the name of the console, "Revolution."

Any thoughts, comments, or hypotheses are welcome.

No. Would that kind of reader even fit in a case that small? How would it read GC discs?

It's a pipe dream. I refuse to believe it.

Sounds cool, but unfortanately nintendo are cheapskates and are very slow at picking up new technology.

The idea of a separate device to play DVD MOVIES supports your theory: the 'revolving' Rev lens reader is not able to read normal dvd's...

What, is the attachment supposed to be another disc drive?

And how would that reader read GC discs?

Yes.... a media that has rougly 500 times more capacity for a system with 2 to 3 times more power.

Sounds cool, but one, as Paladin said, it wouldn't be able to read GC discs (at least, I don't think it would), and while I hardly agree with Pug, Nintendo does tend to avoid brand new technologies to keep costs down for the consumers.

Unless they found a way to create and mass produce a groundbreaking media format cheaply and small enough to fit into the smallest home console Nintendo has ever built...

I call BS.

btw...that Ares guy sure was throwing around alot of predictions...how many of them have come true so far?

I don't think HVD will be stable enough to use and cheap enough to mass manufacture for at least another 5 years. Companies work on new formats all the time, but they either never come out, never make it mainstream or are apart of a larger cycle where you won't see them until after the next big format. Right now that's Blu-ray/HD-DVD. By the time both DVD and the hi def format die off (which will be a LONG TIME), HVD will either be ready to go or a distant memory in the face of HVD2 which holds 20 billion terrabytes (that's made up btw).

Never happening.

Bull sh!t. Making a laser that's spinning is much harder to do than a disk, a laser that is spinning instead of a disk at a high speed and is moving up down the disk at the same time it would cause huge strain from the acceleration forces acting on the laser equipment and can't be done with the equipment having any long lifetime of use (unless it was made for a PS n+1 system) and how fast the disk is spinning doesn't related to how much data a disk can hold just how fast it's read.

I have no idea what that entry is trying to say. However, I must say Nintendo really dodged a bullet by not going with the "Revolution" name; it would've built up expectations way too high, something that "Wii" would never be in danger of doing.

Quite interesting. I remember reading an article about holographic storage in an old issue of Popular Science, way back around 94. I always wondered if anything would ever come of the idea.

i want a real life Star Trek: Next Generation holodeck. I want to have sex with women made of light. I want to not know if I'm in or out of the holodeck because graphics are more equal to if not better than reality because of the new 512 Googolbytes of RAM it has and can process 1 Trillion Yottabytes per millisecond.
