Here's Iwata's quote:
"It is accurate to say that Nintendo Revolution is capable of playing virtually every Nintendo console game ever created."

Note two important distinctions - "Virtually" and "Nintendo".  That could mean separate third-party agreements, some which won't go through, unfortunately... but my top A-list game is likely not going to make the cut.  Poor, poor Duck Hunt.

Yeah, they HAVE to get those rights. They can't just say "you released it on our system so now your IP is ours", that's no better than throwing warez on a website.

I'd probably get a few cheap top NES games just to laugh at how bad games were back then while people still call them the best games ever.

For those fearing the price remember this.  Nintendo was charging 20 dollars for the NES classics, because they still had to package the game game and put it on a cartridge and send the games to stores and distributors.  It is expensive.

Now Nintendo can give you these games at a fraction of the cost.  They simply have you buy the SD card and download away.

I am going to have to have a 512SD card for NES/SNES games I want
and
I am going to have to have a 1GIG card for all the N64 games I will want to get.

Also, Nintendo will still have to get the rights to publish the games in this manner.  As it is, unless Nintendo PUBLISHED the games themselves they don't have rights to republish them.  Also liscensed games like Ninja Turtles, may not have the right to use the liscense anymore, so those games may be out of pocket as well.

As for getting 3rd parties onboard.  All Nintendo has to say is we will not charge your for the server and will give you 90-100% of the prophet.  I mean after all its not like the 3rd parties actually have to DO anything to release the games.

If playing The Revolution on-line is totally free of any charges, how in the world can they make money other than charging for DL content?
$0.99 or 15 for $9.99(NES)
$1.49 or 10 for $9.99(SNES)
$2.49 or  7  for $9.99(N64)

The pre-paid download card idea works nice as well.  They will make a killing off my cicrle of friends alone of N64 wrestling games and Mario Bros All-Stars. Since we're dreaming here, could they also do soundtracks as well. I need the music from the first contra really, really bad.

The only one that I want that hasn't already been said:  Bad Dudes (NES).  This way, I can frame my original copy.  The president has been kidnapped by ninjas.  Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?  Greatest storyline ever.

I'm a little sad that this means all my old collectable games would be practically worthless.  I always knew that if it came down to it, I could sell my copy of Chrono Trigger for sixty bucks.  No more.  Sadness.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

if we look at Apple's 99 cents for a 4-5 MB download we get a pretty good idea of what it costs per MB to deliver content. NES games are WAY smaller than this, the cost would be almost nothing.

to me, a 3 minute song isn't worth nearly as much as a game I can play for hours, regardless of megabytes.
I'd say $3-5 would be a good range for NES/SNES games. Maybe as low as $2.50 for especially short games. Maybe as high as $10 for games like ALTTP. $10-15 for N64 games. That's still dirt cheap compared to what you'd have to pay to buy them used or on gameboy.

Right, but a lot of us already own the games. i've got 70-80 NES carts. If they're a quarter a pop, I'd happily pay the $20 to be able to use them all on the Rev, since my NES consoles are all shot. OTOH, if they're $5 each, its much cheaper for me to buy a used top-loader off eBay than shell out $400. At $5 a pop, I might buy Dragon Warrior 3, and maybe Genghis Khan but that's probably it. By raising their prices they lower their revenue, at least in this case.

To make me happy, they either need a low price point or a "unlimited downloads" subscription model that doesn't cost a fortune ($5-$10 a month).

Yes it would be the third parties that would have to put their old games up for download, but in all reality it would be in their best interest.  The ability to make money off a game that they have made no money off of for say 15 years or more.  I expect to see a ton of third party games available.

And I too already own every Nintendo system, and many games for each, yet I would still download more games than I could possibly play probably.  The convenience of playing them all on one system.  Forget the clutter of having my N64, SNES, NES, and Gamecube all hooked up.  Just my revolution and and a couple SD cards full of old school gaming goodness.  Not to mention the fact all those old consoles, and carts,  will eventually bite the dust, more than likely before Revolution.  Plus the ability to get hard to find, and nie on impossible to find games makes me happy.  As a lover of old RPG's, some of the hardest, and most expensive, to find, the proposition is very enticing.

And what a way to fight illegal emulation.

My first download would be Metal Gear, even though I already own it.

I, too, expect to see a great number of third-party developers and publishers on this bandwagon.  But I also expect to see some crippling one missing.  For instance, Square-Enix may decide that re-releasing their games with new content themselves is more profittable. (a la FF Chronicles, say)

For example - look at Disney, the champions of re-releasing.  Every ten years "the vault opens" on a Disney Masterpiece, on a new medium or with extra features - and it's available for a while, then off market.  Repeat.  With a game library like Square-Enix's, why would they suddenly flood the online market with their own titles?  Release one or two at a time, as that way they don't compete with eachother.  Then take them offline.

It's crappy for gamers, good for business.

Oh, and R.B.I. Baseball II for the NES.

Interesting tidbits from Iwata. Apparently he's said:
a) Nintendo is in talks with third party developers to get their retro games.
b) Nintendo hasn't decided whether they want to charge users per game as they download, or sell prepaid cards in stores. (personally, I'd like both)
This from gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/20/news_6126195.html), who got it from a reuters story.

Well, Nintendo needs to find a balance. I think a quarter is just way too low for someone like me, who has never owned an news or an snes. My prices were probably too high for the many who already own a lot of these games.
And I know I really shouldn't be arguing for higher prices....but, c'mon, a quarter for super mario bros? a quarter for zelda?

I also never owned a snes, but I always played with my cousin's. What about the awesome idea Ive seen in other forums that Nintendo makes an agreement with Sega and let their consoles' games also be available for download? that could very well make the Rev incstantly the best console ever.

Ill most likely get all the classics, since my old family is long gone because I gave it away to another cousin as a gift when I got my N64 I cant regret it anymore, trust me

There's probably no good reason not to license Genesis content if they can. Anything after that is probably too big to reasonably download since Sega was such an early adopter of the CD. Unfortunately that affords us damned little in good new content since most of the good Genesis titles wound up in Cube compilations or GBA carts

Golden Axe? However, I will agree, by in large there aren't a great deal of quality titles for the Genesis that don't feature Sonic or didn't also end up on the SNES.

Well I hope Nintendo makes an agreement with most of the larger third parties to make their games available. I mean, the first party games are great -- I'd buy it for those alone -- but I'd love to play Chrono Trigger and some of the Final Fantsy games as well. Because the third parties won't lose anything, I could see Nintendo making an agreement with the rest of the Big 5. They're close to Namco already, SE has been hinting that they'll work with them, Capcom is open to deals, and Konami might not do it but that doesn't really matter. Unless they really overprice the games or something, I'm sold on the revolution already.

I had a wonderful idea! =o

How does this sound?  You buy a(n?) NES or SNES game on the Rev.  You're playing it.  Having fun.  Oh no!  You're going to grandma's, but you really want to continue your game of Adventures of Link.  So you wireless connect your DS to the Rev and you download the game and store it in the DS.  You play it on the way, and let it sleep on the way back.  You upload the game back to your Rev and save.

What's this?  You're caught up in a game of Super Metroid?  But it's time to go on vacation?!  OH NO?!??!  Never fear!  The Rev saves its games to a flash cart.  You stick it in your DS and play.  You can save your game, turn the system off, play some more.  WHATEVER.  YOU'VE GOT THE CART.

I don't know if any of that would be possible, but it would kick ass.  I don't know how much internal memory the DS has, but it'd be enough to hold at least the biggest NES game.  Not sure about SNES though.

If the GBA can hold NES games, then the DS can hold them.
