Nintendogs Perfect in Famitsu
« on: April 26, 2005, 05:23:35 PM »
It's almost impossible to not give the game perfect scores when it gives you that "sad puppy eyes" look.

Weekly Famitsu, Japan's most popular game magazine, recently reviewed Nintendo's puppy simulator, Nintendogs.  The magazine's review section is notorious for being tough, as four reviewers with different tastes each look at a game, then give a score out of 10.

Well, the four reviewers looked at the game, and each of them gave it a 10, earning it a perfect 40/40 score.  Getting a 40 from Famitsu is extremely rare, making it a score that only extremely good games get.  Apparently, this makes Nintendogs a must-own title in the eyes of Famitsu.

Hopefully, America will see it as a must-own too, when Nintendogs comes over here by year's end, most likely.  At E3, we'll see what Nintendo does to the game for the English localization, and hopefully it will retain its perfect qualities.

Thanks to Mario in the PGC Forums for the heads up!

You guys should mention in the article exactly which games have gotten that coveted score in the past to give a better idea of the importance behind this.

Bill, that avatar is awesome.  LOVE the happy cat.

This was totally unexpected for me.  Nintendogs really must be a brilliant game.  I read the IGN preview and it was mostly positive, but not indicative of something that would get awarded a perfect score by Famitsu.  I mean, Pokemon didn't even get a score that high!  Could this be the straight-out-of-left-field killer app the DS has been looking for?

Is a translation of the review comments available anywhere?

Not to be negative towards this great news, but....I feel noone will care besides those dedicated few.

However in Japan, I feel like this might be a huge hit.

I have showed Nintendogs screenshots, video, and stories to many of my non-hardcore gamer friends, and many of them now want to play the game. Seems to me like the game could very well be a hit in the States, no matter what the hardcore gaming fanatics may think they know about the marketplace.

Its a Japanese mag (and the scan I saw was really hard to read any comments, let alone translate from Japanese). gamefront.de had a scan of it.

Indeed it has *looks at own sig* and its gone up 450-odd posts in 24 hours. Things like this kinda sum up GAF

Getting a 40 from a Famitsu is like asking four retards to pick their favorite shiny object from a pile -- a nickel with OMG PUPPIES on it is sure to have their hamfists flapping for it over all the others.

Here's your grain of salt, internet.

I really think the game is going to be very cool and all but i don't think the game could be GREAT.  I wonder if this game has more depth than i thought it would have.  I was already planing on getting it but now im looking forward to knowing some more juicy details!

I feel you guys on the unexpected audience tip.  My girl is sooooo convinced that she will not like this game, as bad as she wants a freaking puppy.  This'll show her......you guys have any handy links of video footage to post?

I wonder what other Japanese publications have given the title.  If it's not just a fluke, then other reviewers must have loved it as well.  I was critical of this game, but from what I've read now on PGC and IGN, I'll be dropping some cash for my own Nintendog.

I had zero interest in this game before, but now that it got a perfect score from some Japanese magazine, my pre-order has been placed!

This game dever appealed to me, because I've, you know, got a real dog to take care of... but with these ratings, I may have to at least rent it.
That's my opinion, not yours.

It seems Nintendo is serious about expanding the demographic, good for them. Despite the high scores and all, I don't think it will NECESSARILY impress everyone, just as a fantastic comedy movie will not necessarily entertain a horror fan. It would sure expand Nintendo's reach, however.

You know, I always find it funny how it feels that the whole world is made up of hardcore gamers and gadget lovers, when on the internet. In reality, we only make up a small fraction. If Nintendo manages to satisfy the general public, they WILL have bigger customer base than the hardcore fan base on its own. It feels wrong, but numerically that's how it works out. I can't help but feel that Doom Callers of nintendo often consider hardcore scene to be the entire world, and forget the real world.

I partially agree, although there are a lot of people who just don't give Nintendo much of a mindshare at all.

I will agree that this applies to online gaming, though, as the fraction of gamers that use such a service is very small, while it tends to be one of the most whined about aspects of forums and what not (not a huge surprise, I suppose).
