Skies of Arcadia Legends = Great Game
« on: February 16, 2003, 02:53:04 PM »
Skies of Arcadia Legends is a fantastic RPG that has really fulfilled my hunger for the GameCube right now. Everyone has begged for more RPG's, but to get more from at least Sega, we need to show support for this game. Now, I know that this is a port, but let's still get the word out and make this a good seller. I would really like to see other companies support the GameCube with more RPGs, and this is one of the places to start. Sega has already said publicly that a sequel will be determined on whether this game sells well. That information I remember seeing on www.planetgamecube.com. Let's show some support! Thanks

I wouldn't worry. Just look at the GCN track record. It shows over and over again that good games sell on GameCube, and bad games flop (with just a couple exceptions ***Eternal Darkness***) Eternal darknesss, btw, still sold better than, for instance, Burnout.

I'm currently at 50 hours (don't know how many hours i beat it in) And i played it since i woke up (around 8:00) to the time i went to bed (around 11:00). It took me about 7 days to beat it, though i didn't play much on the first day (my "real" life got in the way). All i have left to do is get all the discoveries and one other thing that doesn't come to mind.

This game is in my top 5. And I played alot of AAA games.

I appreciate your effort, but I have been trying to buy the game for the longest time.  (I think I got that covered now though), and I haven't been able to find a copy to buy.  Most online sites are also backordered all to hell.  I would say that the game has been a stunning success on GameCube, but hampered by a lack of availability.  Hopefully it showed Sega that they seriously miscalculated demand anyways.

Anyways, if they do make a sequel, I hope that they make it's availability a little better.

Strange that they would miscalculate it so much after putting all the effort they did into porting it, etc.  They must have thought it would sell well or they wouldn't have bothered.  Anyway, it's great to hear you guys like this game--I have it for the Dreamcast and it's just brilliant--and all the reviews of the port seem to either basically "get it" or vastly underrate its value.

As for a lack of availability, it's not that I doubt you Grey Ninja, just that I haven't seen that myself since it's in every store from Best Buy to Babbages to EB here in Knoxville, TN.  Too bad you can't find it, but surely online sites have it somewhere!

Man, I dunno...

I'm not to appealed by this game but I've been longing for an RPG.

The main character looks pretty lame to me, and sky pirates?  bleh.  I keep hearing good things about this, got plenty of pretty good reviews also.  But I just can't force myself to buy on gameplay alone.. the look of it just turns me away.

Sc.... whatever your name is.

It actually looks really good in action.  If you need something to convince you to get it, then, I'll help you with that.

It's addictive.  Its an RPG that just keeps sucking you in... plus, all the special moves are really cool.  And every development in the plot brings something new and interesting with it.  It's very plot-driven, which is a good thing in this context.  ...why don't you rent it?  Then you'll see if you like it or not.  Just don't judge until you get to Valua the first time... it kind of picks up there.

Sky, from what I hear, Sega lost a lot on Skies in general (on Dreamcast, I mean--it didn't sell well at all from what I think I know), and it would've been MUCH worse if they pretended that it would be a huge blockbuster on GameCube because it would've been THAT MANY MORE copies of Skies sitting on store shelves.  Sega's doing the right thing but sending them out to meet demand (or sending too few to create more demand...haha).  They were burned once, badly.

I'm about halfway through, I think, and I'm still enjoying it.  There are some times when I get bored with it (like when I'm searching for an important discover but just can't find it and I keep getting attacked, which is when the white map really comes in handy (I love how you can completely swap your equipped gear during battle!)), but overall I think it's great.  There are some cheezy parts, and some parts that are like "hmm, wonder where they got that idea," but it's certainly an entertaining story and they do a good job of keeping it serious without being boring.  The characters are light-hearted and the fun-loving air-pirate thing really works well.  As in, the characters actually smile and make fun of each other (which is desperately needed in RPG, in my opinion).

The graphics are bumped up on the main characters, and it shows -- when you see a character that's not very important to the game, you can tell that they were simply a texture placed over a basic polygon shape.  But the main characters look great and, really, they're the most important graphics in games like this anyway.  Many of the boss characters look fantastic too (like the steelskin spell? whoa!), and since those are the long battles anyway, it's really a nice touch.  I'm happy they were smart about which graphics they improved, rather than spending years retooling the entire game.

So the battles look good, and the bosses look good, and the main characters look good, but the towns and secondary characters don't look so good.  They're not Ocarina of Time bad, but they're not SFA good, either.

I heard that they sold out pretty badly on their first shipment cause they limited demand.

Also remember that the original Skies of Arcadia was a low budget game from Sega, that's why they didn't have too much confidence in its sails.

The low budget part I know is true, the rest is what I've heard.

Some truly great things come from low budget projects.  Xenogears, Star Wars, Final Fantasy 1, and so many others...  It's actually quite surprising.

It'd be cool if Skies of Arcadia Legends sell so well it sorta becomes a franchise for the Gamecube.
Anyone know when this game is released in Australia?

I didn't have any trouble finding a copy and neither did my brother, I got one at a local Sam Goody (in a small town), and I'm not really sure where my brother got his but he didn't have any trouble.  I wonder where you live, I guess some places must've gotten more copies than others.  It's a really great game either way and you certainly shouldn't give up looking for a copy.

Edit:

oh and syther, or whatever your name is, GAMEPLAY is what your bying, not the looks or anything else, people who buy just for the look or whatever else kinda bother me, I guess it's cause I've been playing since the Atari days when resolutions were so low that pixels were the size of a house that graphics and sound don't bother me alot, but seriously you buy a game to play it not to look at it.   Well I guess it's your opinion, but if your afraid of looking uncool 'cause you play a game that doesn't look cool, then you'll really miss out on alot of good games.  Plus I kinda like the way everything looks (I didn't at first, but I do now plus:

Note to Scyth3r: Why not rent it?  If you're hurting for an RPG, you only have a few dollars to lose, and if it's as good as everyone here claims maybe you'll change your mind.

Anyway, this is just another reason why I need a job!  So I guess I should stop posting and start hunting.

Same here, CouchMonkey!  Hahaha...I can't imagine being disappointed if you MUST have an RPG (by buying Skies, I mean).  It's really a solid RPG even to the strictest of critics, and many, many of us think it's just fabulous.  So, if you're really hard-up (so to speak), rent and buy.  Good advice, Couch.

Chris150 And who told you it sold bad on DC, this game was a miracle actually
because there was zero advertising and this game is not a franshise it was a strange name, it sold
250,000 full price Japan
I heard it reached 300,000 after price drop
100,000 full price US  a few 10s thousends after price drop
and remember that DC Piracy was so easy no mod chip needed
