I cancelled my PSP preorder today
« on: March 08, 2005, 10:09:04 AM »
On a whim I had preordered a PSP bundle from Gamestop.  I grabbed the Silver pack (PSP, Untold Legends, Metal Gear Acid and Spiderman 2 on UMD) for a grand total of $414.45 after shipping.

Today I cancelled my order.

Why?  Because $400 is a LOT of money.  I looked at it and said, you know, it makes no sense that I'm willing to drop 400 big ones on another console I don't really need (or have time to play) when I have more important things to spend that money on.  This is kinda big for me - typically I buy new consoles like a crack addict buying jumbos, but not this time.  Even if I preordered the PSP for $250 I would have cancelled...that's too much money for something I'll play only some of the time.  I already have my DS, and by Christmas I'll be fully occupied with that I'm sure.

The DS and PSP are, for most, going to be mutually exclusive.  People will either buy one or the other.  I don't think there's many gamers out there willing to spend $550-plus to own two handheld systems.  I'm hardcore so I'll buy one at some point, but that point isn't right now.

With handhelds it seems wierd to own two.  I mean, will you take both on the road? If thats the case that just defeats the purpose.  Any and all intrest I had on the PSP was sqaushed when they announced the price.  The same goes for one of my friends, who is now debating over a DS since he can't afford the PSP.

And wow, a $400 dollar bundle, couldn't you get all three consoles with that sort of money.  If I had that kind of cash a PSP would be the last thing on my mind.
It may be simple, but it ain't easy.

I may get both but right now, the DS is just fine for me. I will wait until the PSP get a serious price drop.

Hoorah!

Sony would have to pull some crazy cool crap now to get me to buy the PSP.  Nothing interests me enough to merit buying one.

Yeah, think about that - for $250, you could buy a PS2 and a GameCube or an XBox and a GameCube.  That's crazy.

Really Toy.  Since you say "paid for" I assumed you preordered it from EB or Gamestop who force you to pay $400 for it.  for that, you could FLY TO E3 Roundtrip, see the new DS games, come home and buy a couple of them.  Of course, that is assumed you lived like a hobo and not stayed in a hotel.

I had both but I sold my PSP on ebay becaus it really wasn't worth my money. Not enough games worth buying.  Sure it has a huge lineup, but not one worth $50 a pop.  I did make back enough money to pratically get Daigasso: Band Brothers and Prince of Tennis for free.

I think the fact that PSP games are $40 - $50 is going to be the bigger factor for a lot of people.  Fewer console games are put out at $50 nowadays than there were five years ago.  I will most likely check out other staffers' PSP games at E3 and wait until I have my credit cards paid off before getting one myself (if at all).

"I think the fact that PSP games are $40 - $50 is going to be the bigger factor for a lot of people."

In Canada that means they'll be $65-70 since that's the usual price EB charges for new console games.  That's really expensive for a portable game.  If a GBA game costs $50 we freak out.  Hell I try not to even buy console games at $70 anymore if I can help it.

I'm more interested in the PSP currently in the sense that based on what each portable offers if I could pick one for free I would pick the PSP.  But the price totally turns me off.  I don't think it will turn off the Playstation fanbase or gadget freaks though.  And realistically Sony can get away with charging this for the launch because early adopters are willing to get ripped off.  I imagine they'll at least drop the game prices after the launch period is over and they have to start selling PSPs to average consumers.

Which PSP games interest you more?  Are they the EA games you hate?  Or the PSOne Ports?

Lumines mostly and just the fact that there are normalish games being made for it.  It's not so much that the PSP is so great it's just that the DS isn't.  Right now I really don't plan on getting either of them, just that if I had to pick and price wasn't an issue I would pick the PSP.

Daigasso. Another. A puzzle game. A music game. An adventure game. That stand out on their own enough, but aren't out in left field altogether. I guess by 'normalish' you mean established brands. Aren't you always complaining about sequels?

"Aren't you always complaining about sequels?"

The key is a balance. Nintendo has to offer traditional gameplay with some innovation but not too much. There's still plenty of room for innovation within the traditional gameplay framework.

I ordered mine at Gamestop and they only charged me 250.00. It comes with the soft case, memory stick, Spiderman 2 the movie, a demo(I think) etc. I didn't even HAVE to buy a game, but obviously I did.

It is doubtful that I will get the PSP anytime soon, I don't know about others but I am someone who feels Handheld games are meant to be unique to their console breathern. A console in portable form is not what I'm looking for!

Sony should really do "an Apple" and make a PSP Mini - Exactly the same as the PSP minus all it's media capabilities, making them all entirely optional add-ons. Then drop the price to something sensible.

However, Sony haven't announced a release date or price in Europe.  And knowing the UK it'll be nicely more expensive than everywhere else.
