Three Different Nintendogs Versions
« on: March 01, 2005, 09:14:15 PM »
Gotta fetch 'em all! UPDATED with clarification on the three versions.

UPDATE 03/12/2005: In an interview with GameSpot at GDC, NOA's Nate Bihldorff gave some clarity on the reason for offering three versions.  It seems that all the breeds are unlockable in each game, but Nintendo is offering different versions so people can have access to their favorite breeds from the start.  Nate also stated that the localization process may involve adding breeds more popular in America and changing some of the optional gear available.

Nintendo Japan has updated its Nintendogs DS website with lots of cute puppy pictures.  Actually, it's confirmation of three different versions of the upcoming puppy-love simulation game.

It appears that each version of the game will have a different types of dogs for users to play around with.  A Dachshund, Chihuahua, and Shiba dog each grace the cover of their respective versions, and the other animals in each version are varied.  Here's a listing which breeds are available in which version, according to the game page:

Dachshund and Friends Version
- Mini Dachshund
- Mini Schnauzer
- Pug
- Yorkshire Terrier
- German Shepherd

Chihuahua and Friends Version
- Chihuahua
- King Charles Spaniel
- Labrador Retriever
- Beagle
- Shihtzu

Shiba and Friends Version
- Shiba
- Mini Pinscher
- Welsh Corgie Puppy
- Shetland Sheepdog
- Toy Poodle

If you want to play with dogs that aren't in the version you have, you can still find someone else with another version and play with their set of dogs.  It's not made clear if new dogs can be acquired via trade from other versions, though.

Nintendogs is set to release in Japan on April 21, and will most likely make an appearance at E3 for us here in North America.

This game is way too cute.  I have no idea how they can make a great game out of this, but I want the game because of the puppies.  ARG.

Yeah, I think the first game has the best puppies, but they did a good job splitting the variety up.

I guess the two versions of Pokemon thing just wasn't ripping people off enough so we're going with three version games.  Why can't Nintendo just be nice and release ONE GAME with all the dogs?  There's no reason to do this other than to screw people over.

Personally I'm a cat guy but I'm sure they'll introduce some kitty version if this catches on (and a bunny version, hamster version, fish version, snake version, tarantula version, etc.)  It should be noted that when I showed my brother a DS preview in a magazine the second he saw this he was like "what the f*ck?  Oh man, does everything Nintendo make have to be so cutesy?"  And he plays Yoshi's Island like every day so he isn't some anti-Nintendo guy or anything.

Ian Sane:  You know they could be trying to rip us off...OR they could of just done alot of puppies and have alot of voice recognition, animation, and such that it takes too much space to put all the puppies into one game.  So they divided it into 3 games.

Corgies are the best, though.

I just wish they had Golden Retriever puppies, those are the best.

And I will definitely be picking at least one of these games up.

I'm so totally getting Chihuahua and Friends Version and you WON'T STOP ME. If they release a cat version, it should be called Garfield and Friends and have a GBA video cartridge included with a few episodes of the cartoon.

(Plz give me money now Nintendo).

This will no doubt bring *GASP* girls out of the proverbial woodwork and slam some cash for a DS.  How could they not buy one after seeing pictures of those cuddly critters?

Once again, nobody is pointing a gun at your head to tell you to buy all three versions.  You have no concept of what a ripoff is.

If all the dogs are unlockable in each version maybe there will be a few other unlockable surprises too. How cool would it be if you could unlock a few non-dog pets like a cat, a pig, or even a YOSHI!!!

Yeah, thinking that Nintendo would create a game which encourages enthusiasts to buy several versions so they can finish it properly is a completely unreasonable assumption. No highly-successful precedent has ever been set for that practice, and the gracious Nintendo would never pertain itself to such an unscrupulous act.

Yeah. They would never trick people into buying two copies of the same game. Especially Pokemon.

Hehe, well I'm really glad they decided on having all the dogs on one game. People wouldn't buy multiple copies, and this way, people can start out with their own experience. I wanna get the green colored box version. That dog is so cool!
