Stars honoring Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario, Link and Sonic will be unveiled on March 8th.

San Francisco's Newest Landmark, Walk of Game, to Induct Six Icons Tuesday, March 8 with 'Star'-Studded Ceremony

Mayor Gavin Newsom to Kick off Ceremonies Honoring Inductees to First-Ever Physical Landmark for the Videogame Industry

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 2005--Tuesday, March 8th, 2005 will mark a historic day in San Francisco as the first six stars are unveiled on the Walk of Game, the first-of-its-kind destination for gamers worldwide. Walk of Game honors the icons and pioneers of the videogame industry, and this year will celebrate Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of "Mario Brothers" and "Donkey Kong") and Nolan Bushnell (co-founder of Atari and "Pong"), in the Lifetime Achievement category, and Halo, Link (The Legend of Zelda), Mario, and Sonic The Hedgehog in the category for favorite Games/Characters. Inductees will be on hand to meet fans and help shape history at this unprecedented inaugural event.

Gamers worldwide are invited to join the festivities at Metreon on March 8th at 5:00 p.m. as live camera feeds deliver dramatic images to the fans gathered on the Ground Floor. At 5:30 p.m., stars will be unveiled on Level 2 to the fanfare of confetti bursts and live music performances by members of G.A.N.G. (Game Audio Network Guild), and entertainment courtesy of gaming shows like "Gamer Nation" and "The Electric Playground", and a host of other media covering the day's activities.

Every year, www.WalkOfGame.com accepts votes in the categories of Game/Character and Lifetime Achievement. The top four Games/Characters and the top two lifetime achievers are inducted into Walk Of Game and have a 24"x 24", customized star installed on the floors of Metreon, a 350,000 square-foot entertainment center in downtown San Francisco. 2006 nominations will be announced in late 2005.

As a Bay Area destination for the international gaming community, this year Walk of Game is officially partnered with the Game Developers Conference (GDC), which is coming to San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center, March 7-11. The conference is expected to attract over 10,000 attendees and Metreon will be host to several GDC meetings and demo areas. The GDC will feature more than 300 lectures, panels, tutorials and roundtable discussions across seven content tracks. For a complete list of GDC 2005 event information visit www.gdconf.com.

Wow Nintendo is well represented in this. I agree with more of the inductees but Halo. I agree its a great game I don't think it of that calibur and age to be awarded such an honor.

I agree.  Halo has only been around for 3 or 4 years as opposed to the 10+ years of the other game franchises.  Now where's Samus??

Maybe I should drive down there and accidentally spill a chili dog on Halo's star.

Nintendo getting three out of the first six stars is really good - though not to sound fanboyish, but being the longest-lasting game hardware developer (and of course, software), it should come as no surprise.

I think the exclusion of Samus is because of her eight-year hiatus between Super and Prime (excluding both Super Smash Bros. and really tiny cameos like in Kirby's Dream Land 3, that is).  If she had more games, some spread out into that time period, she'd definitely have a star.  (Though with recent games, she's quickly catching up to Link in terms of the number of games.)

Though even with a hiatus and whatever reasons one might come up to explain the absence of a star, it STILL deserves to be there more than Halo, a new franchise that only recently got a second game.

Is this a yearly thing?  If more stars are revealed each year, Samus would probably get one soon.  And unfortunately, probably games like Grand Theft Auto as well...

Did anyone see the pic of Miyamoto, it makes him look at little deranged. The group of plushies make him look like he is wearing it like a head necklace.

Heh... wasn't Tomb Raider a fan favorite also?  I wonder how the popularity of Halo would fare 5 years from now.

Halo is the game that made Xbox what it is. Without Halo this would be a 2 console race. It certainly deserves a spot and is FAR more popular than Tomb Raider ever was. I'm glad Mario is there though

Halo?  A bunch of crap if you ask me.  Mario, Link, and Sonic have all had crappy cartoon shows.  Halo?  No shows at all.  Kirby?  Yes.  I demand a star for Kirby.  I also demand a crappy cartoon show for Samus.  Captain N doesn't count.

Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

The best part about this, is it's at my work!!! Yup I work in the Metreon, actually at the arcade in the Metreon called Portal One, I'm the tech for the games, hence the name PortalOneTech.

Shiggy's star is right in front of my door!!! And Link's is right next to his! This is going to be a very cool event. So stop by my arcade and say hi if you're going to be here! I'll be the white guy with the red afro running around trying to make sure all the games are 100%.
Hell the guy that invented Pong will be here, and he's friends with the owner of my arcade! Gotta make sure everything looks good. Maybe I'll shine up my Donkey Kong for Shiggy!

See ya,
   Dustin

(a quick Google would've told you that the Pong inventor is Ralph Baer, though they might send you Nolan Bushnell who packaged it and sold it. That bastard is currently heading Atari and making them churn out sequels and rehashes)

Ah, a Nolan Bushnell bash.  I'm glad to know that someone else feels the same way about the supposed "father of videogames" that I do.

Actually Ralph Baer is considered the “Father of Home Video Games”. While Nolan Bushnell is the  â€śFather of Arcade Video Games”. And yes Pong was invented by Bushnell. If you don't believe me, here's a letter from Baer all about it.
