in a strange twist, when i went to see daredevil tonight (movie blows) i saw an extended version of the "180 games, what a rush" commercial.. not only that i noticed in the theatre lobby a contest booth sponsored by gamecube for a ski trip...

i have to say i didn't think the short tv commercial was very cool at all.. but for some reason this extended version seemed cooler... gameplay footage could have been better... but overall i thought it was a nice step in the right direction and it's good to see nintendo spending some money to make sure their commercial appears before a much hyped movie like daredevil... hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Also, when I walked into my local EB Games to pick up my Zelda presale disk, it was PACKED with advertisements about this disk. I counted 5 advertisments. That's more than all the other advertisments put together.

Bah, with commercials like Nintendo has been putting out lately, the PS2 userbase is NOTHING

Seriously though, I have been much more interested in their advertising as of late, and since at age 17, I am a genius, this should spell good for the GCN.   They seem to be trying to seem much more serious lately than before.  They went from that SSBM commercial with suits(I liked it btw) to the commercial with the dude in the hospital, bit of a change.

IMO, the BEST game commecial ever was the first ssb.  I mean, who thinks a bunch of guys including mario, link, and kirby walking along to, we'll always be friends, then having one trip another and then them all fighting each other ISNT the best?

I still like the old Yoshi's Island commercial for the SNES. Nintendo has been competing its just that they are trying different things, that don't seem to be working. I hate to say this but they should keep it up with the movie promos and drop the playboy ads. They should concentrate on the traditional advertising techniques.

Nintendo needs to atack worlwide, or maybe more in latinamerica, Here in Chile the only commercial that we can see is on cartoon network after dexter's lab, that really sucks, well, we don't have any PS2 or Xbox commercials, but Nintendo should take advantage with this and bomb us with good commercials, and make the promotions they do in USA, because I don't know if someone here purchase a GameCube he will get a free game, and probably here no one is doing that, and here in chile we don't have the promotion of OOT/MQ with the pre order of Zelda, a lot of fans will pre order this game if they have the promotion here(including me) but if we doit on amazon or in gamedepot it's too expensive for us, something like $110 bucks including shipping

That ad was awesome! Not to be a jerk, but it wasn’t Link and Kirby. They were Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Pikachu. Wait a minute… why do I remember that?

Thats true, but things in my opinion r beginning to pick up i mean today i went to EB and in front of the store there was the free game deal with like five gamecubes and the free games beside them.  This generated heaps of attention I myself witnessed three sales with SMS twice and star fox once.  I mean it was there at the front of the store.  I havent seen this kind of miracle since the release of the gamecube back in march.

I like most of nintendo's ads. Remember those early commercials for the GBA? I liked that one in the church and that one for golden sun where the chandelier turned into a dragon. and those "going platinum" commercials were a riot. I also remember downloading a european commercial for a gba where a guy and a girl seemed to be having sex in a darkened room, but it turns out they were playing with gba's. and there was also a print ad of some dude playing a gba while at a urinal.. lot of great ads, some less than stellar ones...

but, for some reason, i don't think advertising is the reason that nintendo's behind sony and microsoft (at least, not the main reason). Sony had a big head start. Microsoft has been selling their system for $199 AND giving out two games with it. Plus both systems have some great titles and can also play dvds, all for $199. I myself, a long time nintendo loyalist, considered buying an xbox when I heard about the price drop (I didn't have a standalone dvd player at the time). And I think the xbox can also function as an mp3 jukebox. And I even considered the PS2 because of Shinobi, and all those $20 greatest hits games.

I think when the big N launches their next system (I hate talking about "the next system") at roughly the same time as the other companies, they will win back 1st place because their hardware is great, and their software even better. I don't care much about hardware, but Nintendo's hardware is built with games and effects in mind. They don't just slap the most powerful crap they can find in there and rush it to market. Look at the N64 and GC. Built in anti-aliasing (that works), Z-buffering and other junk.. Multi-layer single pass whatever, lighting algorithims/whatever at close range--not at infinity, water/heat distortion effects... etc. etc.

With aggressive and innovative marketing techniques like Cube clubs and various events where people make fools of themselves to win Nintendo products, Nintendo's can absolutely win back the market whenever the next gen of consoles comes out.

Btw, Microsoft's advertising sucks. It's just plain boring, and/or stupid. Well, the stuff that I've seen and can remember.

to follow up on my original post, i went back to that same theatre today to watch old school (funny flick!) and noticed that there were two gamecube demo units for people to play right by the entrance... on one machine was ea's nba game.. on the other machine there was a demo disc with metroid and zelda and a bunch of movies.. i had a go with zelda.. man that game is going to be sweet... anyway the theatre has tv screens all over the place which they run movie previews and commercials.. the "180 games what a rush" commercial was played on these tvs as well as the metroid prime commercial... sitting down for the movie, i once again saw the extended "180 games what a rush" commercial... so nintendo seems to finally be turning up the heat... my question is, what took them so long? where was this effort months ago?

i think nintendo would be wise to keep their gamecube presence in the theatre well into the summer when all the summer blockbuster films will  draw some large crowds to the theatres... what would be even smarter is to arrange to have the matrix game on one of these demo units for when the movie hits the theatres.... are you listening nintendo?

HOW TO MAKE GAMECUBE DOMINANT (A RETURN TO NES-style MARKETING)                       Just click here

Reading this article makes you wonder if Nintendo is the same company. They did what it took to make the NES dominant in the late 80's..... they should be following the same tactics now.
.
.
.
.
.
GREY NINJA WROTE:
"I think that the guy is WAAAAY off base on his information. There is an element of truth to it, but it's told from a warped perspective."

Nintendo was ordered by the U.S. Courts to refund $25,000,000 to consumers.  That's not warped.  That's a FACT.
Nintendo used many similar tactics in the late 80's, as Microsoft uses today.
Nintendo became dominant because of those tactics.

Therefore if Nintendo wants GameCube to be dominant, they need to repeat/follow exactly the same tactics they used for the NES. Microsoft *is* using those tactics and now they are #2.  As the saying goes, "Nice guys finish last."
