Topic: DS in Australia

Heyy guys the DS launches in Australia in 3 days. they already have playable DS's in most EB stores. I was playing one the other day, and i just havea few questions.

1. is there a slot on the DS to slide the stylus in?
2. howcome in metroid hunters u cant jump, charge beam, or switch beams?
3.can you hold the DS mid air likea  gameboy while playing games that use teh touch screen, or do u need to rest it on ur lap?

1. Yes, at the top, next to the DS cartridge slot.
2. I haven't played much of Metroid, so I can't answer this question very well.  But I know you can jump, I've done that before.
3. The DS is lighter than you'd think, I hold it while playing the minigames in SM64DS all the time.  I guess that's up to your preference though.

The controls in Metroid depend on the scheme you've chosen, but  in (what I think is the) default, you can double-tap the screen to jump.  You can't charge or switch beams because it's only a demo.  You can switch to missles once you find them by tapping the missle symbol on the bottom right hand side of the touch screen.

Well only 3 days to go... i really really hope the DS is a blast down here, nintendo need to do well over here in Australia, seeing Gamecube was a flop here

There's no regular charge beam shot.
Collecting 2 Missiles or 2 Electro Lobs (E. Lob is multiplayer only) allows you to charge said weapon.
If you're playing Control S, jumping is done by double tapping the screen.
Switching weapons is done by tapping either of the icons on the bottom right portion of the screen.
Morph ball is performed by tapping the graphic on the lower left hand corner of the screen.
Playing multiplayer is EXTREME ownage and you WILL like it.

Id love to, but after the first few days of uni I've relised that it would only be a distraction and i never would have time to play it =( so bring on the HOLYDAYS!! (holidays).

So unless the big N starts up some sort of Nintendo school in melbourne chances are ill be burying myself away in the wonderful world of X.500 and LDAP with no DS =( oh the excitement!

Got it pre-ordered with Super Mario 64 DS, can't wait. Also, this seems to be getting more advertising than the GC has gotten over it's lifetime here, and it's not even out yet! NAL are pushing the DS hard it seems...

The Nintendo DS is quite literally a magazine whore atm.

Even the ps2 and xbox are getting shafted by it, with little to no magazine exposure.

Lets hope Nintendo keeps it this way for the months to come.

I also love EB's close to false advertisement for the DS...

BUY A DS FOR $40 in huge print and then right at the bottom in the smallest print on the posters is

after you have traded in your car, house and wife...

hey with paying $200 do u get metroid demo and mario 64 ? or is the $200 just for the DS and metroid demo?

Just the DS and the Metroid demo. Super Mario 64 DS is $70 and sold separately.

Yea australia always seems to get shafted on the price of technology but if you want to put it in perspective with the psp it looks like the psp will retail somewhere between $300-$500 and around $90 a game, compared to the $200 ds and $58 a game @ K-mart its not too bad.

Even though the psp looks like an awesome little gadget, there is no way in hell ill pay $90 for a portable game and I know quite alot of people with the same sort of mentality (mind you most are uni students and are already on tight budgets).

To be fair, paying $58 for a first party DS game ain't too bad.  I remember holding $62 in my hot little hand as I gave it to the Big W cashier in exchange for my very own copy of the newly-released Super Mario Land 2.  My god, I loved that game.  I played it to death.

I think you're mostly right. Here in New Zealand, most GBA games release at around $90AUD. After talking to a few retailers, I gathered that GBAs are bought almost exclusively by parents for their children.

The problem is that Sony's marketing is better than Nintendo's, and in countries where the XBox outsells the PS2, I think that's more important than anything else. "The PSP isn't a videogame console like the GameBoy range is, those things are for kids! It's a media-player lifestyle unit." I believe that's the sort of crap we should be expecting.

Not being pedantic here but i think you mean $90New Zealand Dollars and not AUD cause GBA games retail in Australia around the $60AUD mark give or take.  

Even with sonys marketing I still wont pay $90AUD for a portable game whether or not other people do is entirely up to them.

Ok guys its official. The DS has been released in Australia!!!!!  

its about 7 am right now, im about to go to school, afterwards im going into the shops to check out eb games and the rest of the shops that are selling it. Im hoping there are big crowds and lines lol. anyway cyas

In both major game stores around my area all employees were wearing DS shirts, there are actual advertisements, and DS cases are clogging entrances causing fire hazards. Also, games are only 70NZD; which I think may be cheaper than Australia. Monaco have done a really good job this time.

Nope, I mean 90AUD, or around 100NZD. Though lately I've been seeing more retail for a bit cheaper, that's certainly what it was a few months ago.
