Tales DS announcment this Friday?!?
« on: February 16, 2005, 05:21:35 AM »
This may be me starting a rumor, and if it proves to be false feel free to erase this thread, but this Friday Namco is announcing its next Tales game.  I haven't been able to find any info about for what system it is.  I can think of only two possibilities.  Either this is to 'officially' announce the PSP game that was already announced, or its just gotta be a DS game cause every other system has a Tales game.  Here's to hoping.

Edit: Alright, edited title for sake of what its really about.  Hopefully the mods will move it to other systems.

dammit...that really does suck...  I don't care if its on the PS2, there is just no reason to not release it on both PS2 and Gamecube.

Sure there is.  In Japan, Symphonia sold as many copies on the PS2 in one week as it sold on the GameCube up until that point.  How long a lead did the GameCube version have--at least six months, right?

Maybe so, but I guarantee you the cost of porting would still be made up based on the sales that the GCN version of ToS did have.

On the bright side, TOS wasn't ported to the PS2 stateside.

I've heard that there were a couple of additions, enchancements to the PS2 version. Without spoiling it too much one of them made Zelos and Kratos pure equals, some new group techs, etc.

I guess ToS was just a fling for Nintendo owners.  It did pretty decent in US if I'm not mistaken (It cracked the top 10 according to NPD's July or August 2004 data..), why not make another one?

I believe Tales of Eternia has been announced for the PSP, though I could be mistaken.

On the bright side, Baten Kaitos gets a second chance on the DS....

"TOS wasn't ported to the PS2 stateside."

Yet, it takes them a good while to translate anything anyhow--wouldn't be surprised to see it arrive on the shelves mid July again (one year after the launch of the GC version--just like in Japan).

Kinda looking forward to the port stateside though--already beaten the GC version but it would be nice to see all the animated cutscences now.

Translation shouldn't take that long at all considering there's already the GC English version.

I've read that one of the Tales games did horrible on the PSOne.  Does anybody know what the title of that game is?

You know the Tales games are graphically not that advanced so what's the problem of having it on PS2 instead? It'll sell better and more people will buy and enjoy it.

Oh but I forgot, the only people that deserve it are the Nintendo fanboys, about 5% of which actually bought Tales of Symphonia

Anyway there's always the possibility of a GCN version being announced, especially since ToS did fairly well.

Namco released "Tales of Destiny" and "Tales of Destiny 2" (it's real name was Tales of Eternia) on the PSone in America.

As of January 2003:
Tales of Destiny - 68,614
Tales of Destiny 2 - 56,864

As of Dec 31:
Tales of Symphonia - 285,000 (on the GameCube in America)
Tales of Symphonia - 184,000 (on the GameCube in Europe)

Tales of Symphonia - 395,000 (on the PS2 in Japan)

As of last October:
Tales of Symphonia - 332,000 (on the GameCube in Japan)

The port of Tales of Eternia (aka: Tales of Destiny 2) on the PSP is supposedly going to be released in America again. Namco sucks.

If Namco really sucked, Skies of Arcadia and Paper Mario would be the only great RPGs on GameCube.   I totally agree that Namco is being top of braindead and should release this game on both systems: ruby_onix's numbers show exactly why...but I also think we should be grateful that Namco took a chance on the Cube in the first place.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I believe Nintendo owns the rights to the translated text and voice-acting.  If Namco wanted to release a PS2 version in America/Europe, they would have to retranslate everything, and re-record all new voiceovers.

Really?  thats an interesting business move i didn't know went on in the idustry if its true.  Nintendo didn't have anything to do with publishing or localizing the game did they?  Very interesting...

I believe Nintendo published the game in America (maybe Europe, too).  My understanding is that Namco wasn't going to release the game outside of Japan.  Nintendo wanted to, so they paid for everything that needed to get done in order to make it happen.

So that's why there are no immediate plans to release outside of Japan for the PS2 version of ToS?

Nintendo didn't publish ToS in the states (namco did).

Two, it always take forever for developers to port/translate games (SoA for example--there was an English DC version but it still took sega 4+ months).

Guess Nacmo's not really pushing it to the states just yet because it already has an TBRPG out (xenosaga II).  Usually developers tend to seperate their own games a couple of months, kinda dumb competing against oneself :0.

Still I wouldn't drop the support for the GC just yet (porting over the game is cheaper than creating a new one)--in Japan it's still number 2 (by a large margin) and that's where Namco generates most of it's sales for it's RPGs anyhow.

By the way, Tales of Legendia = Project Melfes

Project Melfes was supposed to be Namco's big title for the PSP. They were supposed to be hyping it by giving away a free UMD with Tales of Rebirth (on the PS2), which would contain a demo for it, but then Namco apparently just ended up putting some Project Melfes images on Rebirth's PS2 DVD.

So now it seems that Project Melfes for the PSP was completely canned, and moved over to being a PS2 title.
