Turning the DS into a PDA seems pretty un-Nintendo like.  Not that I don't want them to do it.  Afterall it sounds like an option which I like since some people want just a game machine and some want more and this could allow both choices.  I just don't think it's likely because of Nintendo's past attitude about being "games only."

Well see this allows it to be an add-on feature like the play-yan, if you want these we'll let you use them, but the DS unit itself remains a games system, unlike the PSP which rams the stuff down your throat.

I dont understand this attitude. If Sony includes extra features, why is that a bad thing. You don't have to use them if you don't want to. If you dont want to listen to music, dont. If you dont want to watch movies, dont. It seems alot of people want these extras, I know I do. I think Nintendo is run by fools that won't listen to the gaming public, they keep trying to be DIFFERENT and its killing them. N64 cartridges instead of cd's, the design of the cube screams k iddy, whereas the PS2 looks like it belongs with the rest of my audio/video equipment. You know what they say, image is everything. I have every Nintendo console ever made, yes even Virtual Boy, and I will probably buy the next one, but alot of gamers won't give it a chance if Nintendo doesn't make some real changes.

I think his complaints are pointed towards the fact that a gamer *has* to pay for those features even if he doesn't want them, since they are included in the system (and thus the cost of those parts are included in the price)...

Ok I don't, why should I have to buy a system with those features if I don't intend on using them?  Nintendo letting me pick and choose is far more acceptable IMO.

This better be true, because if it is I will DANCE.   I mentioned in the V-Pocket thread that I wanted a PDA feature for my DS (even though I wasn't refering to the V-Pocket - d'oh!).  And yes, they better include a translationator in this >=o

And I'm almost positive that there will be a web-browser for the DS.  It would seem silly for them not to include it in this, but I'm confident saying that someday you will be able to browse the web from your DS.  If it's not official, someone will make one for it.

Soon after E3 2004, I remember reading about PDA software in development for the DS. Initially that was this that got me interested in the system and the promise of Advance Wars DS sold me. I pre-ordered as soon as the Advance Wars announcement was made.

I don't necessarily know that I'd buy a PDA program for the DS, but I think it's a good idea.  I'm just not an organized sort of person, though it would be kickass to pull it out and have people say hey what's that and I'd be all like DS what and they'd be awesome and buy a million of it.

Well Ian, Nintendo's broken a lot of their own rules as of late...all of a sudden, "Hey Square, you can take us online, baby" and "PLAY YAN OR DIE."

Woah.  Apparently I'm the only one getting this reaction, but...well, we already knew there was a PDA app coming, Organizer Plus (SummitSoft) (<---it's in that list), but Palm OS...am I the only one thinking BIG BIG BIG when I hear that?

And Pale, yes, it damn better include a web browser.

Well Pictochat is pretty un-Nintendo like. And the fact that the DS actually includes features like Wi-Fi, and promised voice chat for online games, and new technology and stuff. The whole DS thing really surprised me. I was expecting some worthless piece of antiquated crap. Since Nintendo has been promising online play since the DS was unveiled, and has included all these features to make it as much a communication device as a game device, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo releases things like a web browser or PDA functionality.

But I don't think it has anything to do with V-Pocket. It's pretty obvious that's just the real name for Play-yan, which wasn't exactly a catchy name. And how many things start with "V" anyway? Video... Virtual... I doubt Nintendo ever wants to associate with the world Virtual anymore, and since Video fits in perfectly with the Play-yan...

I mean what does V have to do with PDA functionality? And why sould something like a PDA need the word Pocket in the title? Aren't all PDA's pocket sized? However fitting a movie player in your pocket is a great advertising angle...

Thats a lot of overs.  Anyway, I personally think it would do nintendo a world of good if they combined the play-yan with the pda functionality.  I'm assuming I will eventually move to almost only playing DS games on the system so it would be nice to have one expansion game pak that stayed in the system almost all the time, rather than switching between multiple ones.  But then i guess the play yan is supposed to work with SPs too, so thats right out.

The Play-Yan seems oriented towards the SP. It only works at GBA res, it has a headphone out. DS compatibility seems mostly incidental to Nintendo, as you can see in their limited advertising. I guess this would be OS 5. Does anyone know licensing costs for Palm? This expansion would have to be under the 100 dollar mark, after 150 on the hardware it would need to be cheap to compete with dedicated PDAs. At 50 I would probably get it.

Well Nintendo could be making a DS version of Play-yan that actually competes more directly with PSP, and takes advantage of DS features..

I think I might have figured out what the V-pocket really is, and it's totally different than what everybody has been talking about. The V-pocket logo wasn't the only patent Nintendo filed around that time...

It may be something about their particular design.  Details are important, that's how loopholes are found and how Sony can copy stuff.
